Eyes... Glowing... Covered in darkness... Where am I...?
Evangeline opened her eyes drowsily, before she jerked awake with a gasp. She tossed her head from side to side, taking in her surroundings. The room she was in looked like a hospital-meets-asylum, the walls and door padded to prevent injury. She winced as she noticed the bandages around her head and the dull throbbing pulsing through her skull.
She glanced around the room again, seeing a variety of objects on a nearby table. Shakily, she slid off the hospital bed, her bare feet feeling the cool floor. Approaching the table, she grabbed a pair of socks and began to pull them on as she looked over the objects on the table. They all seemed pretty ordinary; a wallet, a camera, a pair of gloves... She paused to turn on the camera, frowning when she found that no pictures were on it. Eventually her eyes settled on the keychain resting on the counter. She picked it up instinctively, holding it up. It was beautiful; a crystal heart, perfectly refracting the golden light coming from the window and casting it across the room in a brilliant display of colour. Minutes went by as she just stood there and stared, captivated by the marvellous crystal. She tried to remember what it was, where- or who- it was from, but she came up with nothing. But she felt something as she admired it- it was hers. And it was important. She couldn’t have explained it, but she knew. It was meant for her.
After what felt like an eternity, she snapped back to the present. Letting out a sigh, Evangeline tucked the keychain in the pocket of her red sweater and looked around again. Where was she? She didn’t recognize anything about the place, let alone how she got there. Hesitantly, she reached for the door handle, feeling a wave of relief as it clicked open, confirming she wasn’t locked in. Pulling the door open, she peered out into the hallway.
“...Hello? Is... anyone here?” She called out, her question being answered by the still silence that followed. It was quiet... too quiet for a hospital. No sounds of footsteps, no chattering. Taking a breath, Evangeline stepped into the hallway, turning right and walking until she reached what looked like a reception area, with two large doors presumably leading outside. She glanced out the window as she was about to open the doors, stopping when she realized it was raining.
Almost on instinct she grabbed the yellow rain jacket that hung from a hanger, fitting it around her torso. It fit almost perfectly, too her surprise. Tossing her hair over her shoulder, she opened the door and stepped outside, taking a breath of fresh air while the rain ran down her protective jacket.
[Taking a break from this while I write something else and work out the rest of the timeline. It's not abandoned, I promise.]
In the year 2050, a new virus emerged and spread through a remote city in the US. The virus, classified as Inzomnia, made anyone who became infected unable to sleep, sensitive to sunlight, and hungry for the spinal fluid of humans. They are fast, agile, and eerily intelligent, especially during the early stages of infection.
Many perished or became infected by 2053, although one group of survivors took refuge in the old Sanatorium.
Life is fairly routine for a while until a few of the survivors come upon an enigmatic girl lying unconscious after a storm. She seems to have no idea where- or when- she is. She seeks to remember how she got in the city as she avoids Inzomniacs who seem to have a particular interest in her over everyone else.
Author’s note: Some episodes are labelled as “mature” because of violence/blood. It's more of a precaution- the scenes are very short and not the most graphic- but I'm paranoid.
This is a "first pass" story with minimal editing. Leave your tips/criticisms in the comments.
