Alex Young

Prologue

Prologue

Aug 18, 2021

Where am I? What is happening?

It was dark, I couldn't see my own hand in front of my face. Am I flying? And suddenly the lights turned on. There were four other teenagers in the same room. There was something about that completely enclosed space that didn't allow them to sleep, move, talk to each other, or feel hungry.

We wore the same white clothes in a room of the same color. Surprised and startled in the slightly tilted chairs, the sunken eyes sought some help between them.

Who are you? Look at me.

The girl between them was crying without a sound. I could swear that she would suffocate at any moment. Then the teenagers tried to check the room by looking around, but there were no doors or windows. It was impossible to enter or leave this place.

Why am I the only one who can move here?

They were facing each other perfectly distributed in that room where each could see the other. One of the boys tried to communicate with his eyes, but without success. The other two didn't understand at all. Then it happened: a wheel formed in the middle of the wall behind the crying girl and stretched to the edges of the ceiling and floor.

A Nirvana song started to play: Come As You Are. I remember this song. My grandfather said it was one of my parents' favorites. From the entrance that had just opened, a bald man with tattoos all over his body emerged, dancing awkwardly to the beat of the music. Furious and misunderstanding looks from those boys stared at that guy. He had a different look than usual. There was something about this guy that said he wasn't human. Maybe it was the completely yellow eyes or the pointy ears. The truth is that those teenagers got into a big mess.’

“A thousand apologies, young primates.” he hummed in time to Come As You Are. “I had some problems to solve.”

Suddenly they can produce sounds. The girl's crying was hurting my ears. The young man who was trying to communicate, spoke screaming then: “Who are you?”

The almost human creature put a finger to its mouth.

“Don't ask questions. I'll explain what's going on soon.”

“Please, I have a little brother.” another young man pleaded, frightened. “He doesn't have anyone else in this life.”

“By Aries, young cubs!” he replied in the rhythm of the music.

“Why the hell do you talk in time to the music?” the third young man, who seemed to study music, knew the band he played.

“Why, I thought humans expressed themselves through music.”

“We don't express ourselves through music. I mean, we can, but we don't communicate like that.”

“Oh!” He sighed with one hand on his chin. “That's why I looked crazy when I tried to communicate with the earthlings.”

“So are you an alien?” I got no answer.

The girl's crying must have irritated that creature. Suddenly it ceased all or ambient sound again. He got in a position where everyone could see him and said a pointless sentence.

“You are the ones chosen to protect the guardians of this era. Behave yourselves.”

A few moments later, I was transported to another place I knew very well.

I found myself on the porch of my house and looking to the horizon, the world as we knew it was about to end. It was two o'clock a.m. and many suns were visible in the sky.

Is it the Apocalypse?

Flames of fire split the sky and the last layer of our atmosphere was about to break. The particles in the exosphere were detached from the gravity of planet Earth and the temperature gradually increased. What unbearable heat! This layer of the atmosphere is basically made up of half helium gas and half hydrogen. It is responsible for protecting us against celestial bodies.

My paternal grandfather had been at NASA, and thanks to the stories he told me, I learned a lot about the universe. I read several books, official documents and saw documentaries - not revealed to the public - of skies covered with stars and how meteors will destroy the planet someday.

I am getting crazy. This couldn't be real.

I blinked twice, rubbed my eyes. When checking the front yard of the house, I saw my grandparents hugging each other and, on the horizon, the first meteor hit the ground. The ground shook with the explosion. A cloud of dust hit us next. I was trying somehow to try to find my grandparents in all that chaos.

Can they see me? Yes, they can.

“Alex, let's go to the basement. Get down immediately!”

I nodded, and as I descended I saw through the window yet another streak of fire clearing the skies. The impact was of such incredible force that it destroyed our home.

What a pain! I'm not feeling my legs.

The pain I felt upon retrieving one was excruciating. Am I dying? My senses were leaving me and giving way to an intense calm. The pain faded as my life faded away.

Why did God let the world end like this?

The house had collapsed on top of the three of us. When the dust settled, I finally understood what had happened. A beam fell and crushed my right side. I knew I was dying. The people say we watch our life passing through our eyes at these times. But what did I see? Another damn meteor falling.

So, is this how it all ends?
