The sirens went off.
You sighed.
It was the hundredth time that week, and it was only Monday.
You were tired of the constant sirens, you just wanted to do your groceries without hearing them go off.
You finished up quickly, knowing the town would be assembled soon, and you were correct.
"I've called you hear to say..." The mayor said, his voice fading away as you thought about what to make for dinner. The town had been doing these daily at that point, you knew the speech by heart. "Come up and pick a card now," the Mayor said, finally finished.
A blue card. Not the best, but you could live with it.
"Green cards, you are free to go, red and blue stay please," the Mayor called out once everyone had drawn a card. "Red cards, step into the next room, blue cards I think we all know the drill by now," he added.
You nodded with the people left, only a handful of you had drawn a blue today.
In unison, you reached for your pockets and grabbed the knife.
Your left foot could live without it's pinky toe, you decided.
The pain was a constant at that point, you'd learnt to live with it, so you quickly cauterised your wound and went to drop off your toe.
"The monsters will eat well tonight. I hope it satisfies them another day or two," you thought, wandering out of city hall.
Either way, it didn't matter much. You wanted to try and make dinner before it got dark.
