Luka looked at the mirror in the employee bathroom. She was there standing behind him. Her eyes, a piercing blue. They looked into his grey ones. Luka turned around but saw nothing. Looking back into the mirror, he saw her again. It was Blaine. Her body, covered in blood. The gash on her neck oozing blood as her deathly pale figured loomed behind him. He splashed some water on his face, hoping that would get rid of the woman behind him. He looked back in the mirror, praying that he'd just see the bathroom wall. Thankfully, there were no dead women standing behind him in the bathroom this time. Luka sighed and headed back to work. He needed to have a break from all the customers so he took on the job of shelver. He took the trolley full of groceries that needed to be shelved and began walking down the aisles. Heading to the empty ones first.
Luka pushed the trolley filled with varieties of alcohol down the alcoholic beverages aisle. It was early in the day, no-one would be down there yet.
Luka thought back to the bathroom incident. He shivered in disgust as he remembered the gash in the dead woman's neck. The thick red liquid that oozed out of it. The pale skin tone she now had. Luka gagged at the image in his head. Then put his hands up onto one of the higher shelves so that he could take a breather. As Luka steadied his breath, not ready to have another breakdown, a voice called out from behind him.
"Excuse me.... Um....d-do you know where the pasta is?" Behind him was an old lady. If Luka had been in a good head space he would have helped the old woman and taken her to the pasta but the figure behind the woman stopped him. Behind the woman was Blaine. Her face distorted into a look of anger and disgust. Luka could see that the old lady was trying to get his attention again but he kept hearing the sound that Blaine's flesh made as it connected with the knife and the sound she made when she was thrown into a garbage bag by one of Georgie's employees. Luka shuddered and walked backwards into a shelf of alcohol. A few bottles fell off the shelf and shattered on the floor. Blood red wine spilled everyone, reminding Luka of the puddle of blood that surrounded Blaine as she died. Luka's knees shook and he lost balance, falling into the puddled wine and shattered glass. The old lady had fled during the chaos. Luka now had a full view of the figure of his deceased ex. He noticed the knife in her hand this time. She hadn't had it the last few times he'd seen her. This was new. Luka gulped and attempted to speak. Nothing. His voice wouldn't work. Luka watched as the dead figure walked towards him slowly. His mind raced. His breathing became laboured and his limbs shook. Luka tried to reach his hand out to stop the incoming attack but his hand just fell limp beside him. Luka's vision started to get blurry. He didn't know when he had begun crying but the tears began streaming down his face. His throat constricted and he quickly moved back, hitting his head on the metal shelf behind him. The already blurry world blurred further and started to spin. Luka's head hit the ground and his spinning, blurry world faded into darkness as he lost consciousness.
Luka awoke in the staff break room. He anxiously sat up and looked around. His head began hurting so he laid his head back down. He luckily hadn't seen any dead women looming in corners but he had also failed to notice his upset coworker seated on the couch opposite him.
"What's up?"
Luka turned so that the left of his face was swallowed up by the semi comfortable seat pillows of the couch. His head started pounding since he had turned too fast. Luka closed his eyes hoping to alleviate the pain in his skull. He needed to focus so he could hear what Peter had to say.
After his headache had subsided Luka reopened his eyes and looked at Peter. His co-worker was sitting on the opposite couch with a mug in his hands. Luka racked his fuzzy brain for what he had said before the headache had hit.
"What's up?" Peter asked again. Luka was grateful for the caring side of his co-worker. He was sure that in a few moments he'd regret saying that but for now he was grateful. Luka went to open his mouth but his head began throbbing again.
"Sorry." Peter said, "I'll wait for the headaches to pass."
Luka watched as Peter stood up and put his mug on the break room counter. Peter then went to one of the cupboards nearby and grabbed out a glass.
"Can you try sitting up?" Peter asked while he was filling the glass with water, "I don't want you to choke while drinking."
Luka attempted to sit up. His head began pounding but he managed to get through it and semi sat up. Peter had also brought him over a pillow that he used to hold himself up. Luka took the glass of water from Peter and began drinking slowly.
"You should probably take the next for days off."
Luka stopped drinking and looked towards Peter.
"You hit your head and scared one of the customers away."
Luka went back to his water and became unusually interested in its appearance.
"You've also been unconscious for the past two hours, so your shift is already over."
Luka was embarrassed. He had already forced his co-worker to work overtime this week and was forcing him to do it again. All because he couldn't get a grip over himself and kept falling back into the dark depths of his mind. Luka went to say something to Peter.
"NO!" Luka wasn't used to his quiet co-worker yelling so he immediately shut his mouth.
"The paramedics were here," Peter looked uncomfortable. "They said you'd be fine. There was no internal or external bleeding. They said you'd just need some rest as you most likely passed out from stress." Peter then made eye contact with Luka."Now. Tell me what's up."
