Yukion once again sat in front of his laptop, this time though he had Ray sleeping against his shoulder. Over the last few days, Yukion had learnt that, like Daigo, Ray was a very touchy feely, hands on person. Yukion had counted an additional 29 hugs and 56 praises and 3 rests on his shoulder. He couldn't determine whether he found these activities enjoyable or uncomfortable, as his heart remained abnormally unsettled throughout every encounter. Yukion closed Luka's document, he'd been staring at the screen for over an hour without making any attempt to edit it. He glanced beside him, making sure that Ray was asleep before opening up the document he had on him. Yukion quickly noted at the bottom of the page,
'Sleep: physical contact required'
Yukion had used all his encounters with Ray to test a theory he had. Ray would only fall asleep if he had some form of physical contact. So far Yukion's theory had been confirmed, although it didn't seem to matter what kind of physical contact was made. Ray seemed to wake up not long after physical contact was disconnected, as Yukion had learnt when his bathroom break had also turned into a food break.
Yukion absent-mindedly browsed the document.
"Mornin'"
Yukion jumped and slammed his laptop shut at the sound of Ray's voice.
"Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you." Ray said as he stretched out his arms. He then snuggled back into Yukion's shoulder and promptly fell back to sleep.
Yukion and Ray woke up to the sound of the apartment's front door opening loudly. In walked Daigo with a bag of groceries.
"Did ya guy's have a nice date?"
Yukion looked at Daigo in shock.
"W-wasn't." He quickly stated avoiding any eye contact with Ray.
"Mornin' Daigo" Yukion flinched slightly at Ray's voice.
Yukion sat on the floor in the middle of his room. The light was off and his door had a chair in front of it to keep it shut. After Ray had left, Daigo had teased Yukion relentlessly about the closeness he had with Ray. That had been bearable. He could handle Daigo's teasing. It was the thoughts that appeared due to the teasing. 'Did that count as a date? What about the party incident? Were he and Ray dating? How did Ray feel about him? Weren't they just friends? Were they even friends?' these thoughts had haunted Yukion all day. Yuri had placed a plate of food at his door for dinner. The plate had been taken away sometime after. Yukion had slightly lost track of time in his brooding. The slight glow of the sun that leaked in through a gap in the curtain was the only thing that informed him of a general time. It was morning. He had spent the entire night in his thoughts.
Yukion sat across from Yuri at the breakfast table. Daigo sat beside her, shovelling the cereal into his mouth at a fast pace. He avoided any eye contact with either of them, choosing instead to stare at the bowl of plain cereal sat before him, untouched. The awkward silence kept him frozen, anxiously waiting for it to be broken by either of the two seated opposite him.
"How'd your date go?" Yuri asked, breaking the silence.
"Wasn't." Yukion blurted out, jumping out of his seat, waving his hands around. Both Yuri and Daigo looked at him in surprise at the sudden outburst. Yukion froze for a few seconds, staring at the surprised expressions on their faces, before sitting back down embarrassed.
"W-we're just friends" Yukion stated, quietly. He then fled, not wanting to continue the conversation. Yuri and Daigo just looked at each other before shrugging and continuing their meals. After growing up with Yukion, they'd grown used to his sudden flights from conversations.
Yukion was once again sitting in his dark room and once again he was seated on the floor. His phone lit up his face as it lay at his feet. Ray's contact was on the screen, Yukion's finger was frozen millimetres away from the call button. He watched as the screen light eventually shut off and an image of an empty battery was displayed. Yukion retrieved his outstretched hand and brought it back into the warmth of his blanket hideout. Now he had nothing to distract himself from the thoughts that plagued his mind. The one thing they had in common was that they all revolved around Ray.
"Hey Yuki, you wanna play some games?" Daigo's voice came from the other side of the door. Yukion stood up with his blanket still wrapped around his body. He opened up the door and bathed in light was Daigo holding the game controllers and a packet of chips.
"Yeah" Yukion stepped out into the bright light with Daigo and nodded.
The boy's played video games and ate snacks throughout the night. Yuri joined them at some point with some breakfast. It had been simple bowls of cereal but both boys enjoyed it.
The cafe had been fairly silent. It usually was on a Thursday afternoon. It allowed Yukion to contemplate his thoughts while attending to the few customers.
"Hey Yukion, you okay?" Saria's voice broke Yukion from his thoughts. They were in the backroom getting ready to leave. Yukion nodded and continued to pack his apron and bow tie away.
"You seem to be lost in your thoughts." Saria continued as she leant against her locker waiting for him to finish. Yukion glanced at her before returning to the task at hand.
"You're still able to come right?" Akira, the Café owner, asked as she stepped out of the storage room, a small cardboard box in her hands.
"Yeah." Yukion replied, nodding while shoving his backpack on. Akira had invited all the staff out for a celebratory meal to welcome Yukion to the team.
"Good. 'Cause I woulda dragged ya there regardless." Akira's giggles faded as she left the room. The other two following not far behind her.
