Iridescent Moon

Luna's story

Luna's story

Mar 08, 2022

There was a legend about the forest, Satamay (sah-ta-may).  The legend says that when the sun is asleep and the moon is dim. The creatures of the night will be hunting the forest waiting for some unlucky person to wander into Satamay and get lost. So that the creatures could eat the memories of the lost and turn them crazy. As a warning to all of the villagers there was a stone tablet telling them that they would be forced to live in a nightmare.

Luna, a child born on a solar eclipse, was a special child born with pale moonlight hair and purple eyes that glow in the dark.  She has just turned sixteen which means it's time for her to learn the ways of her people. So she will be forced to be out in the wild for two days in isolation from the rest of the village while she hunts, cooks, and finds shelter from the harsh wild of Satamay.  But before she leaves her family, they are going to celebrate her sixteen years of life.

“Oh Luna dear, wake up it’s almost time for your celebration.” Rin, Luna's mother was saying as she was gently shaking her.

“Aw but why must I go? It's not like anybody cares.” Luna asked her mother.

“Well it's for your going away to Satamay so this may be the last day we will ever see you.”

“Fine, I'll get ready but why must I go to Satamay for two days.”

“Well dear that's because it's tradition when you turn sixteen you have a challenge to overcome. Which is surviving with very little things and trying to keep yourself safe from the monsters”

A few hours later at the party. “There's more people than I thought, more than half the village is here.”

“Well Luna that's because we're happy to see you go,” Rick exclaimed “I mean you are just a freak so of course the village shows up to say goodbye for hopefully the last time.”

“Why are you always so mean to me? I haven't even done anything that bad.”

Near the end of the party we all gathered in front of Satamay. They all took turns saying good-bye to me after the last person said good-bye, I turned towards the forest.

After I entered Satamay I could hear all of the animals that I didn't hear outside Satamay.

Night 1:

I knew it was a dark night but I could see everything so clearly and I could hear even the faintest of sounds.  I wonder if this has something to do with how I felt earlier, I felt like I had to break free and run wild. I heard the sound of branches snapping as though they were being stepped on. So I ran until I was out of breath. I was near a giant yew tree when I heard the steps of something, I had just enough time to climb the yew. Before a weird-looking creature came into the clearing it had its head facing the sky as though it was trying to sniff out fear and the unwelcome intruder. Please mother yew protect me from the will of those who wish ill.

I cannot protect you from that which resonates within you my dear moon child. But I will protect you for the night as you rest within my branches.

What do you mean by moon child, Mother Yew?

Do you know what was happening on the night you were born?

No Mother Yew I do not know what happened and what does it have to do with me?

Well my dear child you were born during a lunar eclipse. When you were born the moon gave you many gifts such as the eyesight and hair. But you must find your other gift before it's too late.

But where do I find it Mother Yew?

You must find it within yourself, my child. Sleep well within the safety of my branches.  With that the voice disappeared and I found myself asleep.

Day 1:

I woke up to the wind biting at me like a hungry animal and fell out of the tree. While I was rubbing the sore spot on my back the crows were laughing at me.  “Stop laughing at me you darn birds.” just as I said that the yew tree hit me with a branch. “Okay no need to hit me Mother Yew. I'm sorry that I yelled at you” I told the birds sarcastically and got smacked again. I went through that a couple more times until I made a real apology.

I left the clearing to find things to use for the rest of my time in satamay. I was walking looking for a place that I could use as a shelter. As I was looking I came upon a small stream the water was so blue you could see the bottom it felt good to. I would have just stayed at the stream but I had to find shelter before night time came and the monsters came out. After a few hours of walking around I found a small cave. I picked up some fire wood and decided I would find food the next day. I found a long stick and a sharp rock. I took it back to my cave. It will be night soon, I must get  some leaves and make a bed. After an hour I had a bed made up and several sharp sticks in case a creature showed up so I could defend myself.

Night 2:

I heard the crunch of leaves telling me that something was coming. I got a sudden sense of danger, so I grabbed my pointed stick. The creature came and I fought as hard as I could, I injured the creature and it screamed. Then all of a sudden there were three more coming at me.  I wish I could tear them apart like a wolf. There was a flash and then I wasn't holding onto a stick. I looked down at my hand-paws‽ my hands turned into the paws of a white wolf. I looked around towards the creatures, I started walking towards them as they backed away in fear. I heard a growling sound only to realize it was me. I attacked the creatures as they tried to run away. Mother Yew thinks I found my other gifts. After I killed them I ran towards the stream I found earlier. When I got to the stream and looked into the water and saw a white wolf with glowing purple eyes, I couldn't believe it. If the village freak turned into a wolf, I wonder if I could turn into anything else. Maybe a squirrel? There's that flash again. I looked back into the stream and I saw a white  squirrel with glowing purple eyes  staring back at me. I tried a few other animals  and they all had the same white hair with glowing purple eyes.  Wow so that's the gift I have from the moon. I changed back to a wolf and ran back to the cave. When I got to the cave I fell asleep on the pile of leaves

Day 2:

I woke up after a nice rest. I couldn't remember what I did that night very well. I walked out of the cave on all fours, I saw the dead bodies of the creatures turn to dust. I looked down at my paws; they were all bloody, so I ran down to the stream and looked at myself in my beautiful wolf form all bloodied from the creatures. I rolled around in the stream cleansing myself of the blood, I felt hungry so I got out of the water and followed the stream till it came to a small pond with some fish in it. I spotted my prey and jumped in and caught the fish on the third try. I took it out of the pond and ate it raw. After I ate my fish I ran to Mother Yew.  Mother Yew, Mother Yew I found my gift.

So it would seem my dear child. How did you find it?

I was attacked by some creatures and I became a wolf. They were all afraid of me.

I knew you could do it my child and just in time for you to go back to your village unless you would like to stay with me?

I'm sorry, but I think I should go back to my village but if I'm allowed to, I would love to come back and visit you Mother Yew.

Of course my child comes back anytime you want and tells me about your life. But right now you should probably go back after you change.

Yes that would be a good idea Mother Yew bye.

Back at the village

When I got back home they were so excited and asked me a lot of questions. But I stopped them and said that I felt tired. They said it was okay because they were also tired when they got back from their test in Satamay. So I went to my room and fell asleep thinking about my new way of living.

I no longer feel sad when I think of being made fun of for my hair and eyes because they could never understand the world through my eyes.
