I couldn’t stand it! I was so tired! The one time I got there was just because of someone else getting chosen.
Then they said, “Where’s the attendant you brought?”
“I-” I didn’t even think about that. I was so angry I just wanted to hit something.
“Let’s go get her, this place isn’t too safe” They acted like they knew what was going on. Then they said, “I found her!”
Great, but something was wrong with her.
The woman was whispering, “Nonononononononononononononono~” She was petrified.
“I’m not supposed to be here, I’m not supposed to be here, I’m not supposed to be here, I’m in trouble, oh I’m in trouble.” She was shaking.
“Hey, calm down. I was the one who dragged you here, if anyone’s in trouble it would be me.” I thought saying that would calm her.
She started yelling, “NO! You don’t understand how this works do you idiot?!” Of course I didn’t.
I said, “Not exactl-”
“Third-level attendants aren’t supposed to get chosen with passengers! Only second-levels!” Whatever she just said confused me more. Third, what?
“There are levels?!”
“Are you really this clueless? How did you even get here?” I was getting sick of her already.
But still, she started explaining, “Levels, the Level 1 attendant is the scary one that tells me what to do.”
“So I’m guessing the level three is you?”
“Yes! And now I know I’m gonna be in trouble!”
But I just noticed something…She’s like, small. Not short, but small.
So I asked, “Hey, how old are you?” Because It’s like she’s a- Wait, she was a kid! Working here?! “What’s your name?!”
“Shut up! We don’t have time for any of that! I’m gonna be in so much trouble and we’re here of all places!”
The other passenger wasn’t talking, I turned around just to see them frozen, just like the little girl.
They said, “I-I had no idea they roped kids into all of this.” For the first time, they sounded scared and confused.
Then they asked me, “You, what’s your name?!” I’m not telling this stranger that! I still thought I’d ask the same though. “How about you?”
“Just call me Ollie. Whoever you are, we need to get this kid somewhere safe. I know you don’t know this but this island gets dangerous after the Sun comes up.”
“Dangerous like how?!”
“Let’s just go.”
This Ollie person was kinda pissing me off, not telling me anything.
“But the girl is still scared!” I said.
“Then drag her, or carry her! We just need to go!”
“No! I’ll try talking to her.” I had to come up with some way to calm this girl down.
“Hey kid, we gotta go or it won’t be safe.”
“N-no, I can’t go anywhere!” What was that Level 1 lady going to do?! This girl was so scared.
“Listen. Maybe we can...braid grass. Do you know how to braid grass?”
“No?”
“I’ll show you, but it’s too sandy here. Let’s go somewhere else, with grass.” I hadn’t noticed before, but this ‘Ollie’ girl-guy-whatever! They were dressed so strangely, gloves, and a hood that looked like it could cover their entire face, it wasn’t on so I couldn’t tell. It’s like they didn’t want their skin to show at all.
“Okay.” Good, we can go now. But this kid is so scared, something’s off.
Then Ollie said, “Let’s go.”
I asked, “Why though? Why do we need to rush?”
“Great, you must be clueless, I bet you’re in phase 2 or 3. I just want you two to hurry up before the Sun comes up, you should know what happens you’re an attendant.” They pointed at the girl.
She said, “I’m just a level three, the only thing I do is keep passengers in line on the plane. I’ve never even been here.”
Still, why the hell is a little girl working here? I just realized I’ve only called her kid.
So I asked her, “Hey, are you ever gonna tell us your name?” She stopped walking.
“My name. I guess I don’t remember.” What? What did they do to this kid?
“What do you mean you don’t remember?”
“I MEAN I DON’T KNOW! OKAY?”
“Okay, okay. We’ll just...give you one!”
Then Ollie just said, “Sarah”
“What?” I was confused.
They just came up with that,
“Don’t ask any questions, just Sarah.”
Sarah said she liked it. It felt like we walked for hours, maybe we did, our phones didn’t work on the island. All I knew is that it was December 26, and it was dark outside.
Then Ollie told us,
“We’re here”
I was sick of them not telling us anything!
I asked, “How do you know all this stuff? No info ever gets out about the island.”
“There are groups if you know where to look.”
“But I don’t!”
“Well look harder. I don’t really care about your problems, let’s find a place here for Sarah to sleep so she’ll be safe.”
