The king was unable to focus on his meetings that day. After lunch, he ordered Miles to cancel the remainder of the day.
“My King?!” Miles squeaked in surprise as the King stood abruptly and was already leaving the room. “But there's a meeting with--”
“If you cannot do the least of cancelling these meetings, then I'll simply need to hire a new assistant.” the king stated as he got the door. “I will meet with them tomorrow.”
“O-Of course, my King.” Miles slumped his shoulders as he started to scribble down the notes. “Might I inquire as to where you're planning to go?”
“Simple. I need to continue the conversation with my alpha.” He stated, and left the room.
From the open door, he could hear Miles call after him, “You don't even know if he's home from work yet! My King!”
It didn't take long for the king to change clothes into something presentable, but plain so he wouldn't stand out, and for his knights to also change. Then the little retinue went out of the palace and across town to the apartment.
He spent a few minutes knocking on the door in that similar manner – just continuing to hit his knuckles against the wood without any pattern.
The sound prompted Mrs. Kowalski to come out of her office and over to him.
“H-Hello, my King,” she stated in a soft greeting to him.
With a confused look, he looked at her. “Is he not home?”
Carefully she straightened her back. “He... might be.”
“You don't know?”
“My King,” Mrs. Kowalski spoke to him like he was a toddler, “I cannot confirm that information.”
“Why not?”
“It's an invasion of privacy, and I'm afraid, my King, you've given me no legal reason to tell you.”
He crossed his arms. “But I am the King.” He sighed. “Can you unlock the door for me?”
“Only if you sign a contract.”
“Pertaining to?”
“That you will not disturb, destroy, or pilfer anything within, including but not limited to persons of the introvert nature.” She said crossing her arms.
There was a silence as the two stared at each other in silence.
“It's on a form I have for the police when they do investigations.” She explained. Then she toddled off, and returned a moment later from her office with three pieces of paper and some pens. “This states what I just said. That you, the trespasser, will not disturb, destroy, or pilfer anything within the confines of the apartment, including but not limited to persons, people, or things, or pets.” She handed him one copy of the paper. “If you agree, I'll need your name at the top of each page – which are all just copies – and signature at the bottom. Then I sign the bottom as witness one, and then one of these people,” she pointed to the knights, “will need to sign as witness two.”
The king took the paper and started to skim over it's language. It was very simple, but exact. Then a clause caught his attention. “If entry be done without being accompanied by the two witnesses, then the signing party of the trespasser will be subject to a 50,000 fine as a start for damages, with a follow up prosecution by a judge who'll read the case of the occupying tenant versus the trespasser.” He looked up to her, Mrs. Kowalski beaming with pride at her paper. “So he could sue me even if I do nothing?”
“If you enter without being chaperoned, yes.”
The king looked down his nose at her for a few seconds. “This is very thoroughly thought out document.”
She thinned her eyes up at him. “I take the safety of my customers, my tenants, very seriously, my King.”
His face relaxed and he smiled. “I appreciate the thought.” And he held out his hand for a pen. “I accept these terms.”
After the three papers were signed by the king at the top, with an accompanying signature at the bottom, Mrs. Kowalski signed them at the bottom, and then the knight. Then she handed one to the king, folded one into her pocket, and folded the third into an envelope.
“This'll be the tenant's copy.” She explained.
Then she opened the door to the apartment.
