Gunfire echoed in the streets. The echo broke as a thud sound followed. A body fell.
Edenia looked in fear as she saw her comrade, Vlad, fall down with a bullet hole right at the centre of his helmet. She crawled herself deeper into the rubble to hide.
The man walked to Destoria as he injected her with an adrenaline shot. Her breathing intensified as she was charged with energy. She looked at the man, recognising his coat and his revolver.
“Kal?” she asked.
The man pulled his hood out as he looked at Destoria.
“Haven't seen you in so fucking long. How are you?”
Kal helped her up to her feet, wrapping a band-aid around her leg wound.
“Your arm…Monarch?”
Kal would stand up, taking a look to where his right arm would be.
“Only one person can fuck me up this badly…”
“Yeah well. He did you a favour so you can stop wanking.” She chuckled.
Kal walked to Cee-G with a frown on his face. He would pull out the knife on its neck before trying to kickstart a self repair. He then turned to Destoria.
“I saved your life and you thank me like that?”
Before Destoria could reply with a smug face, the android would sit upright.
“Systems recalibrating. Power transferred to system repairs.” The orange eyes would shift to green.
“Des! I'm preparing the ship for extraction at your location.” Ajay spoke with urgency and panic through the android. However, the presence of Kal would catch him by surprise.
“Afternoon, you neek. How’s business?”
“Kal? How did you…wow…”
Kal would take a look at his missing right arm before turning back.
“Barely made my way into town after I lost it. It wasn't swarming with these dogs when I arrived. Thought I would die because of the blood loss but…” He would take a seat on a boulder. “A bunch of freaks took me in and treated me with one of your uh…regenerator bullshit.”
“Anatomy regenerator.” Destoria interrupted him.
“Yeah. It healed the wound within a few days. Apparently they were Ava’s people. Vigilante Corps? Something along that line. When I wanted to make my way to contact you lot, the town was infested with troops and tanks. I didn't make my move until two blokes started taking down troops and tried pinning down those two Iacon wankers but failed. I won't tell you the details, it’ll frighten ya.” He pointed at both Destoria and Cee-G while finishing his sentence.
“Wait, you said tanks. We never saw any vehicle stroll down these streets when we were scouting it.” Destoria frowned as she said that.
In an instant, tanks would drive down the street. It was heavily armoured. It was equipped with a heavy cannon alongside a long-ranged machine gun and micro-grenade launchers. They were dubbed Iron Hounds. Fast and agile with only 4 wheels yet packing a brutal punch. As the machine guns started firing, Kal pulled Destoria into cover while Cee-G began scanning for possible ways of exit. However, they were unable to go far. Not only are the Iron Hounds able to catch up to them, they must stand ground for Ajay to retrieve them. The odds were against them. Cee-G is equipped with lethal projectiles that could blow up a Hound but it was not enough to take on an entire convoy. Destoria and Kal’s weapons are from medium to long range. It ultimately renders both of them useless in this fight. Only time will tell their luck of survival amidst this ambush.
~~
Hours passed as the scorching daylight faded into the darkness of night. The crescent twin moons shined down on the town as multiple breach squads were formed. Edenia, who was taking cover previously, had stabilised her wound and had taken command of this scenario. Multiple squads were sent to breach the suspected area of hiding but they were unable to breach. They were killed instantly by Kal, Cee-G and Destoria. They hid in a room covered in rubble. The only way they can make it out is with a coordinated plan. Ever since they hid in the rubble, they had already devised a plan. Ajay’s ship, though meant solely for transportation, had a few defence mechanisms such as explosive turrets and barrage missiles. The ship has its shield matrix that completely covers every inch of the ship. However, it could be rendered useless in a matter of minutes if repeatedly bombarded by ionised tank shells. Taking this into consideration, Ajay would play distraction. Lights would be directed at the rubble from the headlights of the tanks. Edenia stood with support from a crutch as she kept mobilising breach units to snuff them out. However, she would then hear the hum of an engine echo through the midnight air. As the barrels of tanks turned alongside Edenia, they would be bombarded with turret fire. Ajay’s ship swept in, firing shots from his turrets while carpet bombing the Hounds. Though it did little damage to the opponent, he was playing distraction. While the tank fired into the air, Destoria and Kal would sweep the floor with the troopers that were outside the tank. They timed their cover when Ajay’s ship made rounds to carpet bomb the ground. Swiftly, the drivers inside the tank would be killed and Cee-G would enter, planting an explosive to detonate when they cleared. Edenia would begin to retreat without commanding the garrison. She was injured. She felt that ensuring her safety was far more important than aiding her troops. She knew that they would lose. Slowly, she limped out to the dune sea where she was absorbed into the darkness. Gone from the action.
“Sorry about your hand.” Destoria spoke to him in a soft voice as she took a seat facing him. Kal grunted in shock due to his reflex but he managed to grab hold of himself upon not getting used to her new face.
“Your face. How did it-
“Monarch. Same as your arm.”
Kal nodded as he cringed at the fact that they were losing.
“He can take my arm or your face. He can't take our spirits. We will fuck him up hard.” He would cross his legs.
Destoria chuckled upon hearing him say that.
“What?” Kal frowned.
“Nothing. I thought you were the sarcastic type.” She would smile.
“Also, Ajay thought that you were a bit of an arrogant bastard going balls in on the mission like that.” Destoria commented.
“Of course he did.”
The doors behind them opened. Ajay walked in with a long briefcase.
“Guess I was right innit mate?” He would mock him with a terrible Australian accent.
“Say something like that again and the barrel of my revolver will find a new home up your half-washed bumhole, ya cunt.”
“Well, you need two arms to do that.” He would slam a briefcase on the table in front of him. He opened it and inside, it would be a metallic prosthetic. It was engineered to respond with his nerves under 1 picosecond. “I took some inspiration from the Tariol operator we encountered earlier. With this, best believe you will never miss anything.”
Kal picked up the prosthetic with his good arm. His face was reflected from the chrome shine of the forearm. He would then chuckle.
“So continues the tale of the legendary gunslinger.”
End.
