Luka moved the curtains slightly and peeked through the gap. Outside the house opposite his was a white van. Each week the number of people in the van changed. This week Georgie had sent only two of his subordinates. Luka watched as two men lazed about in fold out lawn chairs in front of the van.
"Whatcha doin'" Mika pushed herself in front of Luka and gazed out the window intent on discovering whatever it was that was distracting her father.
"U-uh n-nothing!" Luka's voice peaked as he abruptly shut the curtains.
He swiftly picked his daughter up and marched towards her room. Luka set her down amongst her toys, in hopes of distracting her. Luckily for him, Mika was more than happy to focus her attention on the adventures of her stuffed animals.
Luka sat idly on his couch. Some action movie was playing silently on the television in front of him, though he paid it no mind. He had put Mika to bed before starting the movie, now he was moments from sleep himself.
Luka awoke to a sharp pain in his head. He made an attempt to cradle his head but was stopped by the pull of a rough rope, which bound his hands behind his body. Luka began looking around in surprise. What had happened to him. Only a moment ago he had fallen asleep on his couch. Now he found himself on the cold stone floor of a dark room, all alone. A quick shuffle allowed him to bring his hands to the front, not that it made untying the rope easier.
Luka had gotten most of the knot untied before aggressive yelling from the other side of the door stopped him in his tracks.
"Why would you do that?!?"
"Was better than what you did!"
"Boss aint gonna like it though."
"Well, he ain't gonna like waiting either."
The voices hushed and Luka resumed untying the rope, only to be interrupted once again. This time it was the door opening and a bright light infiltrating the room. In the doorway stood two men. Luka froze.
"Well. Looks like someone was tryna leave early." One of the men said. Luka recognised it as the first voice that had spoken before. The man strode over to Luka and grabbed his chin. The man smiled the ugliest smile and cruellest eyes that Luka had ever seen.
"Boss won't be 'appy bout that." The other man stated, before striding into the room, he was tall enough. The first man dropped Luka's face and stepped away, a disgusted look on his face. The second man grabbed Luka by the scruff of his neck and threw him over his shoulder.
Luka attempted to make noises of resistance but fear trapped the words in his throat.
"Aren't ya such a good boy, ay," The first man stated, "Stayin' nice and still."
The larger man, holding Luka, grunted in affirmation.
The two men placed Luka down in a different room. This one was modeled after a luxury office. The floor was carpeted and a large wooden desk sat as the centre point of the room. Sat on the chair behind the desk was Georgie.
"What's with the rope?" Georgie questioned his underlings, a disappointed frown evident on his face as he glanced between the two men. The two men shuffled nervously, avoiding any eye contact Georgie attempted to make. Georgie turned towards Luka and smiled eerily.
"Wait."
He then turned back towards the men and dragged them back through the doors. Luka was left alone, tied up in Georgie's office. 'What a strange man.' Luka thought.
"Strange indeed." Luka froze in his place. It had been so long since this had last happened. Almost a week. Luka slowly turned around.
There sat cross-legged on the desk sat Blaine. She smiled eerily, similar to the way Georgie had smiled at him.
"It's been a while dear."
Blaine moved off the desk and came towards him. Luka began breathing rapidly. The rope restraints around his wrists felt tighter. The air around him seemed to freeze and his body tensed up. While this was happening Blaine kept slowly walking towards him. Then Luka's vision started to fade to black.
"Daddy?" Luka awoke to find himself back in the lounge room of his own house. He turned to look at his daughter. She was staring up at him with her sippy cup in her hands.
"Drink pease." Mika said, handing the cup to her father.
Luka took the cup and Mika ran off to her room.
He looks back towards the house across the street. Two men came out carrying tools and pieces of cloth. The men on the lawn chairs got up and accompanied the two back towards the van.
Luka drew the curtains closed. He had suspected his neighbours of spying on him. He was getting paranoid.
Luka took a deep breath and stood up off the couch. He reached up on his tiptoes to stretch his aching limbs. Luka filled Mika's cup up with some orange juice before filling up another cup with water. He chugged his water and grabbed some snacks to add to Mika's game. Luka put some cut veggies and a pottle of yoghurt on a plate before walking to Mika's bedroom.
Mika was having a tea party with her toys when Luka walked in with her sippy cup. He sat down on the floor and joined in on Mika's game.
Luka lay alone on the living room couch. Whenever he had tried to sleep in his bed, he had had horrific nightmares so had opted to sleep in the living room. So far the room had been void of nightmares and provided him with a full night's rest. He hoped the same would happen tonight and he wouldn't wake till the morning. Luka tucked the blanket up to his chin and tried to get comfortable on the slightly too small couch. He took one final peek out the window to look across the street one last time that night.
Nothing. The house was dark. The only light being the streetlight. Everyone had gone to sleep.
'I should probably do the same.' Luka thought before reclosing the curtain and re-tucking himself in.
