Chapter 2
I’m going to the cafe to get out of the house, that’s where my, I guess, older stepbrother works, however, he says to just refer to him as a friend, he wants nothing to do with his dad or new mom. His name is Kinkay. Sound familiar? I feel bad for him, he’s different, like me, the only difference is he got his crush.
I walk into the cafe and Kinkay waves at me with a goofy grin and helps a customer before walking up to me. “Hey, Yua,” he says and goes back to the counter, I follow.
“Are you on break yet?” I ask
“In a few minutes, want anything?”
“The usual” I come here often, his manager loves me, maybe cause I pay even though I don’t have to since Kinkay is family even though he doesn’t want to be.
“Coming right up!” he smiles and starts making my boba with some cookies to go with it.
He gets on break and we sit at our normal table. He gets sad to sit at the table in front of us so we sit at the table in the corner even though the table in front of us gets perfect sunlight and it’s a booth, but I respect Kinkay so this is where we agreed to sit.
“I’m getting old,” he sighs and stretches. I laugh a bit.
“Your only 28 though,”
“Yeah, I’m getting old,” he laughs a bit and takes a sip of his coffee.
“Tell me one of your stories from high school,” I love hearing his stories even though most of them are sad.
“Ok, where should I begin-” when he starts talking, a pair of twins walk in a male and female both of them with their hair dyed blue. Kinkay quickly stands up and hugs them. He says something to them and they come to sit with us at the table.
“Yua, these are my friends from high school, Eli, and Elly,” the twins smile and wave at me, I wave back. Kinkay looks at the twins.
“Guys, this is Yua, my dad adopted her,” the twins smile, and Eli holds out his hand for me to shake.
“Sup Yua, it’s nice to meet you, so are you in high school?” he has a calm smile.
“Yes I am, I’ll be turning 17 soon,” the twins look at each other then back at me with a smirk.
“Got a special someone yet,” they say at the same time and Kinkay looks away a bit and then back at us with a calm smile. He lost someone very special to him when he was in high school, he tries his best to stay happy, he’s never told me the person’s name or what happened, all I know is that the person was his boyfriend.
“Not yet, but I have a crush on this one girl,” the twins exchange smiles at my reply and then look at Kinkay.
“You got a sister like you,” Eli says laughing a bit.
“Are you referring to me as a girl?!,” all of us start laughing including Kinkay.
“I’m offended,” he says laughing a bit and takes another drink of his coffee.
“Anyways,” he sighs laughing a bit.
“Where are you two’s girlfriends?” He looks at the twins.
“Shopping,” Eli says.
“They said that we can’t go since it’s a surprise cause our birthday is coming up,” Elly says with a smile.
“They’ll be here later,” Eli says, taking a sip of Kinkay’s coffee. He doesn’t seem to care, he just takes out his phone and looks at the time, Eli looks at Kinkay’s checkered phone case then sneakers and belt.
“You haven’t changed a bit, you’re still obsessed with the checker pattern,” Eli says with a small laugh.
“You're one to talk, you both are obsessed with clouds,” Kinkay says with a smile and points at both of the twin’s hoodies, phone cases, and tattoos on their knuckle.
“And your the one who thought clouds were made of cotton candy,”
“Hey, it’s not my fault they look like cotton candy,” Kinkay laughs. When I look at the cloud tattoo I notice that all three of them have the same tattoo on the bottom of their wrists, It’s a semicolon except instead of the dot it’s a star.
“What’s that tattoo for?” I say and point at the one on Kinkay’s. Eli looks at us and Kinkay just looks down at his.
“I guess it’s time I tell you the story,” Kinkay says and pulls a picture out of his pocket, It's a picture of a boy with hazelnut brown hair with a star and moon hair clip, his eyes are a bright yellow and he’s smiling, he’s holding up a peace sign...his wrist is covered in scars, behind him is a waterfall. I look up at Kinkay when I finish looking at the picture.
“That’s the boyfriend I mentioned who passed away, his name was Yooki, he was around your age when he couldn’t take it anymore and jumped off the top of that waterfall in January,” he grabs the picture and looks at it, his eyes start to fill with tears and Eli and Elly hug him as he starts crying and cursing himself out under his breath.
“Remember it’s not your fault, and he told you not to cry over him,” Eli says and Kinkay nods and touches his moon necklace. He smiles at us and stands up.
“I should wash my face and get back to work,” he sighs and walks off to the back. I look at the picture on the table again and Eli hands me his phone.
“Just scroll it’s all pictures and videos of Kinkay and Yooki,” he smiles a bit and I scroll through. I play one of the videos. I see Yooki and Kinkay walk onto the bus they’re holding hands the camera turns to face Elly and then to point at the seat behind them where Yooki and Kinkay are now sitting, Kinkay covers the camera with his hand, ‘turn that thing off,’ he says and I hear a laugh. His hand moves and I notice the laugh is coming from Yooki.
When I finish going through the videos and pictures I can’t help but smile a bit, I can see why this group loved Yooki so much especially Kinkay. I feel bad for them but they continue smiling because that’s what Yooki wanted from them.
I watch two girls walk in and Eli and Elly smile, The girls have the same tattoo on their wrists they must have been close to Yooki too. One girl has short hair dyed purple and pink, the other girl has long hair dyed bright pink. The girl with short hair sits next to Eli and the girl with long hair sits next to Elly.
Kinkay walks over with 4 coffees and sets them on the table. “Yua, the girl with the short hair is Ming, Eli’s girlfriend, and the girl with the long hair is Blossom, Elly’s girlfriend, girls this is Yua,” The two smile and shake my hand.
