The man sat in the other chair.
Nin looked like she was sweating, and I noticed her calm expression. She wasn't feeling relaxed at all.
Let me take the time to point out that Nin takes after Mom in every aspect. Her tall and slender build, beautiful facial features, and ability to stay calm in all situations, like now.
"Nin, why don't you introduce us to the young man here?" Mom was the one to thin the ice.
I wanted to know, too.
Nin spoke calmly, "Ma, Pa, I would like to introduce you to my fiance, Tawin Ruangrit."
The man nods before speaking, "please call me Grit."
Mom had an excited expression, but Dad looked shocked.
Am I the only one feeling numb from the news?
My older sister was getting married, it was tragic!
"Our daughter is getting married!? When? Is there already a date set?" Mom was all over the place.
"I refuse!" We all turned to the new voice.
My older brother had returned from college.
He is Kla Lertpong, and we call him Tut. I'm not sure why.
Tut is good-looking, tall, and athletic. I'm starting to wonder if there are any of my siblings who take after Dad.
I guess Tut has Dad's stern expression and, like Dad, he's sweet on the inside.
Tut is also four years older than me and two years younger than Nin.
"Tut? Stay out of it!" Nin was glaring at him.
Tut points at P'Grit, "I suggest you forget about marrying Nin because you're not worthy!"
"Oh, hush you!" Mom swats her hand in Tut's direction.
I pout, but no one is paying attention to me.
Sister brings over a fiance, and he gets all the attention. I don't like him already!
I don't know when it started, but I could feel something wet on my cheeks.
Tears. The quivering of my lips and the taste of something salty.
These are tears that I couldn't stop from flowing.
It was Tut who noticed it first.
Tut panicked, "Blue! Look at what you did. Now Blue is crying!"
Nin reached and pulled me into her embrace.
She smoothed the back of my head gently as if to calm me.
"Don't cry, Blue everything is alright," Nin repeats.
I glanced over her shoulder at that man and couldn't help but ball harder.
Nin speaks softly into my hair, "are you afraid? Don't worry, Blue. Even if I got married, this sister of yours would never forget about you."
I sniffle and rub my nose onto her shirt.
It serves her right.
Nin leans me back and cleans away my tears with her thumbs.
"When were you planning on telling us about this?" Dad looks angry.
Nin turns her attention to Dad, "I wanted to settle in before telling you."
P'Grit looked nervous, "It's my fault, I told her..."
Dad cuts him off, "It doesn't concern you. My answer is no, and you might as well leave, boy."
It's the first time for me to see Dad this upset about something.
"Pa!" Nin stood up with clenched fists.
I feel as though my crying has escalated the tension somehow.
I felt my chest tighten. I didn't want my family to fight anymore.
"The two of you should calm down. Hun, let's talk about this later because Blue is getting upset." Mom walks over and tries to calm Dad down.
The attention was on me again. But the tension in the room has not cooled.
I think it would be better if that man left.
Nin had a scary expression on her face, but I think I should fix this.
"It's alright if Nin stays here with her fiance." I was lying since there was no way I was okay with it.
They were all looking at me with surprised expressions.
I clutched my teddy tightly and gave a fake smile that did not match my true feelings.
"Are you sure, Blue?" Mom was looking at me with concern.
No. No. No!
It was the voice in my head that I could not bring myself to voice out loud.
Even though I knew that it would go my way, I would rather die than lose my place in my sister's heart.
Tut looked agitated. I could tell that he wanted to refuse as much as I did.
Mom shook her head at him until he sighed.
Dad and Tut looked defeated with his slouching shoulders, "fine."
Nin burst into her smile, "thanks, Dad!"
Nin excitedly hugs dad before she happily hugs her fiance.
I'm relieved that Nin is happy, but I still don't like that P'Grit guy.
