Let's explain some things about the blue face paint.
This is an important thing for boys, it's a sort of "coming of age" sign.
When you get it, you gain the right to go outside the Ophek cities and towns. But for that you must prove your self sufficiency and your capacities in basic survival skills.
They paint this dark blue mask-like shape in order to protect their -poorly adapted- blue eyes from the dazzling sunlight. Females normally aren't interested in going out to the desert, they'll get awful sunburns and tons of sand between their clothes. So it Is really, really rare to find some girl using this facepaint.
