Once Andrew and I had gotten back to the office he went straight to his desk and started going through the box he brought back with him a few days ago. I closed the office door behind me and made my way over to my own desk.
"Is there anything on the 'One-Hit Striker' in there?" I asked, sitting down in my seat.
"There should be. There's just so much in here. It's hard to find," he grumbled out, sounding annoyed.
I guess if there's multiple files on different cases in the one box I can see why he'd be frustrated.
He seems like a very organized person.
So, having to go through a box with different files to different cases is probably annoying.
But they probably do that, so that they don't take up more room than they already do with more boxes.
It seems like a huge hassle to go through all those files in just one box.
"Aha! Here they are!"
I immediately grabbed the files from Andrew; being careful not to tear them. He glared at me, but says nothing; knowing I was just curious on the case. I shuffled through the files, making sure to look over everything.
I didn't want to miss anything important.
One page among all of the files caught my eye.
It listed all of the victims in the 'One-Hit Striker' case along with the possible suspects:-
'Kara Bailey - Age 17 - June 6th 1992 - Deceased
Damien Smith - Age 16 - June 30th 1992 - Deceased
William Manva - Age 22 - June 17th 1994 - Attacked/Alive
Eliza Torren - Age 19 - June 20th 1996 - Deceased
Possible fifth victim?'
I put a hand to my chin as a thoughtful expression crossed my face. The murders started out in the same month of the same year, before suddenly stopping and continued two years every year after before finally stopping.
Why is that?
My eyes narrowed at the third name mentioned.
"Hey ... was the attacked witness ever questioned?" I brought up to Andrew, causing his eyebrows to draw together.
"Now that I think about it..." A frown crossed his face as if he was thinking hard on it. "No. He wasn't. Not thoroughly anyway."
I turned my attention to my colleague with a own frown plastered on my face. "Why?"
If he was let go that's just incompetent.
He was attacked by a serial killer.
They should've at least tried to get information from him.
I get he was injured, but still....
His information would've helped the case and it would've saved the next victims...
A sigh finally left my superior and I realized why. "He had gotten a concussion from the hit to the head. He couldn't remember anything. We told him if he did to call us."
And they never received a call back...
"It's been too long now, but do you think he'd have recovered enough to be able to answer us?" I asked Andrew.
The man folded his arms; a long sigh escaping his lips as he looked towards the ceiling. "I don't know. It's possible. But he may also not be able to remember anything from that time."
It was possible as sometimes concussion victims never truly recovered.
If he's still suffering from such an injury all these years later we shouldn't hassle the poor guy.
I nod my head at him as I turn my attention back to the files in my hands.
So, we had a possible witness on the culprit.
That's a start.
Only problem is they suffered an injury that's interfered with their memory of the event and who knows if they can even recall it sixteen years later.
My eyes skimmed the page down to where the suspects were located and frowned.
It was a small list.
"Why is the suspect list so small?"
Andrew let out another sigh. "We only got one thing from the witness and it was that his attacker was female."
I froze.
Female?
A woman killed three .... possibly four people?
I looked down at the file page I was on once more. That's probably why the third victim survived. The others were younger; in their teens. The third victim was my age, so he probably had the height and strength able to continue to move against his would-be-killer.
But I don't understand.
What was her motive?
Why kill?
My eyes roamed the suspect list, wanting to find any type of lead.
'Women in the vicinity when William Manva was attacked:-
Patty Sheridon - Age 28 - "I was at a club with some friends. Had too much to drink, so I'm hungover right now. I can't remember jack after I drank my fifth glass of wine!"
Annie Shriver - Age 23 - "I was just finished grocery shopping and heading home. My son is home with his Father and both are waiting for my return."
Maureen Vurnes - Age 56 - "What! You're accusing me of trying to kill someone! Don't make me call my lawyer!"'
It doesn't really state how close these women were to the attack site.
None of these women said how close they were when the victim was attacked.
That or the report didn't file that in for some reason...
I stared at the file; a frown creasing my features as I tried to figure out if these three really were just innocent women going about their day or one of them is a killer in disguise.
A knock sounded at the door causing both of us to turn our heads. An officer stood at the door with a notebook in his hand and a frown on his face. "I was told to bring you this since you two are working on the 'One-Hit Striker' case."
He walked into the room, handed the notebook over to Andrew before bidding us goodbye.
Andrew quickly skimmed through the little booklet he was given, flipping through the pages and narrowing his eyes.
His eyes widened a fraction before standing up, grabbing his jacket off the back of the chair and rushing out the door. "We're leaving."
"W...What?" I exclaimed, confused at his sudden change in behavior. I turned my attention to the notebook he left on his desk.
It has fallen shut when he put it down.
I opened it and skimmed the pages for anything that might have set him off.
Finally I came across a page titled 'Witness Statements' and one caught my eye immediately.
'Liam Shriver - Age 17 - "I was on my way home from school. Sorry. I didn't see anything. I just was just curious of the commotion."'
I dropped the notebook as my gaze returned to the file I had just been looking at earlier.
Two Shrivers mentioned in the same case sixteen years a part....
And I’m finally back after my break and then getting sick. I changed my schedule to it will update every Tuesday fortnightly instead of every Tuesday that way I’m not rushing myself for ideas within a week if I don’t have anything thought out then.
Alright, I know I said I don’t like plot-dumps, but this chapter has quite a bit going on in it and was the main reason I took that four-week break. I couldn’t figure out a lot of the information for this chapter, so I needed a break to help my brain flow with ideas and it helped. Thanks for being patient.
Naomi Bailey just wants to live a normal life. She doesn’t want to have anything to do with anyone. That all changes when she meets a mysterious boy; who claims he can’t find his body. This leads the reluctant girl to help the boy, making the two go on a journey of mystery, friendship and … acceptance…
Updates Tuesday fortnightly now (AEST - Australian Eastern Time) between 12pm and 9pm (Changed schedule) (On HIATUS until more ideas come to me, sorry)
The cover is drawn by me, but I plan on doing a better cover in the future when I have access to a PC again.
