Finding Myself Again

Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Nov 22, 2022

“How was it there? Was the problem resolved?” my mom asked while driving.

“Temporarily. But it’s enough to give the employees there the time they need to come up with a permanent solution,” my dad answered.

“That’s good.” She stopped for a moment.

“You’ve worked hard,” my mom added with a smile.

My dad smiled back widely while looking at my mom. After awhile, he held my mom’s other hand and kissed it causing the both of them to smile again.

I, on the other hand, kept silent while listening to the both of them. I smiled as I witnessed their interaction. No matter how many times I see it, I am still amazed with their relationship. For so many years of being with each other, they still manage to be in love with each other which is rare for people in their profession. My mother is a university professor while my dad works as a general manager in a company. Considering they’re both busy with their career, they still find time to spend family day with me and go on dates with just the two of them.

I looked outside the window just as the car was pulled to a stop because of the red light. My sight bumped into another person’s on another car. I nodded my head, which he did too. I retracted my gaze and closed the window.

“What the hell? Why do I keep on bumping into him? From the airport until here? Why? And everytime I do we always seem to have an eye contact. Isn’t it enough that I just see him and he do not see me?” I thought to myself. I sighed and put that face at the back of my mind. I leaned back on my seat when I heard my father’s voice.

“Dawn, do you want to eat first before we go home?” he asked, looking back at me.

I smiled and said, “Is dad saying he doesn’t want to eat mom’s cooking?”

My father’s eyes widened in surprise since my mom rarely cooks at home due to her busy schedule at the university. He diverted his sight to my mom and asked, “Is it true?”

My mom looked at him and said, “What? You want to eat out? It’s also good if you want to.” She then raised her eyebrows.

He hurriedly picked up my mom’s hands, kissed it and said, “Did I say anything? I did not, right, Dawn?”

Not hearing any response from his one and only daughter, he looked back at me.

I was snickering silently at the back at my father’s silliness. As soon as he looked back at me, I can’t help myself but laugh.

He aggrievedly looked at me and back at my mother. “My daughter doesn’t love me anymore.”

My mom laughed at him and lightly pat his hair. “I’m still here,” she said lovingly which made my father smile widely.

I suppressed my laughter and said, “Dad, I still love you, okay?”

“Anyways, mom has prepared your favorite foods, so, you can eat to heart’s content later,” I added.

“That’s good,” he repeatedly said while laughing to himself. My mom’s eyes bumped into mine and we both smiled.

I then diverted my gaze outside when the car started to move again as the traffic light changed to green.

When I saw where we were heading, I was stunned with fear as I realized one thing. This leads to the road where my parents met with an accident that took their lives.
