Had Alastair been asked that question a week before he would have had a rather concise list. He was a bouncer by trade and save for the short time he worked as a dock hand and the briefest attempt at academics, he had been one his entire adult life. In the past week though he’d gotten experience in practically every other aspect of running an inn aside from the one in which he was hired.
Not that Alastair would complain. The work, though often hard, was a welcome change of pace from the violence typical to his normal job. In fact he was just grateful to be employed at all. He’d been on the road a couple weeks before stumbling upon the town and the money he carried was growing light. So as he typically did when he was broke and without access to his savings he walked into the inn references in hand.
“Don’t need any type of work like that done here fella. You best move on unless you’re looking to buy a drink or a room.” That had been the answer the owner gave, not even looking up from his desk as he delivered the words in a terse annoyed tone. A quick glance from one of the maids told him it wasn’t worth trying to argue. With a small sigh he packed up his references and went to make his exit.
“I’m sorry honey,” the maid said, patting his arm as he passed by. This caught the owner's attention. The man’s head shot up quickly with a furrowed glare as he got his first good look at Alastair. The fiery expression quickly faded to one of devious intrigue as he saw the man's size and physicality.
"Actually, hold up there boy,” he said, his voice now dripping with condescension. “You know a bouncer might not be a bad thing to have around. A kind of have and not need than need and not have sort of thing.”
As he spoke he waved the man over but shook his head when he went to take a seat. “Now you won't be doing much bouncing most nights and I don’t like idle hands so if I were to hire you I’d expect you to do some other lite chores to keep busy.” As he spoke he put on a more amiable tone that would have only seemed more suspicious from an actual snake.
Alastair thought for a moment, but not long. While the owner clearly had a notion about taking advantage of him, he needed the money. So after shaking hands and settling on a wage, he was put to work. His first job came that same day when he unloaded a full cart of ale and flour by himself. According to the maids the owner normally hired a couple local men to do it but with Alastair he was saving half that cost.
That first day had set the tone for everyday since, and each new morning brought a new task or job. Stableboy was just the latest trade to be added to his resume coming right after his stint as a roofer which had been preceded by a small detour as a launderer.
With all that in mind he gave a small chuckle and shrug to the girl's statement . “That’s a good question. What do you need and we can see if I’m up to it.”
Sinine giggled at the answer, lifting her hand to her lip as she did. Her laugh was pleasant and Alastair liked the way it hit his ears. It was soft and warm like when the sun shined on a cold day.
