K: So, we’ll start with Magical Girl Magical Destroyers and...um...
A: Um...
K: What did we just watch?
A: I...I don’t know. This was weird even by our standards.
K: Compelling, though.
A: Very compelling. Just...very odd.
K: I mean, it looks like the closing titles are suggesting that the entire thing is happening in Otaku Hero’s head...and that he’s actually in a coma...and the magical girls are his nurses...and then they wheel him away with a sheet over his face...
A: Yeah...
K: That explains why it’s so odd, and that’s...really dark.
A: Perhaps, but I’ve got a better theory.
K: Oh?
A: It’s a misdirect. The credits are trying to trick us! It’s not all happening in Otaku Hero’s head...it’s all happening in Anarchy’s head!
K: Wait, you mean the magical girl who’s Otaku Hero’s second-in-command?
A: Think about it! She does almost everything – Otaku Hero is just a figment of her imagination.
K: But we see him interact with people.
A: No, we see her imagine that he’s interacting with people. It’s all just her playing out multiple personalities. Otaku Hero is nothing but Anarchy.
K: So you’re basically saying that Magical Girl Magical Destroyers is Fight Club.
A: I don’t know what that is.
K: That famous movie from the 1990s? Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, “Don’t talk about Fight Club”? You haven’t seen it?
A: Doesn’t ring a bell. Besides, if you can’t talk about it, how is it useful for discussing Anarchy and her hallucinations?
K: No, “Don’t talk about Fight Club” is part of Fight Club.
A: Well, that doesn’t make any sense! If the movie doesn’t want you to talk about it, how is anybody ever going to see it? A movie can’t get famous unless people talk about it! That’s terrible marketing.
K: No, it’s a literal line from Fight Club. Lots of people saw it. I saw it.
A: And I told you, I don’t know anything about Fight Club. No point in talking about it, then.
K: Wait a moment...what you just said didn’t sound like a movie title.
A: It doesn’t matter, because we can’t talk about it.
K: But if you haven’t seen Fight Club, how do you know that you’re not supposed to talk about Fight Club?
A: Because you just told me not to! Why are we still talking about this?
K: Because your theory is a description of the plot of Fight Club...which you’re claiming you’ve never seen!
A: And I still don’t know anything about Fight Club.
K: Wait a moment...you’ve travelled the story worlds alone...were you in Fight Club?
A: Do I look like somebody who could be in Fight Club?
K: Well, Fight Club was all men...
A: There you go.
K: ...Right. So, what you’re saying is that Otaku Hero is...Tyler Durden?
A: I don’t know who that is.
K: Oh well, I guess you don’t. So, to wrap up, who’s your candidate for best girl?
If you’d like to read the adventures of Aquila and Kasumi, you can find them in Re:Apotheosis – Aftermath, Re:Apotheosis – Metamorphosis, and Re: Apotheosis - Genesis (all available in print and e-book editions).
NOTE: This series is now on hiatus as Aquila and Kasumi go on their new adventure.
Aquila is a former god of destruction with light blue hair, along with a penchant for military coats and popped collars, who waged a personal war against the world of her creator. Kasumi is her creator, who Aquila saved through a miracle and is now Aquila’s partner in all things. Now that Aquila has atoned for her actions, she and Kasumi are touring the story worlds with their friends...while taking a bit of time to watch some TV and movies.
Come join Aquila and Kasumi on the couch for a nice chill chat as they talk about the latest thing they’ve sat down and enjoyed.
WARNING: There will be spoilers.
New episodes every other Saturday.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: All of the media Aquila and Kasumi review here I consider to be good and worth watching. I do not like the current mean-spiritedness that pervades pop culture discourse, and as such I never want to use these characters to tear down or encourage hate watching a show. It’s meant to be good natured fun, and that’s all there is to it.
