Like groundhog day, I awake again, more exhausted and drained than the time before, I lay lethargic on some type of elevated surface with walls closed in on all sides. My attention comes into focus and I recognize I must be in some type of clinical room, on a table for examination. Not unlike if I was going to be autopsied, though this time, I’m not dead. I turn my head, feeling the soreness in my neck send jolts of pain but I manage to turn it just enough to see someone in a thoroughly wrinkled, almost soot stained, doctor's coat next to me.
“Do you remember what happened?” The man dressed as a doctor asks.
“Are you really a doctor?” I ask, instead of answering his original question.
“Good question. Is anybody anyone any longer? This is a clinic I’ve been running for over 30 years, I’m not going to let tyranny close shop. It’s thanks to the people risking their lives to smuggle medications and equipment that anyone can get care here, and I’d be gla”
As I am staring at him speechless, he continues.
“So, remember what happened?”
“I had a vision and fell, I think I was knocked out.”
“The person who brought you here did tell me that you were in line for lunch at a dehomed shelter. He said that you began wobbling on your feet. He was talking to you but you didn’t respond and suddenly fell to the ground.” He says, looking at a clipboard and flipping a piece of paper over. “You experienced a vision?”
“Yeah, it was as if I was daydreaming, I reply honestly.
“Is this the first time?” He asks seriously.
“The second.” I reply flatly.
He pauses a moment before beginning again, “Second vision in how long? How much sleep have you had?”
“The first one was the day before. I’ve been getting too much sleep quite frankly.”
He seems to ponder it for a moment.
“Most likely, this is nothing serious but I do have a couple more questions. Have you had any headaches lately?”
“I had a migraine before and during the visions.”
“I would be more inclined to believe that migraines would be causing some of these hallucinations, and your body’s reaction to them was lowering your blood pressure leading to your falls. I’m going to prescribe you some migraine medication to take but if you are experiencing any more symptoms after 48 hours, please come back here. It is rare for people to experience ‘visions’ from migraines but god knows we all have been experiencing a lot of stress lately.”
“Do I have to pay for that?” I ask, my voice coming out confrontational.
“The man who brought you in is covering for you.” He says flatly.
“Great.” I mumble under my breath.
