Kasumi: That was a spectacular movie. The monster fights were just amazing!
Aquila: That they were.
K: It really was just a visual feast for the eyes.
Aquila: No disagreement there.
K: Okay, what’s up?
A: It’s nothing, really.
K: Your mind is on something else. What is it?
A: Well...here’s the thing...
K: Yes?
A: What do they eat?
K: Sorry?
A: The kaiju – those giant monsters have to get hungry, right? So, what do they eat?
K: I think Godzilla eats fish.
A: If Godzilla ate fish, fish would become extinct. He’s too big. No, he has to eat something else. And then there’s King Ghidorah...
K: What about King Ghidorah?
A: He comes from another planet, right? They literally say in the movie that he’s not part of the natural order. So, there’s probably nothing on Earth that he can eat! But, I’ve got a theory.
K: Oh?
A: The monsters don’t eat anything at all – they get their sustenance from energy.
K: I think I’m following you.
A: And, we see the evidence of it in the movie. Godzilla has atomic breath, so he’s nuclear. King Ghidorah has electricial breath, so he eats electricity, and we see him do that in the final battle, too.
K: That...that actually makes a lot more sense than I thought it would.
A: Kasumi, I am an entirely logical person – of course it makes sense!
K: Okay...
A: What you have to think about is the potential for application.
K: What do you mean?
A: Think about it! These kaijus are basically giant rechargeable batteries. One of them could probably power a city for days! If you could just get it to stay docile, the possibilities are endless! Need emergency power after an earthquake? Bring out Godzilla and plug everything into him. And if you keep him happy, he won’t mind at all!
K: That seems like a bit of a stretch.
A: Really, the big problem is preventing him from stepping on something important on the way there...
K: And moving on, what did you think of the story?
A: It was good, but it had one big problem.
K: What’s that?
A: Those kaiju are out of their natural environment! They need to go back.
K: And that natural environment is?
A: Isn’t it obvious? Japan. Tokyo in particular.
K: I think the kaiju go wherever they want.
A: But where they belong is Japan! Think of all the disruption they’re causing in Japan by being somewhere else.
K: I think the phrase you mean is “lack of disruption.”
A: I mean exactly what I said. In a world with giant monsters, just what do you think drives urban renewal? Think about how many construction companies are dependent on kaiju-related destruction for their business! Why, with all of Japan’s kaiju terrorizing North America, those companies will be struggling terribly! Some might even be going bankrupt as we speak!
K: I think you may be missing the point here.
A: Japan needs to demand the return of its giant monsters! The entire construction industry of Tokyo is suffocating without them!
K: ...and, wrapping up, who’s your candidate for best girl?
A: Mothra.
K: I...I can actually see that, yes.
A: It’s her wings that really does it for me.
K: So, we liked Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and, um, apparently America needs to repatriate Japan’s kaiju...

NOTE: This series is now on hiatus as Aquila and Kasumi go on their new adventure.
Aquila is a former god of destruction with light blue hair, along with a penchant for military coats and popped collars, who waged a personal war against the world of her creator. Kasumi is her creator, who Aquila saved through a miracle and is now Aquila’s partner in all things. Now that Aquila has atoned for her actions, she and Kasumi are touring the story worlds with their friends...while taking a bit of time to watch some TV and movies.
Come join Aquila and Kasumi on the couch for a nice chill chat as they talk about the latest thing they’ve sat down and enjoyed.
WARNING: There will be spoilers.
New episodes every other Saturday.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: All of the media Aquila and Kasumi review here I consider to be good and worth watching. I do not like the current mean-spiritedness that pervades pop culture discourse, and as such I never want to use these characters to tear down or encourage hate watching a show. It’s meant to be good natured fun, and that’s all there is to it.
