Kasumi: It was! And the worldbuilding was incredible – a cautionary tale about the importance of living your life in the real world.
A: Great direction too. The entire Oasis virtual world was brought to brilliant life.
K: Indeed.
A: And, I’ve got to say, I feel really sorry for that poor T-Rex.
K: Oh?
A: Well, you saw what happened to him in the race. He got let out, and then when he rampaged, he was put back into this little box under the racing environment.
K: Well, yes, but I’m pretty sure he’s just a game asset. The whole elevator under the racetrack is there to represent him being loaded into the game.
A: He’s not being loaded into anywhere, other than that little box! He’s a prisoner! The Oasis is prejudiced against dinosaurs!
K: You may be over-thinking this.
A: Think about it, Kasumi! Being stuck in a box until you’re let out through a slow-moving, giant elevator into the middle of a busy street...of course you’d want to rampage! And then you get punished for it by being put back into the little box. It’s a vicious cycle – if they just let the T-Rex out of the box more often, he’d be much less angry.
K: I’m pretty sure he’s supposed to rampage in the race. Also, I don’t remember the elevator being that slow.
A: Any elevator is slow when you’ve been stuck in a box all day. It’s just inhumane. Somebody should call the Humane Society on the Oasis.
K: I don’t know if that would accomplish anything.
A: It would enforce good pet ownership, if nothing else! Tyrannosaurs need exercise and food, just like any other domesticated animal. Whoever owns that T-Rex needs to take him out for regular walks.
K: Would that risk it, um, eating the neighbours?
A: Not if you proper house-train it first.
K: I see.
A: You have to be logical about these things, Kasumi.
K: So what did you think of the second challenge?
A: What, you mean the dancing zombies in the recreation of The Shining?
K: Yes, that?
A: Completely unrealistic.
K: What, the zombies dancing in midair? One of them fell apart as they danced. Seemed realistic to me...for a certain, very loose definition of “realistic”.
A: No, no, not that – it’s the smell.
K: The smell?
A: Of course! The zombies are rotting flesh – they’d have a terrible smell. And our heroes, the High-5, don’t react to it at all.
K: I see. I suppose...
A: And then you have to consider the sanitary issues.
K: Sanitary issues?
A: Absolutely! Hotels are closely regulated, Kasumi. You don’t want guests staying at a hotel and getting sick. And zombies are a massive sanitary hazard. No hotel would ever be allowed to keep them indoors.
K: I think you may be missing the point.
A: They would have to be outside, where they couldn’t contaminate any of the food.
K: I see.
A: It’s the only reasonable place for a hotel to keep its zombies. Granted, you run into problems if they ever get bitey, but that’s an entirely different issue...
K: So, finishing up, who’s your candidate for best girl?
A: The Iron Giant.
K: I see.
A: I can give you an explanation.
K: No, I think I’m good. So, we liked Ready Player One, and Tyrannosaurs and zombies apparently need to be kept outdoors and taken on regular walks.
If you’d like to read the adventures of Aquila and Kasumi, you can find them in Re:Apotheosis – Aftermath, Re:Apotheosis – Metamorphosis, and Re: Apotheosis - Genesis (all available in print and e-book editions).
NOTE: This series is now on hiatus as Aquila and Kasumi go on their new adventure.
Aquila is a former god of destruction with light blue hair, along with a penchant for military coats and popped collars, who waged a personal war against the world of her creator. Kasumi is her creator, who Aquila saved through a miracle and is now Aquila’s partner in all things. Now that Aquila has atoned for her actions, she and Kasumi are touring the story worlds with their friends...while taking a bit of time to watch some TV and movies.
Come join Aquila and Kasumi on the couch for a nice chill chat as they talk about the latest thing they’ve sat down and enjoyed.
WARNING: There will be spoilers.
New episodes every other Saturday.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: All of the media Aquila and Kasumi review here I consider to be good and worth watching. I do not like the current mean-spiritedness that pervades pop culture discourse, and as such I never want to use these characters to tear down or encourage hate watching a show. It’s meant to be good natured fun, and that’s all there is to it.
