Hello, and thank you so much for making a reservation here at Lonely Planet Hotel!
My name is Al Davidson/A.L. Davidson (she/they) and I am a disabled and queer author specializing in massive space operas and tiny disturbances. I write stories about ghosts, grief, isolation, queerness, eco-horror, space exploration, and the human condition. I'm a sucker for cozy sci-fi stories and horrormance. My debut novella - When The Rain Begins To Burn - is releasing on October 14th, and I am probably best known for my Futuristic Fairytale series of short stories - R-PNZL - which is returning to Kickstarter in November. I am also the Webcomics and Manga Editor for Comic Book Yeti, so I spend a lot of time here on Tapas and on other webtoon/webcomic platforms, usually reading BL and office romcoms.
Lonely Planet Hotel is my second web novel! It premiered on Patreon on August 19th, 2023 with a massive first chapter (so massive that it had to be split into two parts here on Tapas!) and I am excited to share it with everyone here on Tapas! This is a nerve-wracking and exciting step for me, since I've only ever posted my stuff on my website and Patreon, but I can't wait to introduce you to the hotel staff. LPH updates on Patreon with alternating chapters on Saturdays at 4:30pm CST alongside my other cozy sci-fi web novel, The Wayward Souls of Avalon (which will always be a Patreon exclusive and currently has over fifty available chapters), so you can expect an update on a bi-weekly schedule (pending holidays, life, existential dread, other deadlines, etc.) at least 2-3 chapters behind what's on Patreon!
This genre is a favorite of mine, I love sci-fi stories with cozy elements. Since my degree is in event management and tourism, getting to design a beautiful, massive hotel using all of those boring college textbooks I have lying around has been such a blast! The Planet was inspired by a lifelong love of space, 1920s Art Deco aesthetics, and that awesome little observatory in Majora's Mask (IYKYK).
Writing stories with diverse casts of individuals coming together to form a family that deals with authenti and honest day-to-day struggles and celebrations is something I adore, so the lively personalities you'll soon meet at the hotel mean a lot to me - and I hope you'll love them as much as I do. Writing about a wide variety of people is always an exciting thing for me, since it means I get to research and study religion, culture, and history, all the while getting to discuss these things with both loved ones and strangers to make sure I'm as accurate and realistic as possible in my storytelling. That being said, I am only human so if you see something in LPH that may need rephrased/adjusted/rewritten/expanded upon, PLEASE let me know! I want to be accurate and write characters that represent the best of us. I can't afford an editor at the moment (maybe some day once my Patreon picks up more!) so I do try and clean up everything as best I can but if I miss something, let me know and I can get it fixed cause sometimes I have manic writing episodes and become a BIT crazy with the commas.
Lonely Planet Hotel is only just getting started, and chapter 4 released on Patreon in sync with chapter 1, part 1 here on Tapas, so you can expect a long, cozy journey alongside Ellis and the motly crew of the Planet. Since it alternates chapters with The Wayward Souls of Avalon, it will be limited to 2 chapters a month, but Wayward Souls will wrap up in the spring of 2024 and open up room for more LPH content! Also, if you like Lonely Planet, I can guarantee you'll enjoy Wayward Souls, so please consider hopping on over to my Patreon and becoming a cosmonaut to get in on that slow burn romance action!
The Wayward Souls of Avalon follows a documentarian named Jocasta Thorne and a military commander named Troy McNamara, two strangers who meet after the collapse of Earth leaves them stranded in orbit. They begin making their way to humanity's new home on Mars aboard a space station called The Avalon, starting a year long journey of self discovery and romance. (It also features some fun spicy bonus content!)
Thank you again for reading Lonely Planet Hotel and taking the chance on my cozy sci-fi web novel! Make sure you subscribe so you get notified when those new chapters drop or, if you're impatient, heading to Patreon to read ahead! I appreciate you all a ton, and I can't wait to share this story with you!
When Ellis Hughes accepted a position at the mysterious Lonely Planet Hotel, he never expected to find himself on a plane bound for Antarctica. Forced to leave his technology behind, Ellis arrives on the doorstep of a grand, state of the art facility nestled in the frigid arctic wasteland early in the AM hours on New Year's Eve. The resort is secretive, exclusive, and completely hidden from public knowledge. Only those with high recommendations can book a season at the facility, and the incoming guests looking for a reprieve are not what he initially envisioned.
Run by the chipper Carlisle Hawthorne and his dedicated and hardworking staff, The Lonely Planet Hotel opens its doors for the first season of the year, thrusting Ellis into a world filled with artists, aristocrats, heirs and lost souls all looking for healing in the midst of a chaotic universe. The beautiful, isolated hotel offers rest for the weary, healing for the hurt, and family for the lonely, and Ellis' once chaotic, lonely life is suddenly made brighter under the glow of the Antarctic sun.
