Unmasking

I didn't even know I was masking until I was diagnosed. The more I learned about autism, the more I allowed myself the accommodations I realised I needed, like bringing headphones everywhere, stimming, and saying no to situations I knew would be too overwhelming. Even though not everyone likes it, it helped me a lot, and now I couldn't go back even if I wanted to.
Info: Unmasking is about allowing yourself to show the autistic traits you had been hiding (whether consciously or unconsciously) and and being your authentic self. That might be letting yourself stim when previously you might have suppressed it so you didn't stand out, realising you don't have to always follow the strange social rituals allistics seem to know naturally, getting accommodations at home/work/school etc. While masking can be useful is certain situations, it's difficult, exhausting, and takes a toll on your health.

Yeah, masking is the reason I've developed so much anxiety/ depression over the last 15 years. Finally getting over that crap! This is great advice! Don't let others' judgments beat you down. There are friends for you all out there, NT and ND types, just gotta get over that awkward hump that comes from first interactions (believe me, I'm even awkward around family...)
