I had somewhat literal thinking, made critical reading difficult in school (couldn't wrap my head around symbolism or metaphors, stuff that the author implied. Not sure how or why, but it finally clicked in high school, when we were learning Romantcism (literary movement focused on imagination) and my visual brain finally tied it all together. Also, writing your own symbols into fiction can help with grasping them. Least it helped me.
