Sabrina and I walked out, seething. “I have never seen so much disrespect ooze out of a single man… And I have seen a LOT of disrespect in my life.” I said as I crossed my arms and fumed.
Sabrina sighed. “There’s no point in worrying about him.”
“Why would you just let him scam you like that?!” I gestured back at the jailhouse. Sabrina looked at me and offered a small smile.
“Sometimes it’s better to just let it go.” She looked down at the ground and grinned sheepishly. “Sure, I would have loved to walk up to his desk and punch him in the face, but what could I have gained from that?”
“The satisfaction of giving him a broken nose,” I grumbled. Sabrina laughed.
“You know, walking away is a lot more difficult, but far more rewarding. I’m not going to lower myself to the Sheriff’s level just to slug him in the jaw. I’m better than him, and I won’t give him any satisfaction from knowing I care about what he says.” I felt a little stunned by this statement.
“I never thought about it like that…” I said. Sabrina looked away, somewhat flustered by the awe in my voice. She had given me a new perspective on life I had never considered.
“Of course, I’m no saint. I slip often, but I keep trying to do better…” She replied. The two of them walked down the moonlit street in silence for a few minutes.
“Oh! I almost forgot!” Sabrina exclaimed. “You should take some of the money. After all, I would never have caught Claw without you.”
“No, no, no. I have plenty of money already.” I blurted, waving my hands frantically. “I have no need for it. I was just happy to help out.”
Sabrina grinned. “Did you just help me because you thought I was cute?”
“What? No… I made a promise. I promised to tell you if I saw someone…” I mumbled, feeling flustered. “You were nice…” I continued, almost too quiet to hear. Sabrina gave me a smile that made me feel as if she could see right through my disguise and felt sorry for me… Then she turned, looking straight ahead before, suddenly, she stopped.
“Oh no- Gale must be worried sick! I should really be home by now. Sorry!” She dashed off into the night, but not before giving a little wave in my direction. I waved back halfheartedly, but she was already gone.
