“Welcome back.” The creator’s voice rings out in the endless void. “We see you’ve perished again quite quickly. Was this journey everything you had hoped for?” We think on the creator’s question. “We… are disappointed that it ended so abruptly.” “Yes. This, in itself, is a lesson. Life can end as quickly as it’s given. One minor error or miscalculation could be a mortal’s demise.” The creator’s words make little sense to us. “We do not understand… they are so fragile, yet attempt to thrive?” We still feel cold. This result does not appease our desire for answers. “Perhaps you should have utilized the knowledge in the mind of the body.”
“…What?”
“Yes. All the things you had thought, or all the things you were able to explain, were done so by peering into the collective memory of the host. Had you not noticed?” The creator… has said something that may have been important knowledge… “Why had you just now explained that this was a possibility?” We ask this question with some irritation in our tone. “We had assumed you understood this.” The creator… expects too much of us considering we have never interacted with a mortal before. This leaves us… even more disappointed…
“Tell me, from what you had experienced, what did you enjoy?” The creator’s question feels redundant since they had been watching us, however, we will humor the question. “We had enjoyed the time in the medical facility.” We explained. “Despite the lack of interaction in most of our time, the bright room and constant sounds had made us feel as though there were more than just us. The loneliness of the void had disappeared for the first time in our existence.”
As the words had left us, something… strange… happened in the endless void. It had changed into the medical facility room. Are we simply vividly recalling it all, or… is this an illusion? “Do you see it as we do, creator?” The creator is silent. “This space is yours. It shapes to your thoughts and memories. This is the first that you’ve had either, so this space will change accordingly. This is how we observed your experience.” This… is our space? We can… change the void? This… warms us greatly!
“This is why we wished for you to experience the life of mortals. So you would not be forced to experience nothing.” The creator had thought of us! We… are too grateful for this precious experience… but… we wonder if it could have been more… “Would you like to attempt to live again?” The creator offers us once more. “Is this acceptable? Would we not be defying our rule once more?” This question is not meant to change the creator’s mind, but a question of genuine curiosity.
“Technically, yes. However, you have no dedicated mortal host. Therefore, you are only defying the rule if you return to the same body twice.” This sounds like an extensive way to defy the rule… “Do not dwell on it too deeply. Just return with a much more extensive experience this time, do you understand?” We may not return to the body we once had, but that does not calm our excitement! “Yes, creator!” The flash of the distant star strikes once more, sending us back into mortal flesh!
Death knows itself and the rule it controls. All that lives must one day die. However, for the first time in their existence, Death questions why living things strive to continue when deep in their minds, they understand that all must eventually succumb to the rule. What makes them want to fight so hard to live? There must be something that keeps them from seeking the inevitable end.
Death speaks to the creator to ask for advice but still doesn't understand the creator's reasoning. Therefore, the creator allows for Death to experience life, sending them into the bodies of recently deceased people, and allowing them to find their own answers to their questions until the rule claims the deceased once more.
