The void… this will never be a sight that we enjoy. We have ruined another life. The creator must be disgusted with our actions this time. “Creator… we apologize for this situation we… I have caused.” The creator does not respond. This silence… our anticipation of what they may say is eating at us. We are nervous. “…What has this event taught you?” the creator says. We can feel the irritation in their tone. “We have… learned that we must… defend ourselves?” We had felt it was a broad question when, in fact, there was a specific answer the creator wanted.
“You have shown your own childishness this time. To end a mortal’s life as the being who holds the rule. This was not your objective.” The creator is scolding us… “We had only done what was best…” we said in defense. “Had you not considered ANY other options before that? Telling an authority figure or incapacitating rather than killing?” We pondered on these words. “We had incapacitated the two girls.” Why are we arguing? This is not like us. “The two girls will not survive your assault. One will perish during surgery from damaged interior organs. The other will end herself after realizing she will never look the same again. You may be the holder of the rule, but you aren’t allowed to enforce it!”
This… makes no sense. Am I not Death? Should we, above all, be allowed to enforce the rule? Who, then, decides their fate? This is another question that we now must answer. “Now, so long as you do not kill another mortal, you may continue your study. However, there will be NO second chances from this! Do you understand?” the creator… speaks to us as though we are a child. We wish to combat this attitude, but we wish to continue our studies. “…Yes. We will not kill again.”
“Do not misunderstand. You had done well.” The creator… is now… complimenting us? “You had done what that girl was afraid to do. While excessive, the opportunity had presented itself to better the life of that girl. You had nearly found an answer to your question.” We… nearly answered our question? We did not feel as though we were close to an answer. This… has become complicated. The creator knows something that we do not.
“Alright.” The creator says to us. “We will find an easier mortal to host you. Do not cause such a stir again.” This may be difficult. What does an “easier” mortal mean? Is there less people to provoke us? Will they be a more mature being? Will they have food? We suppose we’ll see. Our next objective should be to live longer than one day.
Death knows itself and the rule it controls. All that lives must one day die. However, for the first time in their existence, Death questions why living things strive to continue when deep in their minds, they understand that all must eventually succumb to the rule. What makes them want to fight so hard to live? There must be something that keeps them from seeking the inevitable end.
Death speaks to the creator to ask for advice but still doesn't understand the creator's reasoning. Therefore, the creator allows for Death to experience life, sending them into the bodies of recently deceased people, and allowing them to find their own answers to their questions until the rule claims the deceased once more.
