A: A lot of good stuff this winter. And I’m loving The Unwanted Undead Adventurer.
K: It’s a really good show, with a great concept.
A: You really get a sense of Rentt’s struggle. He wants to be part of a society that would fear him if they ever knew he was an undead monster, even though he has a human mind and soul. On a fundamental level, that just speaks to you.
K: Definitely a character you can root for.
A: That said, he really does miss the obvious a lot, doesn’t he?
K: What, you mean Lorraine’s feelings for him? You’d think he’d have figured that out long ago from all the dinner dates alone.
A: Well, sure, but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about something far more obvious.
K: Oh?
A: Well, he doesn’t need to keep evolving into more human looking undead, does he? He can gain acceptance, wealth, and even fame just as he is, if only he had the courage to take the plunge.
K: The plunge into what?
A: Acting. The theatre! He could be a star player!
K: The theatre.
A: Think about it, Kasumi! This is a world with lots of undead. Do you really think the playwrights of this world don’t tell stories about undead? And any plays about them will require actors to spend ages in makeup before going on the stage. But Rentt won’t need to do any of that – he can go on just as he is!
K: I see a lot of problems with that.
A: But fame would make those problems go away. People let famous people get away with almost anything. And consider Rentt’s performances – they’ll be incredibly authentic. He’ll barely need to act. Fame and fortune are his, and all he has to do is step on the stage without a mask.
K: You mean the one that’s magically attached to him and won’t come off?
A: Okay, perhaps a bit of makeup will be required. But only on his face.
K: And what about the fact that he’s still an undead monster with a craving for human flesh? I mean, he bit a chunk out of Lorraine!
A: When you’re famous you can get away with biting lots of people. Besides, Lorraine was into it.
K: She’s in love with him.
A: Oh, it was more than that. She’s awfully eager to see him become a vampire, isn’t she? And then there are all those books in her house...
K: I’m really not sure where you’re going with this.
A: What I’m saying is that after all those years of secretly writing Twilight fanfiction, she’s getting to live the dream!
K: Twilight fanfiction.
A: Yes.
K: That vampire series famous for being terrible.
A: Rentt is her Edward!
K: How would she even find out that Twilight exists?
A: The internet. Where else?
K: In a Medieval society.
A: Can you think of a society that would better benefit from it?
K: How would she get an internet connection?
A: Magic. She gets it through a crystal ball.
K: And she uses that to read Twilight.
A: She’s not exactly living in a place with a bustling cultural scene, is she? She’s got to get her entertainment somewhere.
K: So, what you’re telling me is that, as Captain Infinite would say in English, because she’s a Twilight fan she’s happy to pay her Rentt.
A: ...you’re so lucky that you’re my creator.
K: I know. Who’s your candidate for best girl?
A: Bella Swan.
K: The heroine from Twilight?
A: Think of all the romance she’s helping inspire between Lorraine and Rentt!
K: Right then...to sum up, we liked The Unwanted Undead Adventurer, and if you want to get and keep a boyfriend, always be willing to pay your Rentt.
If you’d like to read the adventures of Aquila and Kasumi, you can find them in Re:Apotheosis – Aftermath, Re:Apotheosis – Metamorphosis, and Re: Apotheosis - Genesis (all available in print and e-book editions).
NOTE: This series is now on hiatus as Aquila and Kasumi go on their new adventure.
Aquila is a former god of destruction with light blue hair, along with a penchant for military coats and popped collars, who waged a personal war against the world of her creator. Kasumi is her creator, who Aquila saved through a miracle and is now Aquila’s partner in all things. Now that Aquila has atoned for her actions, she and Kasumi are touring the story worlds with their friends...while taking a bit of time to watch some TV and movies.
Come join Aquila and Kasumi on the couch for a nice chill chat as they talk about the latest thing they’ve sat down and enjoyed.
WARNING: There will be spoilers.
New episodes every other Saturday.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: All of the media Aquila and Kasumi review here I consider to be good and worth watching. I do not like the current mean-spiritedness that pervades pop culture discourse, and as such I never want to use these characters to tear down or encourage hate watching a show. It’s meant to be good natured fun, and that’s all there is to it.
