Aquila: I’m really enjoying Tales of Wedding Rings!
Kasumi: Same here. It’s sort of a cross between a guilty pleasure and good characters and storytelling.
A: And you really feel for Satou and Hime. They love each other so much, and they don’t want to be in a harem, but they’re trapped in one anyway.
K: It’s rough for the other girls too. Imagine being destined to marry somebody and then discovering that you’ll spend your entire married life being a third wheel.
A: It’s quite the raw deal.
K: And if it wasn’t for the need to collect all of those rings, they’d all be able to lead better, more fulfilling lives where they don’t have to share their husband.
A: And there aren’t even enough rings!
K: Exactly! And...wait, what?
A: I mean, there’s only five wedding rings.
K: Well, ten if you count that there’s two per marriage.
A: And then there’s perhaps five for the Abyss King and his Abyss Knights. That’s fifteen.
K: Right...not seeing where you’re going with this.
A: And that’s not even close to the number in The Lord of the Rings, is it?
K: Sorry, what?
A: Well, I mean, there needs to at least be ring parity. And The Lord of the Rings has three for the Elves, seven for the Dwarves, nine for mortal Men, and the One Ring. That’s twenty!
K: Still not seeing this...
A: Think of it Kasumi – Tales of Wedding Rings has only 75% of the magical rings compared to The Lord of the Rings. That’s not even close to parity!
K: Why would it need parity?
A: For competition, of course! The Lord of the Rings has a clear superiority in magical rings. The only way to close that gap is for Tales of Wedding Rings to get more rings!
K: So you’re saying this is a magical rings arms race?
A: They need to close the magical rings gap!
K: I’m pretty sure Tales of Wedding Rings and The Lord of the Rings are not in direct competition.
A: And if they ever go into direct competition, Tales of Wedding Rings will lose!
K: I’m pretty sure that’s not how it works...any of it.
A: And even if they do close the gap, Tales of Wedding Rings has an even bigger ring problem.
K: Like what?
A: Kasumi, the rings talk. They are sentient beings.
K: That does seem true, yes.
A: And what legal rights do they have?
K: Um...
A: None! They are basically slaves to whoever is wearing them!
K: I suppose that’s true.
A: There are no legal protections to save those poor rings from exploitation!
K: Well, they are rings.
A: That’s no excuse! Any being that can think can also dream, and deserves the right to self-determination!
K: So you’re saying that...
A: Those rings deserve universal suffrage at once!
K: Okay then...moving on, who’s your candidate for best girl?
A: Best girls. The catfolk...all of them.
K: That’s a lot...
A: Oh, come on! They have such cute furry ears! You can’t expect me to want to pet just one!
K: Right...to sum up, we liked Tales of Wedding Rings, and apparently wedding rings should have the right to vote...

NOTE: This series is now on hiatus as Aquila and Kasumi go on their new adventure.
Aquila is a former god of destruction with light blue hair, along with a penchant for military coats and popped collars, who waged a personal war against the world of her creator. Kasumi is her creator, who Aquila saved through a miracle and is now Aquila’s partner in all things. Now that Aquila has atoned for her actions, she and Kasumi are touring the story worlds with their friends...while taking a bit of time to watch some TV and movies.
Come join Aquila and Kasumi on the couch for a nice chill chat as they talk about the latest thing they’ve sat down and enjoyed.
WARNING: There will be spoilers.
New episodes every other Saturday.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: All of the media Aquila and Kasumi review here I consider to be good and worth watching. I do not like the current mean-spiritedness that pervades pop culture discourse, and as such I never want to use these characters to tear down or encourage hate watching a show. It’s meant to be good natured fun, and that’s all there is to it.
