"It's about Ha-rin's death, isn't it?" asked Liam.
"...Yes, it is."
"So, what do you wanna know?"
"How was your relationship with her?"
"I wouldn't say it was the happiest. She got busy with her work as an idol. We barely got time for each other. So, we broke up."
"On the evening of 21st November, where were you?"
"I was having dinner with some of my colleagues."
Min-young sank into deep thought. "Where were you guys eating?"
"Thai and Mighty. Why?"
"You don't have to know why. Just answer my questions. Do you know anyone by the name Gae-Baek Hyun?"
"Nope."
Min-young began to get an uneasy feeling. "Alright, that's all for now. Give me your phone number." After getting his number, Min-young was about to leave he noticed a tattoo on Liam's neck. It was red and looked like a moon.
"Nice tattoo," said Min-young.
"Thanks." With this, Min-young left. Liam then took out a box of cigarettes and a lighter to smoke.
Min-young called Nam-gil on the phone.
"Hello?"
"Get some of your men to keep a close eye on Liam Jong?"
"Why? Did you find something?"
"This case hasn't been made public yet."
"Yeah. So?"
"Yet he knows that Kim Ha-rin died."
"Alright."
"Did you find anything from Gae Baek-Hyun's family?"
"They haven't been in contact with him for three months. Long story short, they're willing to cooperate with us. Where are you?"
"Heading to a restaurant."
"Isn't it still a bit early to have lunch?"
"It's not for lunch."
"Then for what?"
"CCTV footage."
"Care to explain what's going on?"
"I'll tell you everything later." Min-young hung up.
Nam-gil let out a sigh. "I guess he wasn't joking when he said he worked alone."
Meanwhile, Dae-jung and Ji-won gave up searching for info about the Sanguis Lunae account. They couldn't find even a single piece of information about the account. They even tried asking bank officials but there was no luck. After working relentlessly, they were pretty exhausted.
It was 1:30 p.m. when Nam-gil came back to the police station. He was quite surprised after seeing Dae-jung and Ji-Won-'s condition. It was as if they were corpses.
"Let me guess. You guys didn't find anything?"
"Yep!" Ji-Won exclaimed.
"It's as if the account doesn't even exist," said Dae-jung.
"And yet there was still a transfer made to this account. Anyway, you guys can stop searching for information about that account..."
"For real?!" Dae-jung asked with excitement.
"For now."
"..."
"It's lunchtime." Nam-gil walked toward the cafeteria. Dae-jung was so angry that one of his veins was about to pop. He grabbed Ji-Won's coffee mug and was about to throw it. Just then Ji-Won used all his force to restrain Dae-jung without making noise. Nam-gil was whistling as he entered the cafeteria.
Hwan, Do-yun, and Byung-ho also arrived.
"Oh, hey there!" Ji-Won exclaimed. "Did you guys find the owner?"
"Nope," said Byung-ho.
It was 2:26 p.m. when Min-young came back to the police station. "Ah! You're here. Did you have lunch?" asked Nam-gil.
"Not yet."
"Have a seat. Boss! One more serving of Kimchi for Min-young."
"One more Kimchi coming up."
Min-young took a seat. "So, care to explain why went to the restaurant?" asked Nam-gil.
"You went to a restaurant?! And you didn't eat lunch?" asked Do-yun.
"Why to eat at a restaurant when you can eat for free at the police station's cafeteria," said Min-young.
"Ahh, that makes sense." Just then Dae-jung noticed sweat roll down from Min-young's forehead. "May I know which restaurant you went to, Captain?"
"Thai and Mighty."
"Ahh, I know that restaurant. The food served there is quite expensive...right, Captain Min-young?"
Min-young immediately began to cough. "I'm sorry, can I have some water?" The other officers started to giggle. Ji-Won tried his best not to laugh. "What's so funny?" Min-young asked.
"I knew it. HE'S BROKE! " Dae-jung murmured to himself.
"Alright, that's enough. Answer my question now," said Nam-gil.
One of the cafeteria staff members came a placed the serving of Kimchi in front of Min-young. Min-young then began explaining the conversation he had with Liam Jong while eating. After doing so, he placed a pen drive on the table and said, "This has the CCTV footage of the restaurant on 21st November. I also asked the manager about Liam Jong."
"What did he say?"
"He said that he was a regular."
"Which means he is rich," said Dae-jung.
"Ahem...I guess he is. Well, I also asked him if Liam came to the restaurant that evening. He said that he doesn't remember."
After fifteen minutes, they all gathered in the living room. Min-young gave a photo of Liam Jong to everyone. Hwan then played the video CCTV footage in the pen drive.
"So what are we searching for exactly?" asked Byung-ho.
"To see if Liam Jong went to this restaurant that evening."
In the footage, the place was crowded. "Rare to see a restaurant that serves expensive food having so many customers. Well, Now it's gonna be even harder to find him," said Ji-Won. After spending five hours doing nothing but observing CCTV footage, they didn't find Liam in any of the footage. They even replayed every single footage several times just to be sure.
"Well, I guess we've found our culprit then. Let's arrest him quickly!" Dae-jung exclaimed.
"Hold your horses. Just because he wasn't at the restaurant that evening doesn't mean he was the one who killed Ha-rin or the dog. I get that you're eager to close this case and rest Dae-jung. But, what if you arrest someone who is not guilty?" asked Min-young. "Think of it this way. If I told you I was the murderer, you would still have to find several pieces of evidence to arrest me."
"Ahh, I guess you're right. Sorry."
"So what now?" asked Ji-Won.
"Everyone get back to the work you were assigned," Nam-gil ordered.
"Did you assign anyone to keep an eye on Liam Jong yet?" asked Min-young.
"Yeah. I did it immediately after you hung up on me. What are you gonna do now?"
Min-young scrolled through his phone's contacts and clicked on Liam Jong. After waiting for a few minutes, no one picked up. "I'll keep trying."
"I'm going to Bio-Tech, the company Gae Baek-Hyun works for."
"Ahh! I'll come with you."
On their way, Nam-gil asked Min-young, "What do you think about the dog?"
"Well...I don't think the dog belongs to anyone?"
"How so?"
"The murderer is smart. What if he put a collar on the dog on purpose? That way, he could fool the police into believing that the dog belongs to someone. However, the dog was experimented on and several foreign substances were found. Based on my experience in dealing with cases related to animal abuse, animals are usually experimented on for a few days and are then disposed of. So, if the dog was taken away from the owner, the most common action to take would be to put up posters about their missing dog. But Byung-ho and Do-yun said that there was nothing of that sort that happened. Which means the dog was a street dog."
"Damn."
"It's just a theory. I don't have any evidence to prove it. It's also possible that it was the owner who experimented on the dog."
"We're here."
Min-young looked outside the window of the police cruiser. It was a huge building. They went inside. One of the security guards stopped them on their way. "May I know what business you two have?"
Nam-gil took out his badge and showed it to the security guard. The guard then immediately moved away. "I apologize."
"You know what? Let's wear our uniforms next time. It's kind of annoying to show our badges to everyone and tell them that we're the police," said Min-young.
"I'm pretty sure you've heard of the saying don't judge a book by its cover."
"Well, in the world we live in...people will believe anything."
Just then a woman wearing a lab coat walked towards them. "Is there anything I can help you with?"
"You are?" asked Min-young.
"Ahh! Sorry. My name is Chae-Yeong. I'm a senior biochemist at Bio-Tech."
"Senior eh? By any chance, Do you know any employee by the name Gae Baek-Hyun?"
"Yes, I do. He hasn't come to work for three months. He doesn't even pick up any of my calls. But, unfortunately, he is not here. Do you have some work with him?"
"We are currently investigating a case. Before I ask you anything, you must promise that whatever we talk about right now will stay between us. The case hasn't been made public yet."
"I understand. I promise."
"Well, I can't tell you the exact details. What I can say is that we have found drugs in his house. One of the drugs is still unidentified," said Nam-gil. "I brought a sample with me." Nam-gil took out the sample from his pocket and gave it to Chae-Yong.
"Can you tell me anything about Gae Baek-Hyun?"
"Well, he is a pretty hardworking person, always kind to his lab mates. Sometimes a little short-tempered. But overall he is not a bad person. He is not the type of person who would deal with drugs."
"I see." Nam-gil looked at his watch and said, "They should be here by now."
"Who?" Min-young asked. Just then a large number of police cruisers arrived in front of the building. Several officers came into the building, wearing gloves.
"You're raiding this place?! Why didn't you tell me?"
"You didn't ask."
"Do you have a warrant?" asked Chae-Yong.
"Of course I do."
