The three police officers assigned to Liam got into another taxi. "Boss! Please follow that taxi."
"Why?"
"JUST DO IT! Don't ask questions."
The driver immediately stepped on the accelerator and began to chase the taxi Liam was in.
Liam's taxi stopped in front of a tall building. He got out of the car and ran inside. The three officers also got out of their taxi. One of the officers took out his wallet, grabbed some cash, and handed it to the driver. He then ran into the building with the others. They saw Liam running into an elevator.
They ran as fast as they could. However, they were a second late and the elevator closed. The only choice they had now was to take the stares. One of them stayed back to see on which floor the elevator stopped. The building consisted of 30 floors.
After a few minutes, the officer who stayed back said, "It stopped on the 30th floor. He's on the roof." He then pressed the elevator button again and waited for it to come back down. The other two were still running up the stairs.
It was pretty exhausting. After some time, the officers finally reach the roof. They began panting like dogs. The two of them then looked around to find Liam. However, there was no one there.
"Didn't he say that the elevator stopped on the roof? Then where is he?"
Just then he heard a gun click behind his back. He was about to turn back when he felt an object pressing against him. He realized it was a gun.
"Don't move or I will shoot," said Liam. The other officer noticed this and pointed his taser gun at him.
"DROP YOUR WEAPON IF YOU WANT HIM ALIVE!" Liam ordered. The officer hesitated for a few seconds and finally dropped his taser gun.
"Put your hands up."
The officer had no choice but to obey. "You think I didn't know you guys were keeping a watch on me? HUH?!"
"Liam, it doesn't have to be this way. Put the gun down."
"Oh it does-" Liam was suddenly zapped by a taser gun. He then fell to the ground, unconscious. The police officer immediately cuffed his hands.
"You could have come a bit earlier, you know."
"I took the elevator."
One of the officers called Nam-gil. "Captain, we've subdued him."
"Hold him there. We're coming."
After twenty minutes, the rest of the officers finally arrived. Nam-gil looked at Liam and said, "Wake him up."
Hwan threw a punch across Liam's face. "WAKE UP, DUMBASS!"
When Liam came back to his senses, he was surprised to see that he was surrounded by police officers.
"You are under arrest, Liam Jong," said Min-young.
"For what?"
"For the murder of Kim Ha-rin and Gae Baek-Hyun as well as animal abuse."
Dae-jung interrupted, "Wait a sec, how-"
Hwan cut him off mid-sentence. "Shush it."
"What?! Why would I murder them?!" asked Liam.
"Stop playing dumb."
"What evidence do you have?"
Min-young took a deep breath. "Will you say it...or should I?"
Sweat rolled down from Liam's forehead. There was a minute of awkward silence.
"Very well then. If you don't want to say it, I will." Everyone listened very attentively to what Min-young had to say.
"On the morning of 22nd November, the body of Kim Harin was found in Gae Baek Hyun's house. Aside from that, a body of a dog was also found in the backyard. The body of the deceased was found without any clothes. All of her belongings were missing. At first, it looked like rape. But there wasn't enough evidence to confirm it. After the autopsy was done, it was found that the deceased never engaged in sexual activity. The cause of death was poison. The dog on the other hand...You did a good job putting a collar on it. We were almost fooled."
Min-young continued to explain their progress on the case. "Drugs also entered the picture. It was a new drug. Samples were found in Gae Baek Hyun's house. This made him our prime suspect."
"So shouldn't you arrest him then? What do I have anything to with this?!"
"It was a good plan. So...where was the mistake?"
"I don't...I don't understand what you're saying."
"Well, to be honest, there were almost none. But things changed after I met you. You asked me whether it was about the death of Kim Ha-rin. But we haven't made the case public yet. So how did you know about it? You also lied about eating with your friends in a restaurant. I tried calling you several times but you didn't pick up."
"I was busy! And that doesn't prove that I am the murderer. You are accusing me!"
"You're right...that doesn't prove that you are the murderer. But if you did nothing wrong...then why did you run? And why do you have a gun with you?"
Liam was speechless.
"But guess what, we found Gae Baek-Hyun's body three hours ago."
"THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE! I DUMPED HIS BODY IN-"
Liam realized that he just gave himself away.
"You don't think before you talk, do you?"
Liam then clenched his fists. "FINE! I admit. I am the murderer. What will you do now? Put me behind bars? Take me to the court? Then do it already."
"Yes, I will do that...after you answer some of my questions."
"What questions?"
"First, tell me why you killed them."
Liam looked away and refused to answer.
"Before Kim Ha-rin died, there was a money transaction from her account to another account named Sanguis Lunae."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Of course, you don't. The account doesn't belong to you in the first place. But anyway, when I tried calling you today, a woman picked up instead." Liam's eyes widened all of a sudden. "And for some reason, she thought that she was talking to you. Care to explain?"
Liam hesitated for a few seconds. "It's fine if you don't want to answer that question. Just answer the next one. Who planned all of this?"
"What do you mean?" Liam asked. Not only Liam, but all the officers as well had the same question.
"You're too stupid to plan this type of murder. So, who was it?"
Liam bit his lips indicating that he was hiding something. "Was it the woman in the phone call? Or someone else?" asked Min-young.
"I can't tell you."
"Why?"
"Because I'll die if I do."
"You're going to die anyway. You killed two people. You think the court will spare your life?"
"YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. HE'S DANGEROUS!"
"And I don't care."
After a few seconds of hesitation, Liam kicked Min-young in the guts and ran toward the edge of the building. "Get him!" Nam-gil ordered. All the officers ran behind Liam. Nam-gil helped Min-young get up.
Liam then got up on the edge of the building. This made the officers stop in their tracks. Liam looked down. Looking at the distance made him feel dizzy. He would definitely not survive the fall.
"Get down, now," Hwan ordered. Liam turned to face the police officers. He began to breathe heavily.
"I'm going to die anyway."
Liam closed his eyes and jumped off the edge. The next second, there was a loud bang along with the shattering of glass. This created a huge commotion. People gathered around the body. Some were taking videos. There was blood all over the place. Parents covered their children's eyes.
Min-young ran to the edge and looked down. "God Damnit!"
Two days later.
The family of Gae Baek-Hyun arrived at the funeral location where the service would take place. On the other hand, it was only Kim Ha-rin's grandmother who came. Her tears wouldn't stop. The atmosphere not only looked gloomy but felt gloomy, even for Min-young. Everywhere he looked there were no smiles. Kim Ha-rin's grandmother reminded Min-young of himself.
Nam-gil put his hand on Min-young's shoulder and said, "There's a saying in Chinese...The white-haired sending off the black-haired."
The news about Kim Ha-rin's death spread like wildfire. Chaos broke out on all online platforms. It even made it to the headlines of the newspaper. The entire story was covered by Kim Ji-Eun.
Later that day, at the police station everyone was pretty exhausted. Hwan said to Min-young, "When you were talking to Liam the other day, you were talking as if you were one hundred percent sure he was the murderer. Even though we didn't have any evidence."
"To be honest, I wasn't sure. But at times like those, you need to pretend you actually have evidence. Then, the other person becomes nervous. Eventually, he will spill the truth."
"Well, at least I can rest for some time," said Dae-jung.
"Who said that you could rest?" Min-young asked. "The real murderer is still out there."
"About that..." said Nam-gil. "We're...closing the case."
"WHAT! What do you mean you're closing the case?"
"It's the chief's orders."
