Kasumi: It definitely put a fresh spin on the idea. You really get a sense of what it would be like for a government to face a threat they had never seen before...and with their own government bureaucracy standing in the way.
A: And Godzilla evolving was a wonderful idea as well – it made it so that nobody was ever certain of what would come next.
K: You can really feel the anguish, too, as they contemplate whether their only option is using a nuclear weapon against him. The thought of another atomic bomb used on Japan, it’s...
A: It’s pretty horrible.
K: Yes.
A: And it’s all avoidable too.
K: I’m not sure I’m following you.
A: Well, most of the destruction in the movie could have been very easily prevented if the Japanese government had just done one thing.
K: Like what?
A: Give Godzilla a seat at the table.
K: Sorry, what?
A: He’s a Japanese monster, and the meetings are about him. So, Godzilla deserves a seat at the table. He should have been in those meetings too.
K: How would you get Godzilla into a government meeting?
A: You invite him. How else would you do it?
K: He’s bigger than the buildings they’re holding the meetings in!
A: You can bring the meeting outside. All those government people need to get more fresh air anyway.
K: And what would they talk about with Godzilla?
A: Well, medical care to start with. Did you see how painful those evolutions looked? Give the poor kaiju some bandages, at least!
K: Right.
A: I’m telling you, if they had just invited Godzilla to a meeting, he wouldn’t have gotten annoyed and destroyed Tokyo. Seriously, the government in this movie is terrible at conflict resolution.
K: Okay then...
A: And think about the possibilities of actually getting Godzilla on the government’s side! They could open an entire new tourist industry, just to see him! And he’d be a massive boon to the medical field.
K: Well, I suppose for research it would be...wait, you’re talking about bandage manufacturing, aren’t you?
A: Finally, you’re being logical! Who needs more and bigger bandages than Godzilla?
K: And what about all the collateral damage he causes?
A: Terrible for the insurance companies, but great for the construction industry. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, kaiju are wonderful drivers of urban renewal.
K: I see.
A: He’s also be a tremendous asset in urban planning.
K: Seriously?
A: Absolutely! Who would be better at landscaping or demolition than Godzilla? Need a hill leveled or a building taken down, let him shoot it with his atomic breath!
K: And what about whatever is behind it, like say, a building?
A: Clearly you’d need to put a giant fire-proof lead cloth overtop of it. And there’s another place for economic growth – just think of how many people you could employ making giant atomic breath-proof building and landscape covers!
K: Why does the cloth need to be made of lead?
A: Radiation. The breath is atomic, after all.
K: I suppose that’s...logical.
A: And Japan could have had all of this if they had just invited Godzilla to a single meeting!
K: Moving on, who is your candidate for best girl?
A: Best girls. It’s the poor souls stuck on the tip of Godzilla’s tail at the end.
K: What, you mean those humanoid monster things?
A: You know how much Japan loves monster girls – if only they had been able to split off, they could have formed the best idol band!
K: So, wrapping up, we liked Shin Godzilla, and the Japanese government needs to hold more outdoor meetings...

NOTE: This series is now on hiatus as Aquila and Kasumi go on their new adventure.
Aquila is a former god of destruction with light blue hair, along with a penchant for military coats and popped collars, who waged a personal war against the world of her creator. Kasumi is her creator, who Aquila saved through a miracle and is now Aquila’s partner in all things. Now that Aquila has atoned for her actions, she and Kasumi are touring the story worlds with their friends...while taking a bit of time to watch some TV and movies.
Come join Aquila and Kasumi on the couch for a nice chill chat as they talk about the latest thing they’ve sat down and enjoyed.
WARNING: There will be spoilers.
New episodes every other Saturday.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: All of the media Aquila and Kasumi review here I consider to be good and worth watching. I do not like the current mean-spiritedness that pervades pop culture discourse, and as such I never want to use these characters to tear down or encourage hate watching a show. It’s meant to be good natured fun, and that’s all there is to it.
