Kasumi: “The Legend of Ruby Sunday” was a great episode!
Aquila: And that cliffhanger just oozed fear and dread. The Doctor’s terror as he discovered Sutekh is returning was just paralyzing.
K: I don’t know if we’ve ever seen him that afraid.
A: And Sutekh is a chilling villain. His voice just oozes malice.
K: There something implacable about him too. He doesn’t want power, or conquest – he just wants to bring death to the entire universe.
A: Pity he’s so incompetent.
K: Sorry?
A: Well, think about it, Kasumi. He’s got the most foolproof evil plan in history – he wants everything to die. Well, in the end everything dies, even the universe. All he has to do to succeed is wait.
K: I think Sutekh is trying to be more proactive than that. He wants to be the one who kills everything.
A: And that’s over-ambition leading to incompetence! Anything he does creates an opening for the Doctor to stop him. Just kicking back and doing nothing means he gets to see everything die.
K: I don’t think he lives quite that long.
A: He’s attached himself to a time machine. If he’s really that impatient, he can just travel to the end of the universe and gloat at it. But, he didn’t, did he? He played games with anagrams and harbingers. He’s just asking to be stuck in another time tunnel.
K: I’m pretty sure he’s wanting people to be afraid as he destroys them. That’s part of what makes him a villain.
A: And it’s why he will always fail. Sutekh suffers from a critical lack of the one thing that would allow his plan to always succeed.
K: And what’s that?
A: Laziness.
K: Right...moving on, what do you think of the setup to Sutekh’s return?
A: I think the world of Doctor Who is completely screwed. Particularly the poor.
K: Oh?
A: Well, think about it, Kasumi – what does S. Triad Technologies do to bring about Sutekh’s return? They give something away free to the world. What did the Master do to start his conquest of Earth? Give something away for free. What did Axos do? Give something away for free.
K: Well, yes – that gets things into the hands of the most people as quickly as possible.
A: But they’ve set a trend! Now, humanity knows that evil alien plots begin with free gifts. Just think of what this has done to actual charities!
K: I think most people would be able to tell the difference between a legitimate charity and an alien plot.
A: Would they? Think of how often they’ve been burned! And this is the universe of Doctor Who...everything is trying kill you. Dolls want to kill you, store mannequins want to kill you, statues want to kill you, ambulances want to kill you, even the shadows want to kill you! It’s a death universe! The most reasonable and logical response to charity in this place is, “I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be killed by aliens – please don’t eat me.”
K: You may be overthinking this.
A: All of which makes Sutekh’s lack of laziness even stupider – the universe of Doctor Who doesn’t need his help killing everything!
K: And, moving on, who’s your candidate for best girl?
A: The Vlinx.
K: What, that robot alien thing?
A: It looks good in that shiny new upgrade!
K: To, to finish up, we liked “The Legend of Ruby Sunday,” and apparently charities need to add a disclaimer that they aren’t aliens and won’t eat people...
A: No point – everybody’s been burned too many times to believe it.

NOTE: This series is now on hiatus as Aquila and Kasumi go on their new adventure.
Aquila is a former god of destruction with light blue hair, along with a penchant for military coats and popped collars, who waged a personal war against the world of her creator. Kasumi is her creator, who Aquila saved through a miracle and is now Aquila’s partner in all things. Now that Aquila has atoned for her actions, she and Kasumi are touring the story worlds with their friends...while taking a bit of time to watch some TV and movies.
Come join Aquila and Kasumi on the couch for a nice chill chat as they talk about the latest thing they’ve sat down and enjoyed.
WARNING: There will be spoilers.
New episodes every other Saturday.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: All of the media Aquila and Kasumi review here I consider to be good and worth watching. I do not like the current mean-spiritedness that pervades pop culture discourse, and as such I never want to use these characters to tear down or encourage hate watching a show. It’s meant to be good natured fun, and that’s all there is to it.
