Rock bottom, rock bottom, rock bottom
I'm going back to my roots
To know which road to take (woah, woah, woah)
Trouble found me (woah)
All I look forward
Washed away by a wave..."
"Jemma... He's a master manipulator. He's a fake, a traitor and a murderer. You can't believe anything he says. You should know better! You actually went undercover in Hydra! You know how evil they are!"
I can't believe what I'm hearing right now. Daisy is accusing him of all the things she always does, but now I see it for what it is. To her, he's a monster for lying to us, to her, for going undercover. A bitter laugh escapes my lungs as it finally hits me just what naïve fools we've all been. I stand to my feet in seconds as the sheer ridiculousness of it all slams into my chest.
"Am I a monster Daisy?"
My best friend looks at me in shock before she stumbles over her words to reassure me that of course not Jemma! I smile softly at the young woman I used to be so close to, the woman I once considered my sister.
"You're right. I did go undercover into Hydra. Do you know what I found? Not monsters wearing the faces of humans, but honest-to-God normal people. People that worried about bills, how the hell their daughters were going to get into college because it's bloody expensive, and their senile grandmother that insists on cooking dinner every thanksgiving. Yes, there are evil people there, of course, but most of them are just normal people with husbands and wives and children. Jared Petiki is a biologist specializing in foreign anatomy, his wife just gave birth to their first child and he's terrified. Mary Conrad is a biochemical engineer and a single mom of three little boys, trying to make enough money to get them out of the bad side of town. Dani Prius is a specialist, honorably discharged from the Marines after a bomb blew off her right leg and killed her whole team, all she wants is to belong and Hydra gave her that. Whitehall's second in command, Harris Caldwell, found an orphaned fifteen year old Sunil Bakshi getting abused in an alley and saved his life, raising him as his own."
Daisy simply stared at me in disbelief before scoffing and shaking her head like there's something wrong with me.
"That doesn't give them the right to hurt people!"
I nod my head in agreement as I watch her short brown hair bounce while she paces like an angry lioness with too much pent up energy to stand still.
"No. That's not why you think he's a monster though, is it? That's not why you hate him. You feel betrayed and lied to because you were part of his mission. It's ironic really. The same people I told you about just now, I pretended to be on their side, they've told me secrets, they trusted me and I betrayed them because S.H.I.E.L.D. and Coulson told me to."
Daisy shakes her head and steps away from me with unshed tears and disgust shining in her dark eyes.
"I don't know who you are anymore. I always knew you were in love with him, but I didn't think you'd trade your morals for my sloppy seconds."
My face flushes in anger and hurt. I know she's upset, but that was too far.
"Before you judge me for forsaking my morals for a man you deem a monster, ask yourself, why was it so easy for me to forgive him?"
