“Attention Candidates!” Principal Howler called out. Everyone looked up at him excitedly as he floated around. “Aaaaaaaaand… the Entrance Exam begins NOW!” On that final word, the timers started counting down from thirty minutes, the gates swung open, and the teens rushed through.
“Yeah!” Dorian cheered as he ran into the urban streets of the Training Field.
“Let’s get this!” yelled Emmett, right next to him.
“Just don’t get in my way!” Selena added with a smirk as she sped past them overhead, her wings flapping as she flew.
The bulbs of the corrupted flowers opened like mouths and began spitting out globs of black goo repeatedly. When the globs hit the ground, they began bubbling and growing rapidly, rising up into creatures and bugs the size of cars. They moved and reacted as if they were alive, but looked like giant toys made out of black plastic.
Within seconds, there were hundreds of them spreading out over the Training Field. The Candidates clashed with the monsters and the air exploded with the sounds of magical attacks flying back and forth, stone cracking, glass shattering, and excited battle cries.
“That one’s mine!” Selena called out and pointed to a massive scorpion. She soared high into the sky and then dove down head first. At the last second, she flipped around to stomp on the bug with her feet, shattering it completely. The black pieces crumbled away and evaporated in a dark mist. She then turned as another scorpion came up behind her and blasted it apart with a beam of violet energy from her palm.
Dorian just stared in awe as she flew off towards another monster. Yup, she’s gonna be my wife one day… he thought to himself.
“Dude! Watch out!” Emmett yelled as he shoved Dorian out of the way of a charging boar. Emmett then turned and flung a few pink energy balls from his hands, destroying the creature. “Until you can use magic, you have to be more careful!”
“So, the son of Hikari Miyazoko can’t even use magic?” came a mocking voice from above them. They looked up to see a boy hovering there with his arms crossed, white feathered wings coming out of his back, flapping slowly. He had long black hair pulled into a braided ponytail, dark eyes, and light brown skin. He wore a string of fangs around his neck, each one carved with Native American symbols.
“How do you know who he is?” Emmett inquired.
“Because I saw him with his father and uncle earlier,” he revealed. “I’ve seen them with the Luminary in old news videos online and put two and two together. ”
“Yeah well, my Fae Sense will kick in any minute now!” Dorian replied with a smirk.
“Wait, so you don’t even have a Fae Sense yet?” the winged boy asked incredulously. He scoffed. “What an idiot! Get out of here before you get hurt!”
“What’s your name?” Dorian asked calmly.
“What?” The boy was caught off guard by the question.
“What’s your name?” Dorian repeated. “I want to know the name of the person who will be apologizing to me once I show how great my dormant power is!”
He scoffed again and shook his head. “The name’s Stormhawk.”
“Dorian Vex.”
“And I’m Emmett Haldeman.”
Stormhawk turned to Emmett. “I know you are pretty strong because I can sense a lot of Mana within you. But you need to convince your friend to leave, okay? He is in way over his head.” The winged boy then flew off towards a monster and fired white lightning bolts from his hands.
“Um, dude…” Emmett began hesitantly.
“Don’t say it, man…” Dorian replied, annoyed.
“It’s just… maaaaybe…” Emmett continued slowly.
“Listen, the thing is - whoa!” Dorian was cut off as he felt a long string of black webbing wrap around his body and pull him up into the air. He looked up in horror as he saw a giant spider perched on the side of a building near where they had been standing. The bug was pulling him in rapidly.
“Dorian!” Emmett cried out and pushed off the ground, flying into the air with a trail of pink energy behind him. The elf reached out a hand for his friend and then collided mid-air with a gorilla who had leapt from the next building over and tackled him back to the ground.
“Oh no!” Dorian cried out. He thrashed around frantically, trying to get out of the webbing as he was pulled closer and closer to the spider’s open mouth and sharp fangs. “Come on, Fae Sense! Kick in now! NOW! … Aw crap!”
