Emmett was the first person Dorian was looking for as he ran through the streets. He found the elf boy backed up against a building with a pink energy shield around him as he was blocking the slashes from a werewolf creature.
“Emmett!” Dorian yelled out, then started grabbing rocks from the nearby park and chucking them at the monster. “Get away from him!”
When the werewolf turned around to growl at Dorian, Emmett used the opening to shift his shield into a pink energy spear and shoved it through the monster’s back. It shrieked out as it was impaled and then dropped to the ground, turning back into black plastic and then crumbling away.
“I was scared to use lethal force at first because they look so real now,” Emmett said as Dorian ran up and gave him a hug. “But I guess they’re still just as artificial. They’re much stronger now though.”
“That person seems to be controlling all this,” Dorian said, pointing to the cloaked figure floating up at the center of the dome. “I still don’t have magic, but I figure I can at least help injured people get to the Healing Circles.”
“Stormhawk flew by me and said he took you back to the Starting Zone. I was gonna come and talk to you before all hell broke loose.” the elf explained.
“He was right,” Dorian admitted. “I was a fool. But I’ll have plenty of time to sulk later - right now, I just want to help however I can.”
“Maybe we can - whoa!” Emmett started, then yelped out as the sky erupted with the sound of intense, repeated thunder claps. He and Dorian snapped their heads up and stared in awe as they saw Stormhawk rocketing towards the cloaked figure, summoning a severe thunderstorm around him.
“He’s so cool!” Dorian said as they watched the winged boy begin circling the cloaked figure rapidly, turning the storm into a lightning-infused tornado around the figure.
“Get this off me!” he screamed out, igniting an aura of red energy around himself that blasted the tornado away and pushed Stormhawk back. The force also caused his hood to fall back, revealing a teenage elf boy with pale skin, long silver hair, and scarlet irises.
Once the figure’s identity was revealed, several of the faculty flew up right above where he was under the dome, trying to get his attention. Dorian and Emmett couldn’t hear what they were saying because of the barrier and that the two of them were down on the ground, but apparently Stormhawk heard everything and began screaming at him.
“Is that true?! You’re really doing all this just to get back at the school for expelling you last year! It’s your own fault for screwing around with forbidden arts! Pathetic! Just stop this and - UGH!” The winged boy’s barrating was cut short as the silver-haired elf summoned a massive hard-light fist of crimson energy to punch Stormhawk from above, sending him propelling towards the ground rapidly.
“Emmett, catch him!” Dorian cried out when he realized the blow had knocked Stormhawk unconscious. But then he heard his friend yelp and realized Emmett was preoccupied with another monster. “Crap! If he hits the ground like that, he’s gonna die! Crap! Crap! Crap!”
Not knowing what else to do, Dorian ran into the park, looking up as he tried to position himself under where Stormhawk would land, hoping maybe he could catch him or break his fall. Suddenly, becoming a Pro Battlemage didn’t matter at all anymore. In that moment, Dorian’s ego vanished - he was instead overcome with an intense need to save the winged boy from certain death.
And then, he felt a warmth growing inside himself, deep in his core. Time seemed to slow to a crawl as he inhaled deeply, his physical senses suddenly on fire. Sight, sound, smell, taste, touch - they all seemed remarkably sharper, more precise. He could hear the other Candidates fighting the monsters all over the Training Field with astonishing clarity. He could also feel the flow of Mana around him and the Moonweave up above like a sixth sense, and it gave him goosebumps and made the hair on the back of his neck stand up.
Oh wow… he thought to himself. This must be my Fae Sense… Not understanding how to control the Mana yet but knowing he had to save Stormhawk, Dorian just focused on that need and jumped up off the ground with every fiber of his being…
