As I open the door after swiping the card, Mia enters the room first, I follow her behind. She didn't say a word to me until now which made me a little uncomfortable because I had no idea how am I supposed to act around her anymore. It has been years since we talked last.
I let out a sigh and close the door behind. I wait for her to say something that's when I notice her legs are shaking but she's standing still.
"Are you okay?" I ask casually without thinking much as I walk toward her.
"Yeah, I am fine." She says, sighing deeply. I shake my head in frustration and say while pointing at her legs, "But your legs are shaking. Do you need help?"
She looks at her legs and starts to bite her lips, a habit of her which she does whenever she's overthinking something. She thinks for a few more seconds before nodding her head.
I take her hand in mine and help her walk toward the couch. I make her sit on the couch and bring her a glass of water. While she drinks the water, I take off her shoes and starts to message her feet. I rub her feet up and down while pressing the pressure points.
Mia always shakes her legs when she's anxious or afraid, the foot message doesn't help with her anxiety problems or anything. But it takes off her mind from the problems.
"You haven't changed at all," I hear the same affectionate voice of Mia which I used to hear years ago. My heart start to race, the emotion which are buried deep inside my heart starts to resurface.
I look at her, there is a small smile on her face. I don't know what to say anymore. I feel like I will lose to her either way. After all, I was the one who was and is still in love with her.
People often say, 'out of sight, out of mind'. But ten years, even ten years wasn't enough to lose the affection I had for her. Mia always has been a huge part of my life and it never changed in those years.
From the day we met to this day, it's always been her. Even if she is longer mine.
"But you have changed, you longer look like Mia I knew." I whisper in a low voice. Her smiles disappear hearing my words.
"Well, I needed to change," she lets out sad sigh, "in order to survive." She puts the glass on the table and says, "I don't know if you'll believe me if I say that there wasn't a day when I didn't regret thinking about decision I made back then."
I don't know how am I supposed to react hearing her words or what am I supposed to say. In all honesty, back then, I didn't want her to leave us and go with her mother. Yet I supported her because I knew she took that decision for her father. She needed money and her mother was the only one who could've help her out at that time. So even if I wanted to help, there was nothing I could do for her at that time. That's why I thought it'd be better if she leaves with her mother so I supported her decision
However, I regretted my decision after she cut off all of our contacts and made no effort to reach out us, even though we tried to contact her so many times. At that time, I resented her a lot. I wanted her to regret and feel sorry for her actions. But hearing she did feel regret and sorry for her actions, I feel a bitter taste in my mouth. I press my lips and sigh in frustration.
"You did what was best for your father back then. You wanted to save your father so you did what you thought was right at that time. And we were young back then so don't regret about those things." I tell her as I help her to put on the shoes back in feet.
I take a look at her; her eyes are staring at me with such sadness that I starts to feel bad for her. I don't know what happened to her in those days, I did hear about her mother when we moved here but I couldn't find any information about her. There are a few rumors I heard about her new family while working here but I could never confirm whether it's true or not.
"You're still same as ever." She chuckles, "How could you not hate me? You should at least pretend-"
"Why would I pretend? Do I have a reason to hate you?" I ask her firmly; I may sound a little angry because I am angry. I don't understand why she is asking all those questions.
Whether I hate her or not, it doesn't matter. Hating her wouldn't change our relationship or circumstance. It has been long time since I stopped resenting her. Because I was the only one who felt miserable by doing that.
"Yes, you have. If I were in your shoes then I would've hated myself too." She says; her voice cracks as if she's trying to stop herself from crying out loud.
I snort, "Then it's on you. You are you and I am me. We are completely different people, Mia. You can hate me as much as you want but I can't do that you. Hating you probably is going to hurt me most than you. After all, I was the one who loved more than you ever loved me."
Mia looks flabbergasted with my sudden outburst. Even I am surprised myself, I thought I could hold it in me but I failed miserably. All the feelings I have bottled up until now; starts to burst out.
I take a deep breath and try to calm myself. Sighing, I get up from floor and say, "You don't have to apologize to me. I never blamed you for anything. Maybe, we were never meant to be together."
I can see the look of hurt in her eyes, it pains me seeing her hurt too. But there is no reason for me to console her. We are nothing more than strangers now.
"Then can I ask you something for the last time?" She says quickly masking her emotions. The sound of her voice is also changed, it's like I am talking to a completely different person now.
"I don't think there is anything that I can do for you." I reply, leaving no room for discussion.
"No, there is. There is something you can do for me. And only you can do it for me." She argues as she gets up from the couch.
I chuckle hearing her statement and asks, "And what that would be?"
