A slightly abridged version of the folktale for the sake of setting the overall mood.
In the folktale, the mother meets the tiger multiple times in the trip and gives a rice cake each time (I condensed it to just one prolonged encounter).
There are versions where (before sticking its hand through the door) the tiger covers its paw in powder to make it look pale like the mother's skin.
Lastly, there are more comedic details of how the tiger found the children in the tree (it saw their reflection in a well and started attacking the water) and how it tried to climb the tree (it asked them how they got up their and the brother said they used sesame oil, so the tiger tried it and kept slipping...at which point the sister laughed and said it could just use an axe to get them, which allows the tiger to climb)
Jang Gunwoo, heir apparent to the crime syndicate Grand Sol, is killed.
Jang Sunwoo swears to avenge the death of his older brother, and in doing so takes Gunwoo's place (quite literally) by entering a strange contract with the family's patron demon.
