Chapter 6-Wynona

Chapter 6-Wynona

May 02, 2025

They were both quiet for a while, thinking of the next line. Ferris had a few suggestions but they never fit quite right. Wynona was beginning to regret choosing the song when she had an idea. "Hey what about, 'As new as dawn the wind will slow. When we kiss underneath the moon?'"

Ferris thought about it for a while. Humming the song to himself with the new line. Suddenly, he dug through his bag, and took out a pencil. He jotted down the two lines in his notebook.

“How’d you come up with that?” He asked. "It's taken me months just to get to the third line."

Wynona shrugged her shoulders. "I guess I got lucky, huh?"

Ferris sang the song quietly. His voice was mesmerizing. Wynona wished she could listen to him sing all day. As Ferris came to a stop, Wynona hesitated before saying, "You know, you're going to be amazing when we perform this. People are going to love your voice."

Ferris laughed awkwardly. "No, I-I don't know about that."

"I'm serious, Ferris," Wynona grabbed his shoulder. "Everyone is going to love your singing."

Ferris shook his head. "N-No, I don't plan on singing."

"What? Why? Did something happen?" Wynona asked.

He shook his head and explained, “I’ve, uh, got a major case of–of stage fright. I can barely do presentations, you know?” Wynona thought about it and he was right. From what she could recall, Ferris was always too quiet to hear whenever he spoke in front of the class, and if anyone were lucky to hear him he stuttered.

Wynona gave him a reassuring smile and squeezed his shoulder. "We'll figure something out, just don't bail on me yet, okay?" While she did not exactly have a plan, she needed him if she wanted to pass this class. She would never tell him that of course.

Ferris seemed hesitant, but he nodded. "Alright." He quickly changed the subject, “Got any other ideas? Let’s do the chorus.” Ferris suggested looking through his computer and notebook simultaneously.

Wynona was slightly disappointed. It felt like she and Ferris were finally having a real conversation that did not feel forced. It was too bad it ended so quickly, but she was not going to push it. Wynona tried to think of something, but Ferris beat her to it.

"I've got one!" Ferris grabbed his pencil and started writing it down. Then he sang it out loud, "I will always follow you. I’ll sing our song whenever you’re blue."

"That's really good." Wynona was still getting used to hearing him sing. Ferris just never looked like the type to sing, let alone write songs. But his voice was absolutely magical. It was smooth, not too high to make his voice crack and not too low to sound disturbing.

Ferris nodded, oblivious to her awe. "How about I go home and record this and send it to you? Then you can work on the music part."

Wynona nodded back, disappointed their hangout was ending so early. "Sure. Tuesday, right?"

"Yeah Tuesday. Let's meet at the park, okay? I'll bring food." Ferris grinned and started packing up his stuff.

Wynona slowly nodded her head and put her iPad away in her bag.

They were about to exit when they heard a thunderous clap outside. They looked outside and saw rain pouring heavily against the pavement. Each drop made a loud slapping noise. Wynona felt around her shorts and realized she forgot her umbrella. She turned to Ferris and saw him holding a black umbrella.

He looked at Wynona and asked, “Didn’t you bring your umbrella? You were the one who said it might rain.” He teased.

Embarrassed, Wynona turned away. She could not tell him that she forgot it because she was excited to see him. "It must've slipped my mind."

He nodded his head and opened the door. “We can use mine, Wynona.” He pushed a square button on his umbrella and it opened. He motioned for Wynona to step out and she did. She stood under his umbrella and Ferris stood next to her holding the umbrella.

She looked up at him, awkwardly. "You know, you can just call me, Wyn. Most people do."

Ferris nodded his head. “Okay, Wyn, guess I’m taking you home again?” Ferris joked. Wynona chuckled and shrugged her shoulders. He led the way and Wynona did her best to keep up with him. Although this was something big to Wynona she knew it was different for Ferris. This was probably just another walk to him.

“You good?” Ferris poked Wynona's shoulder a few times, pulling her away from her thoughts.

Wynona looked up at him and nodded. “You do this for a lot of people, huh? I mean walking them home.” She tried to sound as if she were teasing him, but it came out like she was jealous or nervous.

Ferris did not seem to suspect anything and shook his head. “Maybe only Cole and Aimee sometimes, but usually they’re the ones coming to my place.” He explained and spun the umbrella in his hands.

“Aren’t you cold?” He asked, pointing at her shorts.

Wynona was, but she knew that was her fault for not planning ahead. She nodded her head then shrugged. “It’s no biggie,” She assured.

Ferris frowned and looked away.

Wynona wanted to change the subject. But to what? She wanted to get to know Ferris but without making it weird, and she had no idea how to do that. Wynona hardly had a hard time talking to people, but Ferris was more awkward than she expected. He seemed to open up only when it was about his song.

“If you could have one wish, what would it be?” She spoke without thinking, but figured the question was not too personal. Besides Ferris would probably say something dumb anyways.

He was quiet for a moment, pondering as if she had asked him a life and death question. Finally, he muttered, “It’s personal." He stared off into the distance, his mind clearly wandering elsewhere. Slowly he shook his head and turned back to her. "What about you? What would you wish for?"

She frowned. It was not that she did not want to share, it was just not the most positive conversation starter. “It’s complicated,” Wynona muttered, awkwardly. So much for not getting personal… She looked down at the soaked pavement. They were both silent for a while, but it did not bother Wynona that much.

Finally, Ferris broke the silence and said, "You know you give a lot of vague answers."

Wynona laughed and turned to him. "Tell you what, I'll be a little less vague after we get to know each other."

"Sounds like a deal to me." Ferris smiled smugly.

Wynona could barely contain her happiness. This meant Ferris genuinely wanted to be friends. There was no trick. She hoped friendship could become something more, but she also knew she would be just as happy being his friend.

A few weeks had passed and Wynona and Ferris worked on the song on and off. They struggled mostly with figuring out the chorus, but they had made progress. So far they had:

As new as dawn the water shimmers

It glows for you and my love

As new as dawn the clouds will part

The sun will shine on our intertwined hands

As new as dawn the wind will slow

When we kiss underneath the moon

I will always follow you

I’ll sing our song whenever you’re blue

I promise you won’t lose me

Wynona could tell, Ferris was very satisfied with their slow progress. Sometimes they spent lunch together to work on the song, but Wynona still preferred to eat with Elijah, and she could tell Ferris preferred to be with his friends.

There were a few times he walked with Wynona and June home. Although, those were the times that Wynona felt like a third wheel. It felt like Ferris spent most of his time trying to talk to June rather than Wynona when the three of them were together. June, being her usual self, often showed little to no interest in whatever Ferris mentioned to her. Wynona tried not to think much of it. After all, it would be a good thing for Ferris and June to get along if they were going to be friends.

Outside of school, things were fine, but on campus, it still made Wynona uncomfortable being Ferris's friend all of a sudden. Although Ferris had claimed to be bad at making friends, he talked to a lot of people around campus. As a result, a lot of those people started talking to Wynona as well. Usually, when large crowds would form Ferris or Cole would pull Wynona out of it. There were only a few of Ferris's friends Wynona did not mind being around, which were Cole and Aimee.

Wynona had a class with both Aimee and Cole. Cole was not one to pay attention during class, but his company was nice. It was very easy to talk to Cole compared to Ferris, but they were two completely different people. Cole was not as awkward as Ferris tended to be. Aimee, on the other hand, was very quiet, but smart. She helped Wynona with some of the work they had, but she never had much to say other than that. The only time she seemed to speak more was around Cole and Ferris, but Wynona did not take offense to it.

Wynona was sitting at one of the benches with June across from her. They were both on their phones, but Wynona could tell there was something on her mind. She was tapping her foot a lot, something she did when she was nervous or worried about something.

After waiting a while for her to fess up, Wynona put her phone down. "What's wrong?"

She looked up from her phone. "No, it's nothing. I don't want to worry you either."

"Come on," She put her phone in her pocket. "Just tell me."

June seemed reluctant, but she finally budged. "It's just, isn't it kind of weird that Ferris wants to talk to you all of a sudden?"

Wynona looked down at her hands on the table. "I mean, it weirded me out more in the beginning than it does now."

"Oh," She looked back down at her phone. "I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking it."

"Maybe." Wynona smiled smally. She quickly changed the subject to cheer her up. "Have you gotten any projects?"

She shook her head. "No, all my classes have been really boring. I hardly have any classes with Ashley either so it's a lot worse." Ashley was June's friend. Wynona got along with her, but there was a reason she never spent lunch with June. She was…a bit much.

June kept going, her eyes still on her phone. "I'm probably going to spend the night at Ashley's tonight. Come back Sunday."

"Do Andrea and Jonathan know?" Wynona asked.

"I mentioned it to them, but they said they'd let me know today." She glanced up at him. "Do you have plans this weekend?"

Wynona shook her head. "None that I know of."

June snickered. "I have a social life and you don't."

"Haha." She rolled her eyes. "Very funny, June." As she sat up in her seat she saw Ferris entering the campus and walking toward them.

June must have noticed as well because she began to get up.

Wynona turned to her. "Where are you going?"

"I'm not in the mood to talk to the chatterbox over there." She waved and quickly left before Ferris arrived.

Ferris stopped at the table and watched June leave. "Where's she going?"

"Um," Wynona looked up at Ferris. "She's got a project to work on."

"Oh, I see." He sat down on the seat beside Wynona. "So when should we meet up again? We've been ignoring it all week."

Wynona chuckled. "How about tomorrow? I don't have any plans."

Ferris frowned. "No, not tomorrow. It's my grandmother's birthday."

"Oh, then maybe–"

"Oh wait!" Ferris cut her off. "You could just celebrate with us. I mean we're just going to go out to eat and then go home. There should be plenty of time to focus on the song after."

Wynona was a little surprised. "You want me to meet your grandmother?"

He laughed dryly. "More like she wants to meet you. Is that okay? You don't have to go."

"No, it's fine." Wynona smiled smally. "I just need to know how long I'd be staying so I can let my parents know."

"Oh," Ferris thought for a moment. "I mean if it's easier you could just spend the night and leave the next day."

Wynona was speechless for a moment. "Spend the night?"

Ferris shrugged his shoulders. "Yeah, why not? That way you don't have to worry about walking home so late."

"R-Right." Wynona looked down at her hands. "I'll talk to my parents about it, but I'm sure it's fine."

"Cool." Ferris took a glimpse at his phone. "I should get going to class. I'll see you later." He waved and left.

Wynona waved back and sat there quietly for a while. Her mind was still trying to wrap itself around the plans she had just agreed to. She was spending the night…at Ferris' house…the entire night… Her face began to flush with embarrassment and she covered her face with her hands. It was hard to believe, but it was real. Wynona quickly texted Andrea, hoping she would not ruin this for her. She did not answer right away, but when she did, she agreed to her spending the night. It was actually happening…Wynona would spend the night at Ferris's house the next day. And here she was thinking their hangout at the diner was exciting.
