Imogen and her classmates listen to the dancing teacher explain their new dance.
“Alright kids, please select a partner of the opposite gender” the teacher asks. Everyone picks who they want to be with immediately. Jonathan knows that he'll end up without a partner as always, so he walks over to the teacher. “I don’t have a dance partner ma’am” he says “oh? That’s okay, let’s see if there’s anyone else available” she responded. She takes his hand and brings him to the front of the class “okay everyone, we have a little problem, would anyone like to be Jonathans' dancing partner?” she asks. The students stare at each other weirdly, Imogen almost immediately raised her hand up high, “I’ll do it!” she yelled.
The music starts and everyone grabs hold of each other, they’re practicing slow dancing. Imogen stares at Jonathan, his cold empty eyes sadden her, “why don’t you smile more? I bet you’d look way better!” she says, with a small giggle. He doesn’t say anything and just stares at her. “Don’t bother talking to him Imogen he’s mute!” Natalie shouts across the room. Henry chuckles “Yeah I bet he’s a witch under disguise!” everyone in the room laughs.
Imogen gets angry and stops dancing with Jonathan. She takes his hand and yells “he’s not mute, I heard him talk! He’s not a witch either, you look more like a witch with that messy hair!”. Everyone's laughter suddenly gets louder, Henry turns away embarrassed and Jonathan stares at Imogen surprised.
Imogen sits on a bench in front of the school outside, waiting for her dad to pick her up. She stares at her shoes and watches as a shadow approach her, she looks up and to her surprise it’s Jonathan. “Hey, Imogen right?” Jonathan says, Imogen smiles warmly at him and nods her head. “Can you stop?” he said, coldly. Imogen tilts her head “stop what?” she asks “don’t act dumb, stop defending me! I don’t know what you’re trying to do but quit acting like you care!” he shouts. Imogen fiddled with her fingers “sorry...I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable, you just seem like a really nice person...” she said with a soft smile. Jonathan pauses, he blushed slightly "wh-what are you saying? I haven't been nice to you at all! ... you know what? do whatever you want!" he stomps away.
Despite what he said, Imogen kept defending him. During lunch, in class, and while doing PE. Jonathan was stubborn at first, but he saw the way she'd smile at him even when he was a jerk. He quickly realized that she was being sincere, and he began to open up to her.
Imogen rests her head down on her desk, 'I’m so bored…' she thought to herself. Suddenly, she feels someone tap her shoulder, she turns her head to see who it is and it's Jonathan. He’s standing behind her, smiling. “See? I told you you’d look better if you smiled!” Imogen said, smiling back at him. “Th-thank you” … “do you need something?” Imogen asks, Jonathan gets flustered and nervously pulls something out of his pockets. Candy, the kind Imogen isn’t allowed to eat, Jonathan hands them over to Imogen.
“Yeah um…I wanted to give you these for helping me the other day…” Jonathan mumbled shyly, Imogen excitedly takes the candy away from him and gasps. “Wow really? Thank you very much!” she said, her smile beaming at him, “y-you’re welcome…”. She looks at the candy 'this is a good opportunity to ask!' She turns to him, her eyes shined brightly. “Hey, you don’t have many friends do you?” Imogen asks Jonathan, it takes him by surprise 'more like any at all…' he thought to himself. He shakes his head “no, not really…” he grumbled.
Imogen grins, “then, let’s be friends!”
