Jim, Veronica, Connor, and Lydia all shot their hands in the air briefly, but quickly. In all the excitement, terror, and mystery, none of them even realized how thirsty they had been, or hungry for that matter. The mere mention of quenching their thirst made their stomachs grumble. They were all eyeing Simon as some sort of hero for even mentioning it.
"There's nothing here, we checked. This whole room is basically empty." insisted Connor.
Simon looked at him proudly, heroically and walked over to a wall.
"You really remember nothing from the training manuals?" Simon sounded humorously disappointed. "Never-the-less, your memories should all come back in time." Simon was standing at what appeared to be just a blank wall. Simon did a motion with his hand. Nothing happened. He glanced back at everyone briefly. He repeated the same hand pattern on the wall. Nothing. He looked up at the lights along the walls, he was confused. His expression quickly went from confusion to a eureka moment. "The power hasn't been turned on yet, has it?"
"You tell us, the lights are on aren't they?" Lydia was getting slightly annoyed with him."
"Right, sorry, amnesia." Simon walked briskly to the center pedestal. Jim watched him curiously.
"We already tried that, the button doesn't work." Jim stated informatively.
Simon glanced at Jim excitedly. "No memory means you don't remember how to press the button." Jim stared at him dumbfounded, his eyes following Simon as he approached the pedestal. At that point, everyone was staring at Simon with genuine curiosity. Simon touched the fingerprint on the side and the dome retracted as it did for Jim. Simon then pressed the button in some kind of rhythmic code. The pedestal began to glow green. Various lines almost like veins began to light up protruding from the base of the pedestal, travelling towards every space on the circular walls. Screens of all kinds began to appear behind panels that were so precisely measured, they appeared as nothing until they moved. Jim wasn't even sure what most of the screens were. Numbers, graphs, coordinates, it was all so much to take in. The largest screen appeared above the ornate door. A title flashed on the top of the screen. Mission control. "Everyone..." Simon began. "If you'll all take a circle and stand in it."
Everyone found the nearest circle, Veronica made a point to stand on the circle next to Jim on his right. Lydia was standing opposite of Jim and Connor stood to Jim's right. Simon was the last to take a circle, he stood on the last one to the right of Veronica.
The circles under their feet began to glow green. the floor behind them opened into a tiny circular hole. A flag pole type object appeared, and circled each of them, a blue light appeared and formed the contours of their body.
"No worries, it's just scanning you." Simon was acting almost as narrator.
After a single revolution of the scanner around them, the flag pole disappeared back into the hole. Above them, through the vent, they all heard some kind of sound. From the vent came crawling in a cloud of tiny objects, so tiny it was as if it was a dust cloud. First the cloud surrounded Simon. Next was Veronica, the cloud continued in a counter-clockwise formation.
Jim was surrounded by the cloud. The tiny objects were moving incredibly close to his body, they began latching on and connecting to each other. From his feet up to his head, he could see all of these tiny particles attaching themselves to him. He could feel his body being covered from bottom to top. His feet, his legs, his waist, chest, arms. The last of these particles dropped from his head and face and finished off at what would become a collar. His field of vision came back and everyone now had some kind of suit on that they were now wearing.
The suits were mostly white and black with a single colored stripe wrapping diagonally around the bodies twice with a black border. Veronica had a Purple stripe, Lydia's was red, Connor's was Blue, Simon's was orange, and Jim's was green.
The sound of the particles stopped in an instant.
"What the hell was that?!" Connor sounded more confused and shocked than angry.
Simon again, looking impressed with himself, spoke again.
"Nano-suits. I invented them myself." Simon seemed very content. "Everything you see around you, is my creation." Simon took a step forward. "Built it from the ground up."
Everyone was ironically more confused and left with more questions after receiving that answer.
"I almost forgot." Simon walked back over to the wall he had been at before and did that same hand movement on the wall. a new screen appeared and he began typing on an on-screen keyboard. to the left and right of the screen slid open to reveal a compartment. The sliding trays revealed themselves with what appeared to be cups of water.
Everyone walked briskly over to the cups and took one. They all gulped it down with every bit of satisfaction it had to offer.
"Electrolyte enhanced." Simon announced. "It's a bit thicker than normal water, but it will hydrate everyone, quite well.
Everyone was far too invested in their own drink. They barely even heard Simon. They all finished their beverage and placed the cups back on the trays. The trays retracted and disappeared behind the same panels as they too retracted.
"Now then, who would like their memories to start returning?"
Everyone looked at Simon with eagerness. Simon then typed something else into the computer screen and each circle on the ground opened in a circular format. a thicker flag pole protruded up began to form a shockingly comfortable looking revolving stool for everyone to sit on. Everyone taking notice of this went to the same circle they were standing on before. They all took a much needed seat and were amazed at just how comfortable the seats were. Simon took his own seat and took a deep breath.
"I'm sure you all must have a thousand questions." Simon began. Everybody scoffed at the statement. "While I don't think we have the time for me to explain everything, I'll give you the bullet points."
Jim looked over at Connor, who, in return, looked at him. Jim wasn't sure what Connor was thinking, but it had to be something similar to himself. Jim sure knew what he, himself, was thinking in that moment. Where are they, Why are they where they are, wherever "here" is. Why does everyone but this Simon character seem to be experiencing this crazy amnesia. Can he even be trusted? He knows so much and they all know so little, it's crazy.
Simon began to speak again.
"This room we're in..." Simon pointed around. "Is just one small part of a much bigger concept, an idea. My idea." He paused, as if absorbing his surroundings. A sudden feeling of pride seemed to overtake him briefly, causing a small smile. "It's called the 'Regenex'. We are in a state-of-the-art fallout/ survival shelter. It was invented by me to have all of the necessary survival tools at hand for whatever situation might arise." he folded his hands. "Again, this room is just one small room in a much larger design. That door over there..." he pointed toward the ornate door. "is currently vacuum sealed in place. Nothing a simple code can't deactivate. It will lead to the rest of this structure. Given your current memory loss, things out there may not be instantly recognizable, but, in time they will. Now that I've explained just a touch of where we are. Would you care to know why we're here?"
Everyone was at full attention, staring intently at Simon. Simon, acknowledging the attention, pointed up at the screen above the ornate door.
"I believe you'll have more answers after hearing the mission details." Simon seemed mildly concerned.
