REGENEX Part 1

CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5

May 19, 2025

All five of them entered into this new, exceptionally large room.  It must have been a hundred feet from top to bottom, probably more.  It was truly impossible to accurately gauge the size of the Regenex.  Not only was there this incredibly large room with multiple levels to it, there were other doorways on every level that went to their own unknown destinations.

"Welcome to the central hub of the Regenex." Simon began.  "You can access any part of the shelter from this location.  The ground floor is the command center for all exploratory and informational purposes.  All other floors above this go to other varying sections.  There is an entertainment floor, for quite literally all things entertainment wise thanks mostly to a Holo-deck inspired directly from the ever popular show Star Trek.  Another floor is dedicated to all things food and beverage related.  There is an entire eco-garden with completely renewable food growing. It utilizes a mostly self caring system for perpetual food.  It's quite advanced.  Also on this floor is a moisture accumulation system that in turn carbon filters and sterilizes, producing pure drinking water.  This same purification system also has a secondary purpose.  Any liquid waste produced, is purified, sterilized, and recycled for use as a bathing tool."

"Wait.  Hold on."  Connor interrupted.

Simon already knew what he was about to say.

"You're telling me..." Connor continued. "When we use the restroom... our urine gets recycled, and we're supposed to use that to bathe in?!"

"I assure you, it travels through a separate carbon filtration device than the moisture collection system, and removes all impurities.  It is most safe for bathing. Would you care to know what our auto-garden uses for fertilizer?"  Simon smiled deviously.

At the realization of the implication, everyone was a bit taken aback with shock.  However, as unconventional as it sounded, the logic sort of checked out.

"Not to worry, there's also another process your other waste goes through to remove impurities and prep it for optimal fertilizer purposes, so please, feel free to use your private facilities as often as need be.  Our fully stocked kitchen should assist in all dietary fiber needs." Simon paused as everyone still had a mildly shocked look.  "Which then brings us to the final floor.  Living quarters.  You'll find on the top floor, each of you have your own private residence.  Fully furnished, of course."

"I have a question." Lydia spoke up.

"Of, course." responding Simon.

"How is this whole thing powered?"

"An excellent question, I was about to get to that."

Lydia held her hands up in a semi-playful mock apology.

"This whole shelter relies on a few sources of renewable energy, simultaneously.  Solar, Wind, Hydro-electric, and if absolutely necessary, fertilizer.  Much in the same way a combustion engine utilizes gasoline, we can use human or other waste in a very similar way using new technology.  However, considering other elements are most consistent and useful, the fertilizer is a back-up.  If you'll be so kind now as to follow me over to the main computer, I need to show you something highly important."

The group accompanied Simon over to a computer located in the center of the ground floor.

"If you'll all be so kind as to look up at the wall in front of us." Simon instructed.

Everyone did so accordingly.  Simon pressed a button on the console and data appeared on a screen.  Varying bits of information and graphs appeared.  Simon pointed one on the top left of the screen.

"These are all measurements that are collected of the world outside, each measuring their own unique sample.  This one in particular is a big one.  As we have undergone a cataclysmic world-wide nuclear blast, you could imagine the radiation levels outside are at a very high level currently.  This graph shows where things currently stand.  The outside radiation is so high that no one here would last more than a single minute outside before their internal organs began to disintegrate.  Think, Chernobyl, only exponentially worse." Simon turned to everyone. "I mean it when I say, any exploration that is to take place will be done so only with specialized suits that are meant to prevent radio-active penetration.  We cannot afford to lose any one of you. Now there is more to go over to better understand your surroundings, however, I think we could all use a recharge after everything you've seen and heard so far.  Allow me to show you the living quarters."

No one complained at the thought of this, instead one by one, they began to trickle towards a staircase.

"What, no elevators?" Connor chimed in jokingly

"Unfortunately no, elevators require extra power that could be better utilized elsewhere, it was also determined that the exercise produced by using a set of stairs would be beneficial to everyone's overall health.  Some of you may find yourselves sitting at the main computer for periods of time and one should always remember their physical health needs are essential as well."

Feeling satisfied with the answer, Connor and everyone else began ascending the stairs.  Each floor was briefly introduced before the reached the top.  Simon pointed to each door.

"Each of these doors will lead to your own personal living quarters, your doors will only open with your specific fingerprint."

Simon guided each of them to their own doors. There were five.  Jim's was first, Veronica's was second, Lydia's was fourth, and Connor's was fifth.  Simon approached the center door.

"This one is mine." Simon approached the center.  "If anyone has any questions about their quarters, you can utilize the tablets on your living room walls to seek information through an AI system that will further explain anything you need to know.  As for me... I am very much looking forward to a very hot bath.  Wake up is 8am, and I can begin to show each of you various upkeep jobs, who knows, maybe after some rest, more of your memory will begin to return.  Anyway, get some rest, we'll see each other tomorrow."

With that closing statement, Simon used his own fingerprint scanner.  The door slid upward and he stepped through.  He pressed another button and the door slid back down, Simon disappearing from view.

Everyone looked at one another.

"I have so many questions." Connor was the first to break the silence.

"We all do." Chimed in Lydia.

Veronica turned to Jim

"Lydia's right.  There are more questions than answers at this point." Veronica seemed mildly concerned.

"You're all right. I think Simon is right though." Everyone looked at Jim curiously after speaking. "We've been through a lot.  Hell, I'm not even sure any of us really know what happened yet.  I mean sure.  We got the summarized version of outside events, and horrifying as they were, it occurs to me that we know nothing about what happened here, to us, i mean. I still don't know how I got to be where I was when I woke up.  Simon sort of implied that we were there for security reasons, but it was all very vague." Connor and Lydia both nodded at Jim. "All I know for sure is that I am exhausted, you must all be exhausted as well."  Everyone nodded.  "So I am going to see what's in my little room there, we all are.  If anything stands out as weird, I mean, weirder than we've already seen.  If anything stands out as dangerous, we are all going to meet back right here to better establish what we're going to do."  Jim had everyone's attention.

"Sounds good to me." Lydia started

"Yeah, I'm good with that." Connor followed

"It's a plan." Veronica finished.

"Good, then let's all head inside, get some rest, and we'll hopefully see each other tomorrow and not in five minutes."

Lydia hugged Connor. They both approached their doors.  They both pressed their fingers and emulated what Simon did.  They too disappeared behind their doors.

Veronica also hugged Jim now that they were alone.  This being the first time they had embraced, Jim felt a familiar sense of peace by this.  Veronica reached up and gave Jim a kiss on the cheek before smiling at him and going to her door. She went inside like everyone else.  Jim was left standing there.  He gently placed his hand on his cheek and smiled, all the while looking at the door Veronica once stood.  He then turned toward his own door and approached it.  He placed his finger on the pad and the door slid open.  There was another door inside creating a tiny chamber.  Extra security, he thought.  He stepped through the first door which then closed behind him.  There was nothing interesting or unique about this tiny space, just another door in front of him and another finger scanner.  He pressed it and the door slid open.  He entered his living quarters, and into the unknown.  A hot shower sounded very nice, and plenty of much needed rest.  Tomorrow he would get a better grasp of his own situation, and hopefully a better grasp of just what, in God's name, was happening, and what the future would hold for them all.
