REGENEX Part 1

CHAPTER 11

CHAPTER 11

May 20, 2025

Everyone left the food hall and began to make their way down the stairs.  Simon was giving a briefing about what to expect as they all went down.  They all met in front of the door.

"We must be extremely careful inside of here, please remember that.  We do have a sick bay, but please don't give yourself cause to visit it.  That would have been our next stop on the tour, but, majority rules."  Simon said, not sounding especially pleased, more defeated.  Placing his finger on the scanner, the first door opened.  They stepped inside.  Simon pointed to a meter above the next door.  "This meter measures the current state of contamination in the following room."

The meter above them had three color ranges with ten light bars for each color.  Jim looked up at it and saw it reading one bar into the red.

That can't be very good... he thought to himself.

"I don't see any numbers on that meter." exclaimed Connor.

"That's very true, the specific calculations are in the computer in the main hall.  This meter is just a quick reference of what the environmental conditions are, in there.  As you can see, it's not good.  This is why I suggested we give it until tomorrow.  I'm simply hoping that meter will at least be in the yellow." Simon looked at everyone with concern. "We can go in if you all want, however, it is my very strong recommendation that we wait until tomorrow.  This is life and death we're talking about here."

Simon had very clearly made his point.  Lydia looked slightly embarrassed after the scene at lunch.  Simon noticed this and was quick to respond.

"You don't need to feel any sort of way about this." Simon began. "I very much commend you for your bravery in speaking up about a democratic type system in place, and you're correct.  Majority should rule.  I only wish this hadn't been the first decision made by that rule."

Lydia was happy to hear this, it did, in fact, make her feel better about things.

"I would like to take another vote." Simon began.  "I vote that we monitor the conditions in this room from the safety of the main computer.  When the room has reached a certain level, at least to the green level, we will then utilize this room to test my suit."

Simon raised his hand.  He was the only one, everyone else simply nodded their heads.  This was enough for Simon.

"Thank you all for listening." Simon was relieved.

"How long do you think it could be before it's safe enough to enter?" Veronica asked.

"Again, it's really impossible to say, a day, a week, a month.  I really can't say." Simon responded.

Veronica nodded.

"Please, let's go back to the main hall, I don't even feel very comfortable standing, even here."

They all left the first room and went back to the main hall.  Without skipping a beat, Simon signaled them all over to the final door in the main hall.

"The final trip on our tour is behind this final door."

"Medical." Lydia blurted out.

"Yes." Simon acknowledged with a small nod.

Simon pressed his finger to the fingerpad and the door slid open.  All of them proceeded inside led by Lydia, who all but sprinted in the Medical room.  They all stood just inside the doorway.

This room was about the size of the food hall.  There were two patient benches in the center of the room with a very high tech adjustable machine above the center of them.  There seemed very little else in the room other than a device on a surface in the corner of the room.

Lydia approached the patient benches with haste, touching them gently with her hands.  She then looked up at the machine with wide eyes.  She looked back at everyone else and focused on Simon.

"I remember this room!" Lydia exclaimed excitedly.

"I thought you might..." Simon began  "This is your work space, your specialty.  Your reason for being aboard this shelter.  You're the doctor here."  Simon finished with a wide smile.

"I'm not sure that I remember what this machine up here does, but I remember it." Lydia continued.

Simon approached her and reached up to activate the machine using a button on the side.  The machine came to life.

The machine began to lower down.  After descending a couple of feet, mechanical arms began to expand.  A lid slid down on the side of the device to reveal a touch screen.

"Every medical tool or medicine you could ever need, all at the touch of a screen.  Please, search it." Simon encouraged Lydia.

Lydia began scrolling through the touch screen.  Eventually landing on something that caught her eye, she pressed the screen.  For a moment, nothing happened.  The device in the corner began to buzz and come to life.  Everyone's attention was now focused on the device.  Simon motioned Lydia toward the device.

Lydia walked over extremely curious.  This device was humming loudly.  She could feel an intense heat coming from it.  She also noticed a red glow around the frame of what must be the access panel.  The red glow faded and very quickly turned a deep blue.  There was now an intense chill emanating from it.  Then just as quickly, the device stopped with a ding.  Lydia stood there for a moment, unsure of how to proceed.

"It's safe to open now." Simon spoke from the center of the room.

Lydia turned back to look at him.

"Release the locks on the top of the access panel.  They'll reveal and handle to open the panel down toward you." Simon used hand motions to demonstrate.

Lydia did as instructed and the access panel opened for her.

From a distance, Jim, Connor, and Veronica watched as Lydia reached inside of the device.  She pulled something out and looked at it out of view of everyone.  Before too long, she turned to reveal a scalpel.  She looked at Simon for answers.  Her memory may have been jogged a great deal, but was clearly still experiencing gaps in her memory.

"It's the only three-dimensional printer of its kind.  Most printers that you're used to simply use a pliable acrylic mold.  This isn't much different, however, this takes it a step further with an even stronger, similar material, and then utilizes a blast of arctic air to temper.  Think of it as a modern forge."  Simon explained. "Look on the side of the printer."

Lydia looked on the side and found another separate compartment.

"When you're finished with any tool or tools you might have printed.  Insert them there and they will begin to recycle the forged material for future use."

Lydia looked back at Simon.

"...And you invented this as well?" Lydia asked candidly.

"No... the idea is entirely yours, I'm just the engineer in this case.  I made it work."

Lydia stood there, unsure what to think.  A modest sense of satisfaction crossed her face.  She looked at Simon, then turned to look at the rest of the crew.  Everyone was looking at her impressed, though not surprised.

"Let's hope that no one needs to use this room anytime soon." Veronica exclaimed.

"Indeed." Simon replied.  Simon looked down at his wrist again. Simon looked back up. "Who wants to eat?"

At this question, Connor was already making his way back to the door.  Lydia inserted the scalpel back in the printing device and made her way back to the door as well.  When everyone had made their way back to the main hall, Simon stopped everyone at the main computer.

"Almost forgot one other thing." Simon quickly said.  "Everyone, gather round."

The group gathered by the computer and Simon clicked through a few screens.  One of them was labeled Security Protocol.  Simon pressed his finger to a pad nearby.

"Now that everyone has seen most of the important rooms.  I believe it's time to renew security clearances for everyone.  One by one, scan your fingerprints."  Simon motioned to the computer.

One by one they updated their security clearances.

"Now that that is done, you no longer need me to access any room in the shelter, except of course my personal living quarters." Simon paused. "Oh yes, food!"

Simon returned the computer to the desktop.  The crew had already begun to make their way upstairs to the food hall.  Simon turned and took another glance up at the radiation levels outside and sighed.  Simon had a feeling it would be a while before anyone could venture outside.  At least we had to forethought to include a holo-deck entertainment area. He thought to himself before heading up to the food hall himself.

Everyone sat in the food hall, consuming their meals, talking about world events, talking about the shelter, going over things again. Everyone at this point had agreed that each person seemed to have their areas of expertise and all agreed to put primary focus on these rooms, respectively.  Simon once again assured them that rotation of jobs was absolutely fine, and very much encouraged.  He still believed that everyone on board should have ample knowledge of all things necessary for survival.

When everyone had finished with their food, everything was recycled like before.  The crew slowly made their way back to the top floor living quarters.  Once again, Simon was the first to enter after bidding everyone a pleasant night in that fun British accent of his.  Lydia and Connor held hands and were talking to each other quietly before there was a kiss on the cheek from Connor to Lydia.  They both went into their respective rooms.

Veronica and Jim stood there having witnessed the kiss and looked at each other.

"How cute." Veronica playfully stated.

"The cutest." Jim responded.  "Well almost."

Veronica began blushing.

"I'm not exactly tired yet." Jim said to her casually.  "Did you wanna come inside my place for a bit, maybe catch a movie or something, unwind a little before bed?"

Veronica was happy to receive the invite.

"Sure, that sounds like fun."  Veronica answered.

Veronica took Jim's hand and they approached his door.  Jim placed his finger on the scanner and they both went inside.
