REGENEX Part 1

CHAPTER 15

CHAPTER 15

May 20, 2025

Jim and Connor entered the power room.  Connor pointed to the other side of the machine and began walking.

"What did you need to show me?" Jim asked.

"Nothing.  I just needed to get you in here alone."  Connor admitted.  Connor couldn't help but notice the lack of surprise in Jim's face.  "You don't seem very surprised."

"You actually saved me the trouble of trying to angle this particular meeting." Jim said as he looked back toward the door they came in.

Connor looked at Jim with a great deal of curiosity.

"First off..." Jim began.  "Congratulations on you and Lydia." Jim cheekily smiled.

Connor was stunned.

"How do you know about Lydia and me?" Connor was beginning to turn red.

"I saw Lydia leaving your room last night, well... we did." Jim spoke coyly.

Connor wasn't quite sure how to react, he was nervously blushing while rubbing the back of his neck.  It took him a bit before realizing a key piece of information.

"Wait... we?" Connor searched Jim's face for an answer.

Jim nodded his head with a slight smile.  Connor's face brightened a little.

"You and Veronica?" Connor was tap-dancing around the obvious.

Jim again nodded his head.

"Congratulations to me? Nah, congratulations to you!" Connor had a rush of emotion.

"Congratulations to us." Jim corrected.

Connor and Jim both hugged and patted each other on the back.

"Does Lydia know what's going on?" asked Connor

"Veronica is telling her now, I'm sure." Jim responded.  "But that is only part of what the four of us need to talk about.

Connor looked at Jim seriously now, there was minor concern in his expression.

"Simon." Connor finally said.

"Yes." Jim took a moment.  "I still don't know how much I trust him.  He seems generally okay, but there's something about him still that seems, I don't know, hidden."

"You got that right!" confessed Connor.

"Anyway... now is not the time to discuss that.  We need to coordinate a meeting spot and time to figure out more about what's happening.  Until we have a more decisive feeling about Simon, we need to be cautious about what we say around him." Jim spoke earnestly.

"Where and when then?" Connor asked.

"I'm thinking we need to be strategic about this.  I'm thinking; We meet up in my room at night, after Simon goes to bed.  Last night, Veronica and I went out to explore a bit, just to get a better lay of the land without Simon hovering over us, and we ran into Simon who was apparently asleep on the main computer terminal.  He was sleep-talking or something.  He kept apologizing and asking forgiveness, saying it was his fault, or something, I don't know exactly." Jim looked down briefly, shaking his head.

"His fault? What was his fault?" Connor cut in.

"I don't know, but that's something we can discuss later." Jim answered.  Connor nodded.  "It seems as though Simon wanders around after hours as well, so; Our rooms are the only place we really have for privacy.  With Simon being in the center of everything, we'll have to focus on the outermost rooms to prevent and sound from leaking.  Discretion is key.  We'll start in my room, and rotate between my room and your room.  We'll just need some kind of signal or code-word to inform each other when a meeting needs to happen or take place.  Any ideas on that one?"

Connor stood puzzled for a moment.  He shrugged his shoulders.

"How about this?" Jim lifted his hand to his cheek.  "We'll use a hand signal."  Jim scratched his right jaw line three times.

"What would the signal be?" Connor asked

"You just saw it." Jim smiled cleverly.

Connor looked at Jim very confused.  Jim made a more obvious attempt to show him the signal.  Connor's eyes followed Jim's finger as he scratched his jawline again.  Connor understood.

"We'll have to make sure the girls know the signal as well.  You tell Lydia tonight, I'll tell Veronica."

Connor nodded his head in agreement.

"Now let's get out of here before Simon starts wondering what's taking us so long." Jim motioned his arm for Connor to follow him.

The two men walked toward the door.

"Just remember, act casual."

Connor nodded his head and opened the door.

They both walked back into the main area and Simon was sitting at the main computer terminal, Simon glanced back as the door closed behind them.

"Is everything okay in there?" Simon asked

"Yeah." Connor responded.  "Just making sure we were both better familiarized with the process of maintaining power.

"Excellent!" Simon smiled.

Lydia and Veronica both exited the Agriculture room and noticed Jim and Connor across the room.  Simon glanced over at the girls.

"Everything okay with the plants?" Simon asked.

"Yeah, I just wanted to ask Lydia what kind of solutions could be used to restore a plant's health in case of emergency."

"Oh, is there a problem with one of the crops?" Simon sounded mildly concerned.

"No, thankfully, just trying to anticipate problems before they happen." Lydia chimed in.

"Good thinking." Simon responded.  "I also have interesting news."

Everyone looked at each other, then to Simon.

"I'm thinking, tomorrow after breakfast, we should be able to test out the radiation suits.  The testing room is about half-way in the yellow and decreasing.  we're most likely safe to test them." Simon had a self-impressed and confident look in his eyes.  After having heard no objections, Simon spoke again.  "It's settled then.  In the meantime.  Who would like to explore the holo-deck with me?  I think we could all use a bit of entertainment.  How about it?"

Jim and everyone else was very intrigued by the thought.  He nodded his head.

"There are a plethora of different activities we could do in there, some more intense than others.  We could play a sport, we could engage in a paintball simulation, or we could all just relax on a nice beach and enjoy things.  The choice is completely yours.  The holo-deck can simulate nearly anything.  Let's meet upstairs in a half hour and we'll release some tension.  Have some fun."

With that being said, Simon left the main terminal and went upstairs to the holodeck floor.

Jim and Connor walked over to Veronica and Lydia.

"We're all gonna catch up on our conversations tonight." Jim looked at Lydia. "You with Connor." Jim looked at Veronica. "Then You and I."

"Sounds like a plan." Veronica smiled.

With most secrets out of the way, Jim took Veronica by the hand.  Lydia, seeing this, smiled.  Lydia looked at Connor who took her hand with a firm grip.  They all began to walk upstairs when the radiation number on the giant screen beeped.  Everyone looked over, and the radiation levels had dipped slightly.

"Not so sure that will be enough for Simon, huh?” Jim joked, candidly.

Everyone chuckled and scoffed. They climbed the rest of the way to the holo-deck level.  Jim pressed his finger on the door and it opened.  Jim waved everyone in.  Briefly glancing back at the big screen, Jim turned to face the door and followed Veronica inside.
