Shattered Pact

Tempest (2)

Tempest (2)

Jul 17, 2025

The forest canopy filtered the harsh midday sun into mottled pools of light and shadow as Auren and Kaele stepped deeper into the heart of the woods. Their boots sank slightly into the soft earth, dotted with patches of moss and fallen leaves, the scent of pine thick and sharp in the air.

Auren tilted his head, stealing a glance behind him. Kaele was still following, her footsteps sure but cautious. She hadn't said much since morning, her dark eyes sharp and focused. The birds chirped sporadically, and the rustling leaves whispered secrets as a light breeze stirred the branches overhead.

Without warning, Kaele broke the silence, her voice dripping with challenge, "Ready to finally see what a real fight looks like?"

Auren's lips twitched. He didn't know exactly what to make of it-was this a jab at his skill? An overconfident boast? Or just the usual banter she liked to throw around? Whatever it was, he braced himself.

"Bring it on," he replied, drawing his rapier with a practiced flick. The bronze blade caught a slant of sunlight, gleaming with quiet menace.

Kaele responded by flexing her fingers around the spear's shaft, the cold metal cool against her palm. "Don't say I didn't warn you."

They moved to a small clearing where the sunlight painted the ground gold. Auren flexed his fingers, feeling the weight of the rapier steady in his grip. Kaele adjusted her stance, spear poised like a coiled snake.

Then, without ceremony, she surged forward.

The spear arced in a deadly slash, aiming straight for Auren's shoulder. He parried deftly, the rapier ringing as it met the metal shaft, sparks practically flying in the dappled sunlight.

Kaele smirked and spun the spear with fluid grace, following up with a jab. Auren twisted, avoiding the sharp tip by mere inches, his heart pounding as adrenaline surged.

"Not bad," Auren said, breath coming a little fast. "But you'll have to do better than that."

Kaele's eyes glinted mischievously. "Oh, I intend to."

She lunged again, spear sweeping low this time. Auren dropped into a crouch, the tip passing over his head. He rolled forward, springing back to his feet with a grin.

"Okay, okay, you're fast," he admitted, wiping a bead of sweat from his brow.

Kaele narrowed her eyes. "Speed's nothing without precision."

She jabbed, Auren blocked, then countered with a quick upward thrust. Kaele twisted away, the rapier sliding past the edge of her spear but missing flesh by a hair.

"Ha! Almost got you," Auren teased, the thrill of the fight lighting his eyes.

Kaele's response was a low laugh, rare and genuine. "Keep dreaming."

Their dance continued, rhythm picking up. Spear met blade with bursts of metallic clatter. Leaves kicked up around them as they dodged, struck, and parried. Auren marveled at Kaele's determination, her fierce intensity matching his own hunger to improve.

At one point, Kaele made a wide arc with her spear, forcing Auren to backpedal. But he saw an opening-a slight overextension in her wrist.

Seizing the moment, he feinted left, then jabbed upward.

Kaele barely had time to adjust, the rapier tip sliding a fraction away from her cheek. She caught herself just in time, eyes wide but sparkling with respect.

"Okay, that was close," she breathed.

Auren smiled, lowering his blade. "I'm not done yet."

They paused, chest heaving, smiles tugging at their lips despite the sweat and dirt.

Kaele shook her head, mock-scolding. "You're lucky I'm letting you live today."

Auren laughed, a short bark of joy. "Don't get used to it."

The moment broke when a sharp rustle sounded nearby. Both froze, weapons raised.

Out of the underbrush hopped a small squirrel, eyes wide and tail twitching, clearly more startled by the human antics than any real threat.

Kaele chuckled, lowering her spear. "Even the forest thinks you're a bit dramatic."

Auren rolled his eyes but grinned. "Hey, practice makes perfect."

They settled onto the mossy ground, the tension melting as they caught their breath.

"You're not half bad," Auren admitted, tossing a stray leaf aside.

Kaele nudged him with her elbow. "I could say the same."

The sun dipped lower, casting a warm glow as they rested, the sounds of the forest filling the spaces between words.

For a moment, the world was just two warriors and the quiet, a fragile truce of sweat, laughter, and sharpened steel.

The sun was dipping low behind the thick trees as Auren and Kaele left the clearing where their sparring had ended in a tie-neither victorious, both exhilarated. The glow of twilight filtered through the forest canopy in dappled waves, turning the moss and leaves into pools of gold and shadow.

Kaele stretched, rolling her neck with a smirk. "Not bad for a swordsman who's never fought a real opponent."

Auren rolled his eyes but smiled. "Maybe next time you won't keep underestimating me."

She laughed softly, the sound clear and sharp in the quiet woods. "We'll see."

The air was cooler now, the chirping of birds replaced by the soft rustling of leaves stirred by a gentle breeze. The forest seemed to shift as shadows grew longer, the trees closing in like ancient sentinels watching their passage.

They walked in silence for a while, the fatigue from their duel slowly ebbing away beneath the steady rhythm of their steps. The underbrush crunched softly beneath their boots, and the scent of pine and damp earth filled the air.

Auren glanced back again-Kaele's figure sturdy and confident in the waning light. He almost laughed to himself. Still worried I'm going to trip over my own feet? But he kept the thought to himself.

Ahead, the forest thinned abruptly, revealing a narrow dirt road winding south. Along the edge of this path, partially hidden in the growing gloom, stood a solitary building.

It looked out of place-like a patch of black stitched into the vibrant greens and browns around it.

"A tavern?" Kaele's voice was sharp, curiosity piqued. "Out here?"

Auren's hand instinctively went to the hilt of his rapier, fingers tightening on the worn leather. "Seems like it."

They approached cautiously. The tavern's wooden sign swung on rusty chains above the door, creaking softly in the breeze. The paint was faded, and the windows were clouded with grime, giving the place a forgotten, almost haunted look.

No laughter spilled from within. No smoke curled from a chimney. No lanterns flickered behind the heavy, worn door.

Just silence.

The pair exchanged a glance but stepped inside, the floor creaking beneath their boots.

The room was dim and stale, filled with the smell of dust, old wood, and something faintly sour. The few tables scattered about were empty, the chairs askew as if abandoned in a hurry.

At the far end, a single figure stood behind the bar-a pale man with tangled blond hair that fell messily over his tired eyes.

He was cleaning a rough wooden table, his movements slow and deliberate, almost bored.

In the world of Lumeris, magic drifts like dust in sunlight, unseen by most.
But for some, there comes a day when their eyes open to it—a shimmering glow that hangs in the air. The Aether.
When that day comes, it means they’ve been chosen.
Chosen to perform the Pact.
The Pact is an ancient ritual where the chosen surrender themselves to magic—and in return, the Aether grants them a single gift: an Affinity.
There are Ten Affinities, each one a piece of the world’s balance:
Fire
Ice
Shadow
Healing
Illusion
Metal
Wind
Stone
Plants
Lightning
Each Affinity grants power, but each exacts a cost. Fire burns its wielder as easily as it does enemies. Shadow users feel darkness creeping into their thoughts. The Arcanum, keepers of magical law, teach that the Ten are enough. That the Ten are safe.
And so, the Pact is the great dividing line.
Before it, you are ordinary.
After it, your life is no longer your own.
