As the atroximal threat became more of an ever-present danger, traveling away from an area with established defenses became one of great risk. All of the businesses that depended on the daily flow of vacationers, commuters, and transporters eventually dried up. If the lack of visitors didn't close up shop, surprise raids from mutants and opportunistic looters did.
