For another dog story, a dog of ours actually did jump into a pond thinking the plants would be solid ground. There was a floating plastic toy fish that he couldn't reach, and he was clearing intending to hop on the patch of water plants and grab it from there. Predictably, the island he sought proved to be a mirage, and he ended up a bit bedraggled and very embarrassed.
We did fish out the toy for him in the end.
