I felt my classmates' gazes upon me as I sat in the auditorium, idly brushing my hair back with my hand. I'm sure some were expecting myself and the other devils to storm the stage once more, but that wasn't in the cards for me at least. I wouldn't have been at all surprised if Caeda leapt up there to utter some inane nonsense.
Apparently at Rising Shards, major announcements that changed the dynamics of the school entirely were common. It made me feel like my arrival was a bit less special when I found out that it was the thirteenth of seventeen major announcements just in that month, but for the classes I was a part of at least we were still the primary focus of gossip. I was torn between enjoying the spotlight and despising it, deciding that if I could possibly turn this attention into more eyes for my band it'd be alright.
When Penteldtam was in charge, the announcements would be nonstop, seemingly just to make him feel like he was actually competent. Some announcements didn't live up to the school dynamic shifting reputation, they were just nothing events like announcing a new coffee machine or showing off Penteldtam's custom trading card set featuring the school staff that immediately landed him in legal trouble when a retired teacher threatened to sue for use of their likeness.
With Kitty and Caya in charge this would surely be different. At least, that was my assumption. Kitty took the stage by herself to start, lazily tapped her microphone, sighing loudly into it before sitting at the edge of the stage. She waved for Ms. Corinani to join her and give her a backrub.
"I just gotta say, I can't be in two places at once," Kitty said, a rousing start to her speech, just jumping with no formal introduction or anything. "And I'm gonna be honest, this building, let's be real, sucks completely. But I think I like it better than the other one? I'm so sick of that old-ass building!"
"But it's a state of the art building, isn't it?" Corinani said.
"Shut it, moron, we're bringing the high tech techie junk here! Idiot!" Kitty scared her away by smacking the mic on the ground, making a horrible sound. "Get off my stage!"
She continued once she was sure Corinani was back in her seat.
"Darning damn hell darn it, I spoiled the thing, didn't I? Pretend you didn't hear that," Kitty said.
I don't think anyone really understood what she meant, so nothing had been spoiled yet.
"Why would we be moving the high tech stuff here, you ask?" Kitty asked. "You ask? You ask? You ask?" She repeated until a group of students asked her about the tech in a bored tone.
"We're moving it here because...I made a weawy gweat pitch to the school board that they accepted, yay! Everyone, cheer for Kitty!"
She got some slight applause.
"Thank you! I am all about game changing. Flipping the board, if you will. And what will Kitty do to do...so?" Kitty asked. "Falling Shards boys, stand up!"
It didn't even occur to me that the Falling Shards side of the school was there. The mostly boys' school stood up reluctantly.
"Kay, now Wildfire Hearts! All of yous give Kitty the ol' stand at attention." Kitty said.
We obeyed, the visiting Wildfire Hearts students standing up.
"Everyone on the Falling Shards side, switch with the Wildfire Hearts ones!" Kitty said.
We weren't sure she actually wanted us to move until she started singing a song of hers that had "get a move on" repeating a bunch in the lyrics.
Once we swapped places, Kitty clapped for us.
"That's it! That's my big and super nifty idea to fix all our problems! That ratty old school? That's yours now, boys. And the rest of Wildfire Hearts will come over here. So I don't have to deal with two freaking schools anymore, honk!"
The auditorium lit up in chatter. Another move of schools? So this was permanent? What would they call this school then if Wildfire Hearts was part of Rising Shards? How would this work at all if so much of Wildfire Hearts was based off of Endoran practices that clashed with Rising Shards?
"I know you have lots of questions, but I don't really care," Kitty said. "I'll have to sing my entire album Moving (the) Hell On DX if you start freaking out about this, though. Do you want to hear—"
A serious looking man approached, cutting Kitty off as he took the stage.
"Oh great, it's this aaaa—I mean, hello, Mr. Benta IV!" Kitty said. She handed Mr. Benta IV the microphone. Berin Kilander and Elixus Soleri, the vice principal and principal for Falling Shards also joined him. Soleri looked smug, and Berin looked like he had to explain a joke that bombed.
"Ugh, I'm not in the mood for announcements, but I'm the only person with authority on the school board with a working vehicle right now, so you're stuck with me." Benta said. He sighed mournfully. "I know, why don't they just get a cab? How could the entire school board not have a working car? No busses? But apparently that's the case. I don't even want to be here, I'm so depressed."
"Are you depressed about the move, sir?" Berin asked.
"No, I could give half a rat's butt about these confusing schools, and their pointless bickering, separating, rejoining, what have you," Benta IV said. "I'm miserable because Peachy Peachy is graduating, I might actually do it this time."
"...do what, sir?" Berin asked.
"You know." Benta squinted.
Berin laughed nervously, attempting to take Benta's mic but giving up and settling for his own. "Um, maybe we shouldn't talk like this on stage? Er, if anyone needs it know we're always there to help, and..."
"I meant firing every Kilander, but sure, make it all depressing," Benta IV said.
"Right, always...fun sense of humor," Berin said. "Is there anything you want to add, or?"
"No, that's it," Benta said.
"You visited the school just to say that? Nothing else about the Falling Shards or Wildfire Hearts moves?" Berin asked.
"I'm sure you'll get to the rest soon enough, let a man grieve in peace! Buttmunch."
The crowd gasped, but not because of anything they were saying. Penteldtam had wandered in from the back of the stage, stepping out of the shadows with a haunted expression on his face. The others seemed to be expecting him, though.
"Penty, buddy? You wanna say your lines?" Berin asked.
Penteldtam just stared forward blankly.
"Alright, maybe we'll just move on," Berin said.
"Why'd we even let him talk anyways?" Kitty asked. "Not like he's getting hired at New Falling Shards."
"Well, I'll be a major part of the hiring process there, so he may very well be looking at a new position!" Berin said.
"That's what I think it should be called, 'New Falling Shards.' It's pretty clever, right?" Kitty said.
"Right, anyways, maybe we should wrap this up," Berin said.
Kitty gasped. "I didn't even get to sing yet!"
"All the more reason to wrap this up," Berin muttered.
"Hey Berin, you know the saying that's the way the cookie mumbles? Because that's what you're doing right now! Mumbling. Tsk tsk." Kitty said. "Anyways, yeah, Falling Shards bye bye, Wildfire Hearts over here. Woo!"
A confused air hung over the students as we departed. It didn't make much of a difference to me. I didn't plan on communicating with any of the boys from Falling Shards, so them leaving meant nothing to me. Most of my acquaintances from Wildfire Hearts already made the move. Maybe we could get more space in the dorms, but that wouldn't matter much to me, as I was in the devils' facility in the third dorm on campus.
I had a lot of questions about the logistics and how the move would occur, but overall it didn't matter much to me. Everyone's chatter about it was immediately annoying, making it a relief a few days later when Mother summoned me with a request.
