Some weeks had passed since the arrival of Kaia. The daily rhythm of the temple felt more stable as the faces grew more familiar. Kaia and Ophelia worked separately most days, exchanging few words at night. The awkwardness weighed on both sides and they were not too sure how to break the ice.
Katalya’s health had improved slightly. Most likely because Kaia volunteered to work in the infirmary, so that they would see each other without being suspicious. Ophelia also visited often. Katalya insisted on seeing them both, hoping that if they couldn’t talk as roommates, perhaps they’d remember how to, as friends. He had already decided on the groups. One of them being Ophelia, Garnia and Kaia.
As he was presenting this information, he walked slowly towards Ophelia…
“I know work will be harder on you Ophelia… since I put you in the group with the newest members” he said with a soft look, “But I believe in you! You will help them adapt faster than anyone. And I will be here to help you if needed.”
Ophelia smiled lightly and nodded “ Thank you for your trust. Kaia, Garnia and I will work hard to not disappoint you.”
Gael's words were warm. His smile was soft. Yet Ophelia remained as polite as ever. Not getting closer than needed be.
As for Kaia… she didn't like how Gael spoke, as if they were already a burden. Still, it's not enough to judge a man she just met. Time would tell soon enough.
“When Gael left the hall, Garnia elbowed Ophelia with a grin.
‘You could do worse,’ she whispered.
Ophelia gave a quiet smile, though her eyes stayed on the door long after Gael had gone.
Kaia said nothing, but a slight tension in her jaw betrayed her…
