The courtyard was frozen in that breath between silence and annihilation.
Seraphel’s wings—one white, one black—unfurled fully, stretching wider than the cathedral archway behind her. Feathers drifted down like falling stars, each one humming with null energy. The ground rippled under her bare feet, cobblestone quietly crumbling as mana was devoured from the air.
Ryu shifted Eira gently, helping her regain her balance; her trembling fingers clutched at his sleeve before she could stop herself.
“Eira,” he said softly, steadying her. “You’re alright.”
She nodded a little too fast. “Y-Yes… I’m fine. I just—”
But her eyes flicked, quickly, instinctively, toward Seraphel’s scythe.
And Ryu noticed.
Not suspicion.
Not accusation.
Just concern, flickering for a fraction of a moment.
That tiny warmth made Eira’s stomach twist.
Not now.
Not when she already knew what she had to do.
Not when the one person she was about to hurt was the one person who didn’t deserve it.
Seraphel watched them with divine detachment.
“Prepare yourselves,” she whispered.
The courtyard dimmed.
Mana thinned.
Yoru reacted first.
“Ryu,” she said sharply, “move—!”
The scythe vanished.
Not swung.
Not lifted.
Not teleported.
It ceased to exist in one place and reappeared in another, the space between erased.
Ryu pushed Eira back just as Lifeless Edge carved through the air where he had been standing.
A thin white line—absence itself—hung behind the blade like a scar on reality.
Cael shouted, “R-Ryu—!!”
Ryu didn’t answer. He was already moving.
He flicked his wrist—three symbols ignited midair, spiraling into a barrier of compressed sorcery.
Seraphel tapped it gently with the tip of her scythe.
It evaporated.
Not shattered.
Not broken.
Gone.
Yoru flashed in front of Ryu, her spirit-light blazing. “Ryu, left!”
He twisted and parried the second swing with a reinforced mana-bind on his arm; the impact tremored through the courtyard—
But unlike before, Seraphel didn’t stop.
She chained her movements.
Null Strike—Null Ripple—Silent Step—Scythe Arc—Wing Cut—Null Bloom—
All in less than a heartbeat.
Cael’s breath vanished. “She’s too fast! Dude, she’s—she’s actually too fast—!!”
Yoru grabbed Cael’s cloak collar and hurled him back.
“DON’T get in Ryu’s range!” she snapped. “Seraphel is targeting him specifically—she’ll erase anything in the way!”
Cael stumbled, teeth clenched. “Then I can’t just WATCH! Let me—”
He never finished the sentence.
Because Eira moved.
A single step.
Barely noticeable.
But Ryu felt it instantly.
He turned—
“Eira—?”
She raised her hand.
Her mana flared, bright and quick and sharp.
And she whispered:
“Bind.”
Ryu didn’t even have time to widen his eyes.
The spell struck his chest—
—a golden chain of radiant sigils snapping into existence, wrapping around his arms and torso, forcing his feet into the stone.
“Eira—!!” Cael shouted.
Yoru’s eyes flew wide. “WHAT ARE YOU—?!”
The chain wasn’t ordinary magic.
It was ancient. Forbidden.
A sealing technique from the Southern Dominion.
Ryu gritted his teeth, muscles flexing violently.
The chain held.
For two seconds.
Only two.
But against someone like Seraphel—
—that was enough to kill a god.
Yoru shot forward, hands blazing, trying to break the spell, her voice cracking. “Eira, STOP! STOP—!!!”
But Eira didn’t meet her eyes.
She couldn’t.
She stared at the ground, breathing ragged, shoulders trembling—not in hatred, not in calculation…
…but in unbearable guilt.
“I’m sorry…” she whispered.
“I’m so, so sorry.”
Cael froze in horror.
Yoru’s face twisted with betrayal deeper than rage.
Ryu’s voice cut through the chaos, calm even as the chain burned into his skin.
“Cael—Yoru—defend.”
Seraphel moved.
She stepped toward him—
—and the ground died under her feet.
Lifeless Edge curved toward Ryu’s immobilized throat.
“NO—!!” Yoru screamed.
Her aura exploded, spirit-light flaring to blinding intensity. Her palms slammed together, forming a prism of condensed ancestral mana.
A shield born from the oldest pacts.
Seraphel’s scythe touched it.
The shield vanished.
Simply erased.
Yoru staggered, breath punched out of her chest.
Cael threw himself between Ryu and the scythe, scales sparking along his arms as his dragon blood surged. “LIKE HELL I’LL JUST LET YOU—!!!”
Seraphel didn’t even swing at him.
She flicked her wing.
The black feathers sliced through the air—
Cael crossed his arms to block—
The feathers passed through him.
His legs buckled.
Not cut.
Not bleeding.
But his mana—half of it—
gone.
Drained like water poured onto desert sand.
He collapsed to one knee, gasping. “I—I can’t—my mana—!!”
Yoru dragged him back instantly, pulling him out of range. “Don’t get close! Don’t EVER get close!”
Ryu strained against the radiant bind, muscles coiling, veins igniting with raw mana—
“One second…” he hissed through his teeth.
Seraphel’s scythe descended.
Yoru threw every ounce of her power into a barrier—
her spirit form flickering dangerously, cracks of light spreading across her arms.
“RYU!!!” she cried.
The scythe touched the barrier—
——and then the chain broke.
Ryu tore free in a burst of explosive blue mana, grabbing Yoru by the waist and spinning them out of the scythe’s path. The blade sliced through the air where his neck had been—
—a hair’s breadth off.
The courtyard detonated behind them, stone vaporizing.
Ryu landed low, sliding across broken ground, Yoru clinging to his back, panting hard.
“Ryu—” she gasped, “you’re bleeding—”
“It’s nothing.”
His eyes hardened.
“Seraphel’s focus is me. Don’t let her isolate you.”
Eira stood frozen in place.
Not running.
Not attacking again.
Not even defending Seraphel.
Just… shaking.
Ryu finally turned his head toward her.
Not angry.
Not betrayed.
Just unbearably sad.
“Why?” he asked quietly.
Eira’s throat closed.
Her knees buckled.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, voice breaking. “I hate this. I hate this. I didn’t want to—Ryu, I didn’t—”
Seraphel’s voice cut through her words like winter wind.
“You waste time.”
Eira flinched.
Ryu rose to his full height, Yoru floating beside him, her light brightening.
Seraphel lifted Lifeless Edge.
“Your fate was written long before this moment,” she said to Ryu. “All things converge to you.”
Yoru snarled. “You won’t touch him.”
Cael staggered to his feet behind them, wiping blood from his lip. “Ryu—Yoru—let me fight—”
Ryu didn’t look back.
“Cael.”
His tone was command, heavy and absolute.
“Stay far.”
Cael froze. “B-But—!!”
“If you come close,” Yoru said sharply, “you’ll die. And we can’t cover you. Not against her.”
Seraphel’s eyes drifted—
not to Cael, not to Yoru.
Only to Ryu.
As if the others didn’t matter.
As if the entire world had narrowed to a single inevitable target.
Ryu stepped forward, cracking his knuckles, mana swirling around him like a rising storm.
“Yoru.”
Her eyes glowed a deeper azure.
“Yes.”
“Eighty percent.”
Wind exploded outward as Yoru’s form expanded—her spirit-light intensifying, runes spiraling up her arms, her voice deepening into an echo of ancient origin.
She clasped her hands together, channeling raw ancestral power into Ryu’s core.
Ryu inhaled.
The air trembled.
Blue sigils ignited across his body—
shoulders, spine, chest, arms—
each one pulsing like a heartbeat.
His aura erupted—
— a violent, roaring wave of mana that cracked the cathedral windows and sent dust raining from rooftops.
Cael shielded his face, shouting, “HOLY—Ryu, you’re—!!”
Ninety percent.
Ryu’s hair lifted in the wind, his eyes burning with sapphire flame, his voice lower, older, echoing with the weight of centuries.
“Seraphel.”
She raised Lifeless Edge.
“Ryu Aetherion.”
The world stilled.
And then—
—in a single instant—
they collided.
