"He's not a ghost. He's my brother, Marina."
Axion's voice sliced through the chaos, his gaze fixed on his brother, who thrashed violently within a fiery cocoon. The swirling flames danced like living creatures, crackling with a fury that echoed the turmoil within.
A nagging thought lingered in Axion's mind: why had Marina believed his brother was a ghost? He had warned her never to venture here. This place, sealed tight, was guarded fiercely by the royal family of pyromancers—the only ones capable of breaching its infernal walls.
"The crown prince?!" Marina exclaimed, her surprise palpable. It had never crossed her mind that the boy she had seen was the crown prince, trapped in his eternal slumber. For five long years, he had slept, but now his powers erupted like a volcano, consuming everything in their path.
Her heart raced as flames licked the stone walls. She had heard the stories, whispered legends of a prince lost to darkness, but witnessing his turmoil firsthand was a terror beyond imagination. She nearly smacked her forehead for her foolishness in thinking he was merely a ghost.
Just then, the elder pyromancer, straining to contain the tempest of flames raging around them, collapsed, his strength finally giving out.
Axion rushed to his brother's side, who was engulfed in a swirling vortex of fire, his body thrashing as if battling unseen demons in his dreams. The flames crackled dangerously, their heat threatening to consume everything in their path. Summoning his own powers, Axion began to absorb the searing flames, the effort causing blood to trickle from his mouth, painting the ground in dark red.
Marina's eyes widened in fear and concern. Without a moment's hesitation, she entered the room, her knight shadowing her with a tense expression.
As she moved closer to Axion, desperate to help, the other pyromancers called out in alarm.
"Princess go back it's dangerous here!"
"What is the princess trying to do?!"
"Your highness?!" they exclaimed, eyes darting between the chaos and Marina's determined form.
"Marina!" Axion's voice was laced with dread, his heart racing at the thought of her getting hurt.
"Get back!" He shouted, memories of his mother's death surging back with haunting clarity—a casualty of his brother's uncontrollable power. "You'll be hurt! Water won't help him! It's unstoppable!"
"Your Highness, stop!" her knight bellowed, desperation lacing his voice.
Despite their plea, she stubbornly summoned her elemental power and felt the cool, soothing waters of her heritage flow through her veins. She reached out, her magic intertwining with the chaotic flames, creating a dance of opposing forces.
The fire hissed and sputtered, momentarily faltering, but the prince's power flared in response, a bright pulse that nearly knocked her off her feet.
Only an elemental user of considerable power, one who bore the mark of royal blood, could summon the elements themselves, transcending mere control to wield them as a master would a loyal servant.
"Stay calm, I can help!" she called, her voice steady despite the chaos. As she concentrated, shimmering waves of water surged from her palms, striking the flames and absorbing their heat. In that moment, the room exploded with a blinding light. The elemental forces clashed, a storm of fire and water swirling together in a breathtaking display.
But just as hope sparked in her heart, a dark shadow emerged from the flames—a creature of pure malice. Its eyes glowed ominously, flickering like dying embers, and it lunged toward them, intent on wreaking havoc.
"Protect the princess!" Axion shouted, stepping in front of Marina, but she refused to stand down.
"What is that thing?!" she exclaimed.
As the creature lunged, Marina conjured a shimmering barrier of water, its surface alive with magic. It collided with the shadowy form, causing steam to erupt around them, mutilating the creature's form.
She then redirected her water magic into a spear, launching it straight at the creature. The water sizzled as it met the flames, hissing loudly. The creature recoiled, but it was relentless, charging again with renewed fury. Axion unleashed a burst of fire, but the creature twisted through the flames, undeterred.
"We need to combine our powers!" Marina yelled, urgency driving her words. "We can contain it!"
Axion nodded, determination igniting in his eyes. They moved in sync—Marina summoned a swirling vortex of water, while Axion called forth a wall of flame, creating a barrier that trapped the creature between the two elements.
The air shimmered as fire and water collided, creating steam that enveloped the beast. It roared again, trying to break free, but they pressed harder. Marina focused, feeling the ebb and flow of her magic, while Axion drew on the depths of his power.
"Now!" they shouted in unison, unleashing their magic together. The steam exploded outward in a brilliant flash of light, enveloping the creature. It howled in frustration as the elements clashed violently, sparks flying in all directions.
In that moment, the ground shook, and the air was charged with energy. Axion unleashed a powerful wave of fire, weaving it with Marina's water, creating a vortex of elemental fury. The creature, caught in the vortex of their combined magic, began to falter. It twisted and writhed, trying to escape, but the elements held it fast.
With a final surge of will, they intensified their magic, pushing against the creature's resistance. The room filled with a blinding light, and for a heartbeat, time seemed to freeze. Then, in a spectacular explosion of steam and fire, the creature imploded, vanishing into nothingness. Gasping for breath, they stood amidst the swirling mist, hearts pounding.
Marina turned her attention to the crown prince, the chaotic flames still raging around him. She felt the remnants of his power, sensing the turmoil within him. Without hesitation, she stepped forward, her barefoot nearly touching the blaze.
"Your highness! You'll get hurt!" her knight's voice was sharp with urgency, and he gripped her wrist tightly.
"Go back, Marina," Axion said, stepping forward, his eyes fierce.
"I think I can help him," she insisted, gazing at the vortex of fire swirling around the sleeping prince.
"Please stop, your highness. You've already helped, and that is enough, "her knight pleaded, worry etched in his expression.
"No, I can help him more. My power can counter his flames."
"I also don't agree, Marina. What you did is enough," Axion added, concern deepening his tone.
"Are you really going to stop me too?" Marina challenged Axion, her eyes fierce. "What if my power is exactly what he needs?"
Axion fell silent, uncertainty creeping into his expression. For years, he and his team had sought a cure, ways to wake his brother. They had tried everything, but all had been in vain. Yet, with Marina's power—power she had claimed could work—a flicker of hope ignited within him.
In that moment, Marina summoned her power, icy tendrils creeping across the stone floor. With a swift motion, she froze the onlookers' knees and toes in shimmering ice, leaving them rooted and bewildered. Gasps filled the air, but her resolve remained unwavering as she stepped forward, unimpeded by the barriers she had created.
"I have to do this," she declared, urgency driving her toward the crown prince.
"Marina!" Axion called again, desperation rising in his tone.
"Get away from him!" her knight shouted, stepping forward with a fierce look in his eyes. "You don't know what you're doing!"
Marina met his gaze, unwavering. "I'm sorry Caelan, but I have to do this. Let me help!"
"His flames are out of control! You'll be burned alive!" her knight insisted.
Ignoring all of them, she pressed closer. "I won't get burned by you," she whispered softly, her hands hovering over him. The heat radiating from the prince was intense, but she drew on her magic, infusing her energy into him. A gentle stream of cold power wrapped around his sleeping form.
"You're risking everything!" her knight exclaimed, panic threading through his voice as he struggled against the ice encasing his knees and feet. Desperation etched on his face, he fought to free himself. "Please, step back before it's too late!"
"I'll help you," she declared fiercely, determination blazing in her eyes. As her magic flowed, the prince's brow furrowed in his sleep, a flicker of awareness stirring within him. His fiery aura began to stabilize, the overwhelming rage giving way to a soothing warmth.
In this moment, the pyromancers, including Axion, had melted the ice that had bound their feet, allowing them to close the distance.
Axion watched in awe, his heart swelling with hope. "Marina? How in the world...?" he gasped, bewilderment etched across his face. The air in the room crackled with an energy unlike anything they had ever felt; her icy power radiated a chilling calm, distinctly different from the usual warmth of hydromancers.
As they watched, astonished, the water that had once filled the chamber transformed into solid ice, glimmering in the dim light. It was as if the very essence of the room had shifted, the cool, soothing frost enveloping the flames, extinguishing their fury in a breathtaking display of elemental mastery.
With every ounce of her will, she poured her strength into the crown prince, determined to heal the wounds that had festered for years. The chamber glowed with a soft light, a balance of fire and water that held the promise of renewal.
"Your Highness! Stop—" her knight urged, finally free and poised to intervene. Anxiety flickered in his eyes as he feared her power are now exposed. But Axion swiftly grasped the knight's arm, a fierce glare pinning him in place.
"I'm okay." Marina reassured, her voice steady despite the turmoil surrounding them. With a resigned sigh, the knight bowed his head, acknowledging her resolve even as worry etched lines on his face.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the prince's eyes fluttered open, revealing the depths of his spirit. Confusion washed over him, but as he focused on Marina, a sense of calm enveloped the room.
"You...?" he murmured, his voice hoarse, the remnants of fire fading from his gaze.
Marina smiled, relief flooding through her. But before she could say anything, a wave of exhaustion crashed over her, and she suddenly collapsed to the ground.
